Wheeler is an important piece to our title hopes
No, he obviously isn't. Every player on the team is important. But Tshiebwe, the returning POTY, is obviously our most important player, especially since there is uncertainty about his knee.
Like any player, Wheeler has strengths and weaknesses. After watching him for a couple of years, Wheeler is almost unstoppable in transition, except when he overdribbles into traffic against taller players inside the lane.
OTOH, Wheeler is a liability as a perimeter shooter. Analysts keep opining that Wheeler will be better and better as his perimeter shooting improves. The problem is that his perimeter shooting is not improving. For this reason, some opponents have learned to back off of him so it is harder for Wheeler to drive or pass ahead into the lane. Notre Dame actually beat us that way last year. A good zone defense is also effective against a small PG who can't drain perimeter shots. With his skill set, Wheeler has no way to beat those strategies.
Wheeler habitually overdribbles into traffic. To his credit, he is so quick that he often works out if it. But most of his turnovers happen when he overdribbles into a double team near the lane.
Defensively, it depends on the matchup. Against some opponents, Wheeler is a defensive pest who produces steals with his quick hands and feet. Against teams with tall, athletic PGs, Wheeler's size can be exploited.
All in all, Wheeler is a very quick little player who can take a game to another level with his transition game, as he did last year against UNC. But his size and poor shooting mechanics are limitations for his game, especially when the matchup is bad.
This is especially important, because Cason Wallace is one of the best players on our team. Wallace does not have Wheeler's limitations. Wallace is a long defensive stopper, and he can shoot the lights out. So I hope Wheeler concentrates on distributing the basketball instead of trying to shoot it from the perimeter or driving the ball into traffic. When opponents back off of Wheeler and sag into the lane, Wheeler probably ought to be situationally replaced by Wallace at the point. If I see this, I think Cal sees it too. But I'm not sure whether Cal views the good of the team in that way, or whether he will decide that trusting in his senior PG in every situation is the better option. This is one of the most interesting aspects of this season IMO.
