Cal did dangle him in front of the fanbase, but that's before he allowed a handler to control him.

Either way you want to shake it out, this is on Cal. He runs the program and once a kid signs to play at UK, nobody outside the program should have any control over that UK player.
If the terms changed, then Cal is only to blame for not tossing him off the team. Which I would’ve immediately done.

With the injuries, you look at him and his I’ll and say “You said you’d play if you were needed. You’re needed”.

They refuse? Off the team. Then you can say “I did what I could.”

Cal didn't waste him or dangle him in front of the fan bases face. Everything that happened after he got to UK was decided by his "camp". Why is that so hard to understand? Oh yeah. It doesn't fit the agenda. I get some of you hate Cal but to think he didn't want Sharpe to play and help us win more games is just ignorant.
What do you consider all that "come early to shoot arounds to watch Shaedon!" nonsense? And the UK bball twitter account posting videos of him with eye emojis every week.

The Power of Grey Skull Compels You!

I wonder how you plan to manage that. Seal people up hermetically? Chains? Jail cells? Cheez-whiz. It's a letter of intent. Not a life sentence. It's the equivalent of a handshake.

Oh 0kay, so I run a construction business and I hire a guy to frame houses, but his mom says he's not allowed to work, because he might get hurt. So I guess in your mind, I'm supposed to let this guy use all the benefits the Company provides while his mom controls my employee?

Same thing applies to the Sharpe situation. If he refuses to play, he needs to leave. What if everyone refused to play, but used UK's facilities and a scholarship?

It’s funny, because Ryan Harrow and Dontai Allen refused to play too, but Cal certainly didn't cater to their wants the way he did Sharpe.

If you don't understand how college basketball programs work, just sit there quietly.

I've yet to read that Sharpe is looking for top5 money. Got a link? This would be one of the only times I can think of, that a player returns to college actually tries college ball, instead of taking a high lottery pick.

And even still.. if one mock has him at 4 and the other is at 6.. the family is going to see that as pretty much "top 5 money". I highly doubt his family is going to pull him out because he might drop to 7th and make $600,000 less.

The writing is on the wall man.
Ok now you say “high lottery” that changes your statement. That makes a massive difference . and yes top 3 actually was the bar thrown out there by Washington and cal. But I believe 6 or 7 he likely stays in. The other variable @ralphdaltonfan had alluded to is that sharpes family may be looking for certain teams. If he fell to 6th like giovanny predicts to Indiana idk is that a franchise he want to play for? Same with lifeless kings? I think people underestimate the talent of sharpe and what they are trying to do here. If lottery or top ten even were the bar he would be gone the basement at the lodge cleaned out.

I’m so sick of these threads. Every little thought into a brand new thread. I swear.

Instead of Morg going to Grom, I think it’s time for Grom to go to the morgue. RIP (as a poster only. I’m also kidding, just thought that was clever)

I mention "high lottery" because I'm referring to the "top5" part you mentioned. 6 and 7 are still, to me, pretty high up in the lottery.

I still would need to see where top3, top5, or whatever was thrown out in a statement. I hadn't seen that yet.

If Sharpe and his camp are worried about being picked 4th by the Kings or 6th by the Pacers.. then what's the point of returning to college in an attempt to IMPROVE your draft stock, only to be taken by franchises in a worse off position? That makes no sense.

The other factor in all this.. is that Sharpe could get utterly exposed as a player, fall like BJ did, get ZERO guaranteed money, and he will basically need to spend his first few years clawing his way back into playing time... to the point that whatever extra money he "may" have gotten if he went a few spots higher would be totally nullified, and honestly, could wind up costing him over $100,000,000. Now, I dont think that would happen.. but why risk it? Why risk an injury? Why take away another year of your NBA career.. just in attempt to go from 7th to 3rd in the lottery?

Keep in mind, we all talk about how we think such and such franchises are terrible, and who would want to go to them.. but in the salary cap era, you can turn things around, and most of these players believe they can be that piece.

How many times have players declined a team, or said they wouldn't play for them? Eli Manning is the only one that comes to mind and that dummy probably had no idea what he was actually saying. It has to be like 0.05%. Elite players know they are going to bad teams.. that's how it goes.

I can't see how Sharpe would turn down anything in the lottery. It's clear what he and his camp wanted from the start, and it was the fast track, and easy path to the NBA.

Honestly, I think he'd stay in the draft if someone said "Well, we'd take you at 60, that work?". Not to mention, he has to know the fanbase is rightfully livid with him.

0.0% chance he comes back. Not even an NBA lockout would cause him to return.
So you are saying if he came back the fan base would (hate be livid) with Sharpe. IF he came back it would be what was said he would do. I think the fans would be glad to have him back. I don’t think he comes back just think you are wrong on your take!!

No, I think the fans would change their tune rather quickly. I agree. But he has to want to come back. He didn't seem to care to play for the fans and the Kentucky name from the start.. and I'm sure he's gotten word what fans (rightfully) think of him. So I don't see him jumping at the bit to come back here.

There's a chance he's now completely removed himself, in his mind, as being part of BBN/Kentucky.

Much more than anything though.. I just think he sees that he's about to make $10,000,000 in guaranteed money, and you don't turn that down. Doesn't matter if it's the Kings, doesn't matter if he thinks he can jump up 2-3 spots if he waits a year.. You take that, and start your NBA career.

If he leaves I am ready to move on to the guys we have on team. Tip it off next year would of loved to see Sharpe play but good chance it won’t happen.

I think if the kings take him 4th he’s gone 100%. You’re right he takes somewhat of a risk returning at that point. 6th though and the pacers? He probably stays in but I think it’s far less certain

A something else is tyty. I think he would be a top 10 pick if he had returned. Now it looks like he’s falling. TyTy could have made some serious nil money.

What’s so hard to understand about all the BS spin cal put on after it came out sharpe was indeed eligible for the draft. Cal was in total CYA mode. Then to make the “he will lead us next year” statement. If you really thought cal believed that for a second I don’t know what to tell you. The fact cal didn’t boot him from the team confirms my strong suspicions that cal himself was complicit in that whole charade.

I hate to see what happened here with Sharpe, but we need to just get over it.

Had he not reclassified, or whatever that was based on his graduation or foreign status, etc ...... he could have just stayed verbally committed and then declared before this coming season anyway. So he would have never played for us anyway.

Nothing was set in stone until the NBA approved his status for this year's draft. So both he and Cal rolled the dice. We lost. But we didn't get hurt much, our BB obviously can afford an extra school for 1/2 season and had the decision gone the other way we would have 1 season we otherwise were never going to get.

It sucks, but no more than if he was a verbal and then went pro anyway. Sharpe will make a nice donation like most of our first rounders did and let's just call it even and move on.

Not saying we have to love it, but the kid HAS to take a Top 10 draft slot. Its stupid money and regardless of all the circumstances getting there, its where we are now. This is all big business for schools, players, and coaches now. We fans are going to have to grow up (not insulting anyone, figure of speech) and accept that money runs ALL decisions at the highest level, even for players.

One other point, someone mentioned Cal might pick up someone late after draft order was set or even post draft.

When does the portal close for hoops to be eligible for next season? I saw were the FB portal was now closed for this year, meaning if you enter it now for FB you couldn't play until fall 2023. Basketball must have a similar date this summer?

What hit me is that Cal didn't add anybody because it would create tension among the guys he does have here. God forbid a kid actually has to COMPETE for a starting job at UK. Remember before last year how many were crowing that Cal was changing speed and was going to start hitting the transfer portal for the best players available every year. That lasted a long time didn't it.
It lasted about as long as “ We are gonna play faster this year”! lol

I get your point. But there is one difference (& I am NOT saying Cal didn't handle the situation poorly, he did).
This construction employee was hired under the stipulation that he would start framing houses next year, that he would watch and learn how we frame houses his first several months here. Now maybe that is not enough of a reason to say to him "things have changed, we need you, get you *** on the court", but it is a difference. Harrow and Allen had committed to playing and being part of the team for that season.

Doesn't matter when he started 'framing houses', but he was given an offer letter and a full benefit package. He signed the offer letter, showed up to work, but sat on his lunchbox and watched others work, WHILE reaping the benefits the company provides.

The company lost in that scenario and do did UK. You can't allow an advisor to dictate what one of your players does. No way.

Sharpe gets all the attention but Allen situation is worse. Actually refusing to play during a game.

I remember when Cal fake signaled in Sharpe he was ready to go. He didn’t shake his head he reacted like a player getting called into the game. His handlers are the ones causing the problems. Allen only handles himself...

Sharpe going 6th to Indiana based on giovanny latest. Could push sharpe to UK because he would be top 3 next year. Big difference in money. Cbs had him going to the kings 4th. I doubt he would be excited about a place where careers generally go to die.
ZERO CHANCE Sharpe comes back. He's done with UK.

Yeah it is. He isn’t looking for the lottery. Hes looking for top 5 money. The difference even between 6 and 3 is huge and nba guys, recruiting guys, the family have all said just being a lottery pick isn’t enough so yea false
Post a link where his family said he won't allow himself to be drafted unless he's a top 5.

I know the OP was halfheartedly joking, but woke Calipari wouldn’t allow SS to come back for the same reason he didn’t add any high caliber portal studs…

He’s become soft, and doesn’t want to “take someone’s heart” by having guys have to compete for spots. Certain players would cry (apparently) if they thought their starting spot was being threatened, and that’s the environment Cal has created.

Again, proving winning isn’t his #1 priority.

So, with all of that said, there’s a better chance a unicorn falls from the sky and hits a Sasquatch, than Sharpe ever withdrawing from the draft.
