Am I the only one who's not a fan? I don't hate them (like I do Tesla) by an means. I'm simply just not a fan. The same can be said for Dave Matthews Band. What am I missing?

Now, I fully expect to be skewered & lambasted for my "****** taste" in music. But, before you do so just know that my tastes & iTunes are eclectic. From Robert Johnson to Marilyn Manson; John Lee Hooker to Frank Sinatra; The Killers to The Darkness; Show tunes to DMX; George Jones to The Four Tops; Adele to Tom Petty; The Fugees to American Military Hymns; Bocephus to Etta James...

So, dead period and what not, PJ fans tell me what I'm not getting. The rest of you can just list the artist(s) with huge followings you don't "get" either &/or the ones you hate, like Tesla. I'll make this easier.

I don't get the draw of: Pearl Jam
I hate: Tesla
My guilty pleasure is: Shakira's Hips Don't Lie

Go...

I'm a pearl jam fan... I'm not going to try and convince you to be a fan. However, I do have a question regarding the guilty pleasure. Do you just enjoy watching the video or actually like the song?

Love me some old Pearl Jam. I hate Dave Matthews. Always have. And I like every name you listed after that.

Once PJ started the political rants on stage (early 2000), my interest waned.

I enjoy PJ but no big deal if you don't like them. I'm not a big Nirvana fan. Of the Seattle bands, Alice in Chains is my favorite.

I like that song & "Donde esta Corazon." Smoky, sultry voice. Like I said, guilty pleasure. Not one I blare in my truck. Of course when I hear it, I remember the video as well!

AiC always got lumped in as a grunge band but they really are more a metal band and they identified themselves as that.

I prefer Temple of the Dog. I can't stand Eddie Vedder.** If you're not a fan of Dave Matthews, who else are you hating in that era? Matchbox 20? Foo Fighters? STP? Oasis? Spin Doctors? Counting Crows? Blues Traveler?

Shirley you know that Tesla covered "Signs". It ain't all bad.

With all

due respect, DCD, I wholeheartedly disagree!
They were, to me, really the ONLY grunge band. Listen to their lyrics. It's the essence of grunge. Junkhead is the grunge songs amongst all grunge songs.

I see your point with the lyrics to a degree. Yet, musically AiC sound more RNR than grunge IMO.

Tesla rocks - pearl Jam sucks, so you're half right

I've never been able to get into any of the jam bands.

Guilty pleasure: gangsta rap from the early 90s

I enjoy Soundgarden as well. Chris Cornells vocals are unreal. The Day I Tried to Live is one of my favorites.

Again, completely disagree.

Even musically, Cantrell's riffs were so dark and dirty.

His dark riffs with Layne's dark lyrics make the best grunge band ever.

I like Pearl Jam. Love their lead guitar player's sound. Nothing better than his Strat going through his set up.

I agree with your dislike of Pearl Jam and love of that Shakira song. A surprise to a lot of people is that I detest Widespread Panic.

Confession: I nearly shed a tear after Prince's death.

I think it's pretty damn difficult to be a lover of music and dislike 90's era Dave Matthews. I'm not a Dave fan either but Crash and his live recordings with Tim Reynolds are near perfection.

I'm no music expert by any means. But, if AiC epitomizes "grunge" then the others that fall under that umbrella fell far short of the bar they set.

There's no argument

from me there. That's why I said they were the best ever. Don't get me wrong, I love the other bands, but Chains was king of the hill, and it's not even close.

Here is a big 17 you to Eddie for his comments towards gun owners. Pearl Jam major league sucks.

I wasn't at first. They grew on me. And the key was to listen to the stuff that doesn't play 5 times a day on the radio. It gets a few confused looks but "Elderly woman behind the counter in a small town" is one of my favorite songs by them. You never hear that on the radio.

Here is is a better one for you. In the past year or so I have become a big "The Who" fan. I casually listened in the past but listened to them more as they found their way on my YouTube mix. Seems fitting as they are on their farewell tour right now.

All in all I'm still a metal guy. Metallica has been in my library since I was a kid. I see them every time I can when they come within 300 miles.

I absolutely hate anything that passes for country now a days. I swear I would rather listen to a symphony with out of tune instruments.

guilty pleasure? Tupac. I haven't listened to any of it in a long while but I bet I still remember the words to a lot of his songs.

Oasis is great. Blues Traveler & STP are good. The rest...I have had less exposure to. Perhaps, that's my downfall.

If you're going

to like PJ, it's best you don't pay attention to Eddie's maniacal rants.

Who ho goes to grunge musicians for their world views, anyway?

This!

Never understood why someone says they won't support or like someone cause of different views. They put on a good show, so who cares.

I saw them at jazz fest in April and he didn't make one political statement. So, maybe he's chilling out. Or maybe he thinks all the candidates suck like they rest of us do.

Mudhoney

No mention yet of Mudhoney in a Seattle grunge thread? They were great.

Also a big fan of the Screaming Trees and Mark Lanegan. Lanegan still is putting out good music.

Have never owned a grunge Album/CD...If pressed I'd say AiC would be my favorite but can't stand that song called "Rooster". PJ has a hand full of songs I like but that's about it.

I REALLY dislike Nirvana and Sound Garden. Guilty pleasure? I don't think I have one....I just like what I like.

Slight hijack: I used to have this argument with a bartender but I don't see how

The Eagles aren't one of the top 5 or 10 all-time best American rock bands. Music is subjective and all that, but they were damn talented, highly influential, had a bunch of hits, married different styles of music to keep it interesting over a couple of decades... and sold a ****-ton of records.

I mean, but who's on the list above them? American Rock Bands. Go.

Metallica? like a few songs, but nah.
Aerosmith? Maybe but they're just... meh.
Dave Matthews Band? come on.
Allmans? Definitely yes.
Guns N Roses? love them, but they sure burned out early. Same with Nirvana.
Beach Boys? Probably #1 on the all-time list. The only American band who could rival the British invasion.
Van Halen. Like the music, hate the personalities. Maybe.
Journey? Meh, not enough great songs. ( The little Asian guy can wail though - have you seen him?)
The Doors? Maybe so.
Skynyrd? Yes. They would be on my list.
Motley Crue? Maybe.
Grateful Dead? could be.
The Byrds, Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, REM - arguments could be made... all maybes I'd say.

Back on the original topic, maybe a lot of people would put Pearl Jam on the list.
Personally, I might include Bob Seger and the SBB, but I'm not sure everyone appreciates his stuff like I do.

My buddy would always try to put Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers up near the top, but I consider them more of a one man show with backing band. Either way, i wouldn't put them above the Eagles.

Anyhoo, hijack/late night rambling over. Back to the Pearl Jam/Gun laws/Mississippi sucks threads.*

I cannot stand Bruce Springsteen and I'm not sure why.

I think I was jealous of him and Courtney Cox. Or maybe it's Little Steven's do-rags that enrage me. Probably both. I just don't get all the love.

I never really listened to country music until well into my 30's, but I've caught up now and probably listen to that (classics and some newer stuff) more than anything else these days. I think having kids, working, etc. mellows you out (or wears you down) so you appreciate the tempo and tone of it better later in life.

Guilty pleasure: I love the 80's. Both hair metal and rap (Poison, Crue, GnR or Run DMC, Beasties and 2 Live Crew... that was my jam in jr. high)

Little known fact: Boston is awesome.

I'm not sure that you can say Nirvana "burned out early" .... that was kinda by default, wouldn't you say.... Had Cobain lived, they very well may have gone down as one of the greatest American bands ever, especially with the influence from Grohl. Huge PJ fan though.

Funny you should post this, because I just picked up the Ten Peal Jam album the other day just to see what all the fuss is about.

Meh...

They had some good songs on there like Oceans, Even Flow, and Alive... but for the most part I cant understand what the lead singer is saying without a lyric sheet in front of me. I liked watching their Unplugged performance on Youtube a lot better. Don't get me wrong, Eddie Vedder has some chops, but something about his persona says serial killer to me. I think there where some good groups during the early 90's, but I think a lot of them like Nirvana were very over rated due to the fact that people were so ready to move away from hair bands that had pretty much become the new disco. Bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana were in the right place at the right time and people just ate it up.

Like the Eagles but don't love them, I'd put Creedence (CCR) above them. It's hard to watch more than a couple of movies w/o hearing a Creedence song. I think the band and John Fogerty are hugely underrated.

also can't stand Christmas, apple pie, and that song called "stairway to heaven"
