Duquesne's coach on Wheeler

Well, he's right, Wheeler can kill you if you don't cage him in, the problem with Wheeler is he'll make a great play, then follow it up with two plays where he overpenetrates, jumps in the air and throws the ball away.
At this point in his career, he should know when to force the action and when to back out and run offense from the top.
I love seeing him in there, he just needs to play smarter.

The Duquesne coach isn't going to critique our guys the way we would, so it's really not fair to call out "the Wheeler haters", whoever they are.
1 good play then two bad??? Seems pretty disingenuous maybe even biased?

You're either misremembering or just lying. He shot 4-8 from the floor against St Peter's. He scored 11 in that game and made 1-2 from 3. TyTy shot 2-10. Grady shot 1-9. Brooks shot 2-7. That's why we lost, not Wheeler.

People have been blaming Wheeler for that loss for so long, some think the lies must be true. I guess someone should petition to have the box score removed from the archives. Haha! Although, it doesn't really matter, nobody ever actually looks at it. They just assume the lies here must be true.
True.

No, he doesn’t have to calm down. Some on the board have dogged Wheeler without mercy. It’s embarrassing. The guy is a hard nosed, quick, good passing, veteran point guard. He gets treated like dirt by some on this board. Our agreement on how to use Wheeler is absolutely irrelevant. Coaches make that call. Not the PlayStation Jocks that that think shooting is the only attribute a point guard can have.
But but Cason is a 5 star future pro, likely one and done. Better just on that alone.

I'm aware.

But again, both Wheeler and Wallace bring different, valuable competencies to our team. It's a nice way to change up the pace on defenses when they have to deal with a guard like Wheeler, a guard like Wallace, or in many cases, both at the same time.

And yes, overall Wallace is a much better shooter, we can all agree on that. Even the one three Wheeler hit last night was pretty ugly in form (feet set apart, awkward looking), and he's pretty crappy at that midrange. But he does have tenacity and a high propensity to get to the lane and dump off or do that one handed bank layup, which is kind of his bread and butter. He does occasionally try to do too much too quickly and gets into a bind - something he will need to improve on as we get into these better teams.
The jury is still out on Wallace being a “much better” shooter. Better form but he doesn’t hang his hat on shooting.

I disagree. You play Wheeler at pg along with Wallace at 2g. Play wheeler as many minutes as you can at pg, then put Wallace hat point when Wheeler is out.
Wallace going to play 40 minutes??? Those two should play very few minutes together. CJ and Reeves should never give up minutes for Wallace.

Wow, you got a hate boner for Wallace or something? Man, You just posted three straight comments in a row where you’re sh*tting on him. Are you Wheelers mom or something?

BTW, Wallace is ten times the shooter SW is, he’s done nothing but prove that since he got here.

I feel like replying to this thread with any comment besides….

“Wheeler is a star”

will be received with an obscene amount of hatred. So, I’ll just say good game last night Sahvir and I hope it continues vs MSU, Gonzaga, etc…

What the hell are we doing? Remember the days when everyone gave cal so much **** because we never had any veteran players? Now we have 45 year old wheeler who is an assist machine but we hate him. Wtf.

Wallace is great so far but you know what? We don’t know him. He could be Ryan Harrow next week. We are 2 games in. Y’all gotta figure this out.

More proof that your basketball acumen is limited to PlayStation and church league. None of us know what sort of shooter Wallace will be. He has never been subjected to defensive measures like he will experience this season. He has never played the game at the speed he is about to face. After Mich St and Gonzaga early this season then we’ll start to understand his play with some better idea.

Jeffy, I know you can’t comprehend this but there is a difference between holding a game controller and some guy crawling up your ***, bumping you every time the ref is not looking and trash talking your sister the entire game. Especially when that individuals speed, strength and skill set is equal or better than yours. You might be ready to crown this kid god’s gift to basketball even though he is untested in this venue. That’s not fair to Wallace though.

Another thing, sometimes Wallace will be more effective because of the opponent and sometimes Wheeler. It's nice to have multiple weapons. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
Wallace doesn’t have enough experience to basically platoon with wheeler. Giving up half his time at the pt will hinder his progress and he will never develop to full potential by the tournament. This is a great recipe for how to waste Wallace one year at Uk IMO. Wallace needs to be on the floor more than any other player. He is our lone back court freshman who will be seeing meaningful minutes. You play him half the time off the ball and that what 15 mpg at the point. Cal needs to decide now who is going to give us a better chance in March. If it’s Cason he has to comitt to 30 min a game at pg or none of this will work. Wheeler can only do one thing and that’s play with the ball in his hands and that’s the problem. He is only useful as a pg in certain situations. That is the clear definition of a role player.

and another thing. You can’t continuously pull Wallace when there’s a lot of pressure on the ball. He will never grow in that aspect. Wheeler at pg last year cost us the season as Scangarello did as oc on the fb side. The problem is cal has already seen this and the ole fool me once stuff comes into play.

We know for a fact that Wheeler, who I like, by the way, is a very poor shooter and struggles defensively against size.
Wallace has shown he’s a plus shooter in all the games he has played so far. He also rejected a guy at the rim the other day.

I'm not shitting on Wheeler, he's a heck of a pg, but Wallace shoots it better and defends better in the half court.

In a full court game, Wheeler is the guy. He's a jitterbug that can’t be stopped in the open court. He's the better choice there.

Wallace has shown nothing against top tier division basketball competition. He hasn’t played any.

Wheeler is the current assist champion in the SEC. Further, Wheeler’s defensive struggles stem from injury to himself and others.

Well, you make a good point and I agree. But I think you can easily see what Wallace is capable of. Cal is going to use both. He has 2 point guards at his disposal that he can use to cause problems for any team we may face. Those two guys can't be anymore different and that’s a good thing.

Says the guy that bitched constantly about not having experience. Cal will try to develop him. Wallace has potential, but what he can do against the best of division 1 basketball is unproven. You and others writing check he may not be able to cash does him no favors. Throwing Wheeler under the bus is embarrasing.

Wheeler is an important piece to our title hopes
No, he obviously isn't. Every player on the team is important. But Tshiebwe, the returning POTY, is obviously our most important player, especially since there is uncertainty about his knee.

Like any player, Wheeler has strengths and weaknesses. After watching him for a couple of years, Wheeler is almost unstoppable in transition, except when he overdribbles into traffic against taller players inside the lane.

OTOH, Wheeler is a liability as a perimeter shooter. Analysts keep opining that Wheeler will be better and better as his perimeter shooting improves. The problem is that his perimeter shooting is not improving. For this reason, some opponents have learned to back off of him so it is harder for Wheeler to drive or pass ahead into the lane. Notre Dame actually beat us that way last year. A good zone defense is also effective against a small PG who can't drain perimeter shots. With his skill set, Wheeler has no way to beat those strategies.

Wheeler habitually overdribbles into traffic. To his credit, he is so quick that he often works out if it. But most of his turnovers happen when he overdribbles into a double team near the lane.

Defensively, it depends on the matchup. Against some opponents, Wheeler is a defensive pest who produces steals with his quick hands and feet. Against teams with tall, athletic PGs, Wheeler's size can be exploited.

All in all, Wheeler is a very quick little player who can take a game to another level with his transition game, as he did last year against UNC. But his size and poor shooting mechanics are limitations for his game, especially when the matchup is bad.

This is especially important, because Cason Wallace is one of the best players on our team. Wallace does not have Wheeler's limitations. Wallace is a long defensive stopper, and he can shoot the lights out. So I hope Wheeler concentrates on distributing the basketball instead of trying to shoot it from the perimeter or driving the ball into traffic. When opponents back off of Wheeler and sag into the lane, Wheeler probably ought to be situationally replaced by Wallace at the point. If I see this, I think Cal sees it too. But I'm not sure whether Cal views the good of the team in that way, or whether he will decide that trusting in his senior PG in every situation is the better option. This is one of the most interesting aspects of this season IMO.

What are you, 80? You’re stuck in a time where the 2 handed set shot was the best thing ever.

LOL. Jeffy bluster and histrionics. Are you like 5’ 4”? Shorter? You got that little man thing going strong. Gotta love it, just like clock work. Well Jeffy, I think you can’t lose on this one.
