Yeah I guess I can see that. But this really needs to happen now. Not in February.

I almost think we need Wheeler to have some bad games coming up to force this, as opposed to him playing well and causing Cal to overthink this.
I’ll never hope he or the team plays bad to get it going, he just needs to play the correct lineups and let both of them succeed and help us win. Also play Thiero instead of 3 bigs at once.

We don't though. He is already playing pg when Wheeler is out, which is getting him experience. We just need to slowly expand that time per game he is taking the lead guard role. No need to rush it and cause problems.

We certainly don't need Wheeler to have bad games. We need him to continue to improve and have good games, particularly shooting wise.

He is currently shooting 33% from 3 on 18 attempts, or an avg of 3 attempts per game. That's not exactly awful. If he could maintain that range or improve at all, teams have to start respecting that a bit more and playing him more defensively. That certainly would open the floor a bit, and I really like Wheeler to be able to break down his man off the dribble more than anyone on the team.
I don't mind Wheeler taking an open 3 every now and then, about as often as Oscar I'd say. What drives me crazy is when he drives into a crowded lane, clogging it up even more, with no idea what to do once he gets there. He shoots a little jumper and gets stuffed. He can't lob it up for Oscar because Oscar really doesn't jump high from a standing base. All our other bigs are drifting around thec3 point line. It's basically a turnover unless it's a layup for Wheeler.

If we had a coach, he would teach our shooters to start heading for an open spot on the 3 point line and to be ready, then have Wheeler pitch it out to the for the 3. This is something that rarely happens in a Cal offense. Inside out is one of the basic plays in the sport.

But Wheeler might not get benched until he struggles. Cal very well could roll with him until that happens.

So you want to place your all eggs in the six game basket of THIS season...damn Lead Belly, maybe you really are a retard and don't just play one in your socks. [laughing]

Reeves and Frederick are your shooters - only you and Cal would disagree with that.

Wheeler's percentage is based on wide open looks, those are dropping like a rock as teams are extending in this putrid thing Cal calls an offense.

Never said Reeves was a PG, but he has more skills to get to the rack one-on-one than anyone on this team - to say otherwise just magnifies your illiteracy.

You take stump? [roll]
Lol, what?

They're 2 of our shooters. We appear to have some others as well. Pretty sure Wallace shoots it quite well, too! But where did I or Cal disagree with Frederick and Reeves being our shooters?

Don't you want Wheeler taking and making his open 3's? Why would you want him taking contested ones?

It doesn't though. Being a good scorer/shooter doesn't mean you are a great ball handler. 65% of his shots have been from 3. So someone might want to tell him about the amazing ability to breakdown defenders and score at the rim. Evidently he is unaware of it.

You're trying, bud. I'll give you that! 😉

Wheeler stopping jacking triples and sticking to distribution equates to an upward trajectory.

SW is a liability in Cal's man philosophy, any coach worth their salt just runs motion until they get their desired match up...and with the floor spread defensively, it's over...Wallace the exact opposite, quite possibly the best defender on the team...
He barely takes any 3’s. And I don’t mind when he does occasionally. He is going to hit his fair share. He hardly “jacks triples” like you claim.

I agree with part of your first paragraph. I do think Wheeler should probably have more of a green light than Oscar, but he only needs to take open 3's.

I also agree he tend to get himself to deep in the paint without a plan. And I do think we should run the lob more, particularly for Collins, Toppin, Ware and even Livingston and Wallace. That used to be a staple of our offense and we hardly run it anymore.

We have to allow Toppin and Livingston to play some of the perimeter because of how offense has evolved in recent years. Both of them are capable shooters, even though they haven't put up numbers to prove it so far this season. However, if they can get going from there, we will get really dangerous as a team.

We need players that aren't hesitant to let it fly though. Frederick is bad about passing up shots.

You aren't very familiar with basketball, are you?

What does Reeves and Frederick shooting 40% (FYI, Frederick is slightly above Wheeler at this point % wise) matter? Do they all have to shoot the same?

How does Wheeler playing prevent Oscar from shooting 3's?

Why would we tell Toppin not to shoot good 3 pt shots?

Probably because Collins has shown the ability to hit them when he is on, and doing so would open the floor up more for other players. Would you oppose he tell Collins to shrink the floor? I'm sure you'll say something stupid or create a poorly made meme to suggest Cal shouldn't play Collins, but again, that will only further demonstrate your ignorance of basketball.

Well, considering Reeves isn't a pg, doesn't have the greatest handles or the speed Wheeler has, then yes, I would prefer Wheeler. Particularly considering Wheeler is a very good assist man. Also, considering you can put Reeves on the floor at the same time, I'm not sure why you conclude it's an either or with them. 🤔

You may be the Benny type we hear so much about. 😉
Except Collins hasn’t done jack **** in any game so far this season. He’s literally a net 0 at best. Most likely a negative. Still, Cal finds him about 20 MPG. It’s absurd.

He probably will until around December like usual unless we just can’t win an actual decent game and then he will change because they pressure will be thru the roof.

Big hit to the “Wheeler is great, 10 assists a game!” crowd. 😬
If you can’t see that Wheeler is the best at getting guys good looks for open shots, don’t know what to tell you. Well, I could tell you get your glasses checked I guess.

You not only elevated Wheeler to PG but, your break down boy as you put it...then you have Collins on the perimeter instead of playing above the rim, a forte I thought only Ray Charles could have missed... [roll]

Yeah for real, he needs to be parked on the bench. It may be because he lost his dad. I’m sure that’s hard and he may not get past that this year or any year. But especially now it’s a factor. Right now though he’s not contributing and him running around the perimeter and clogging the lane is doing us no good. We aren’t even trying to run lobs for him like we did in the Bahamas when he looked good, he took it strong to the hoop, looked very comfortable shooting. It hasn’t happened in the real games though. Maybe he’s just a phenomenal talent who never puts it together in games and looks all world in practice settings. We have had a few guys like that over the years.

He looked really good in the Bahamas though, which makes me think he could be in a rutt. Particularly with his dad stuff. I think you have to give him some of the benefit of the doubt and try to let him play through some of it. Especially in the easier portion of the schedule. If anything, it at least gives Collins a few minutes to get his dad dying off his mind. If it continues, then yea, you have to cut those minutes.

He will Jack up 10-12 when we lose in March and have at least 6 critical turnovers to go with it.
Just wait and see.
Cal loses the same way every year.
A good coach will lag 10 ft off wheeler and Cal and Wheeler both will fall for it.

And this isn’t meant to blame wheeler. It will be Cal’s fault for allowing it to happen.

Bummer, I was really looking forward to those Wheeler/Ware/Collins lineups. Watching a terrified Collins raise up from 18' with 20 seconds on the shot clock, like Brooks did all last year, is as efficient as it gets.

I also love, love, love the way Wheeler tosses a hook-shot type lob, to a heavily guarded Ware, with the game on the line. Watching that ball glance off the top of the backboard is just how it's drawn up. Love it.

Yep. He’ll try to play hero ball and take it to the basket when there’s nothing there. That or he’ll go baseline and have nowhere to go. That drives me nuts.

Let him play in the Bellarmine type games but try getting him involved to get something going. He’s just been hovering around not doing anything. In real games though he should be limited and definitely not in the game with Ware and another forward.

Yeah when he tried forcing it into Oscar(I believe) heck it could have been Ware he played so much(lol) and threw it OB it killed me. No idea with all the swinging we do left and right that nobody can get a wing angle bounce pass to Oscar after he seals off his man on the block. IU did that about 6 times last night with TJD and it was beautiful and that bounce pass certainly won’t go in the crowd.

Maybe he said it maybe not; but I'll wait to see if he actually does it.

What more would he need to see? How much more comfortable does he want Wallace to get? If he really thinks this, I see no value in waiting.

Same exact scenario as last season, yet we withered away when it was obvious tyty should've been on point.

Wheeler is a unique talent but he can't be the guy in most situations and it's compounded by the fact we have the player of the year in the post clogging the lane

Good strategy to take, he says all kinda nonsense anymore. He’s always been a salesman and said funny little things but now he just spouts out gibberish nonsense. “I haven’t seen him.” “Totally forgot he was on the bench.” “ Never watched this team play before tonight.” “I wanna score 80 a game, but I also wanna run the shot clock down to 0 and never run.”

I swear one game Cal’s itching to play Oscar, Ware, Collins, Livingston, and Toppin together. I can imagine it now. I thought that lineup gave up the best chance to defend the rim, grab rebounds, and really make this a rock fight to end all rock fights. Imagine trying to score on that length. Even though they wouldn’t score and couldn’t advance the ball past half court half the time.

Wheeler kills us on defense and shouldn't be on the floor when we need to lock down defensively or game is on the line.

Collins is mismanaged

Ware is essentially Marcus Lee, minus the eraser ability

And why does he feel the need to tinker with lineups when he won’t play over 7 guys in March?
I could understand tinkering if you wanted to play 10 or 11 guys, press the entire game, and go full speed.

We look like garbage because he is an inept coach.

Yup, he tossed that ball like it didn't matter, like he was on the playground.

Wheeler loses his mind in big games, unless it's a wide open, run up and down the court type game. When teams pack the lane and prevent runouts, he crumbles and simply can't be in there.

He totally crapped his pants in the SECT and especially the Saint Peters game. He couldn't hit free throws in key moments either. I really didn't expect that from him.

I've been saying it since the season ended last year, SW is an all star in a full court track meet type game, but in a half court game, he's a net negative player.
