My problem with the media perception......

picture this. Purdue, or Wake Forest, or Iowa State or any other also ran from a power conference hires a coach with one year experience in FBS coming off a 2-10 season. Said coach goes 7-6 in year 1 and brings in a top 5 recruiting class and continues to recruit far beyond his program's prestige, including landing prospects that true power programs want. Am I to believe the media aren't going to cast a disparaging eye on that? They aren't going to raise questions? They are just going to take everything on "faith", pun intended? And then when the NCAA does investigate and things start getting out, they are going to claim that nothing big will happen?

There is no way that would be the case at any of those kind of schools. Can you imagine Wake Forest getting a top 5 recruiting class and national writers just saying it's because of their coach's incredible savvy at recruiting? Can you imagine Laquon Treadwell, Robert Nkemdiche, and Laremy Tunsil signing with Purdue and the media just buys into "natural tie ins"? Hell, imagine if it had been us even.

This has been bothering me for weeks, why people just aren't willing or able to accept the theory that maybe Ole Miss did something wrong. That maybe, they went past hundred dollar handshakes and a couple of grand in a knapsack. They seem so sure and so ready to put this to bed. This is a big story, the person who breaks it is going to look good. Why are so many in this profession not chasing it?

Sallee is and always has been an idiot. Yea, nothing to see here relative to OM recruiting but Dan Mullen is on the hot seat. Just goes to show they will give any clown a microphone apparently that wants to talk about SEC sports.

I have to give them credit. They have done as good a job of controlling the media and getting their message and spin out as any school I've ever seen.

Partly because Ole Miss is an SEC team and people view SEC teams differently than those teams you just mentioned. Ole Miss has always recruited better than those teams, but that doesn't negate your main point that they "all the sudden" starting pulling in top talent from across the country.

The instate media is scared to death to report anything negative because of what happened to RB at the CL. I also think most of the instate media is completely incapable of doing any type of investigative journalism on this. Times have changed since this last happened to us and the media is not what it used to be.

About the little "Barrett Sallee problem", I simply don't understand it. Maybe he is just falling hook line and sinker for the spin that the Ole Miss media department is throwing out. He is simply reporting what they told him and it makes this whole situation not sound as bad. That's the only thing I can come up with. He might be ruining his reputation (if there ever was one). Maybe somebody on this site can make a slideshow of the top 10 reasons why Sallee is a sheep.

I think the alot of the national media has a wait and see attitude, but I'm starting to see the tide turn a different way.

I do think there are people chasing it, but they are professionals so they keep quiet until they have actual reliable info. Nothing, and I do mean nothing, major that has even been hinted at so far has been proven false on the negative side, while many of the positive spin memes have been shot down. Some small timers are going to take the Ole Miss side just for links, clicks etc (I put BS in this category plus he hates us), because it doesn't cost them anything as they have nothing to lose reputation wise. I'll be worried when someone with a reputation at stake starts to carry water for them.

You're exactly right. Change that Purdue or Wake Forest to Mississippi State, and you don't even have to be hypothetical. I don't remember off hand what Croome's final season record was, but overall it pretty much stunk. So we hire Dan Mullen, a person with name recognition and some very good experience at a school who recently won the national championship. He came in and recruited a little better, and had a decent first season, relative to Croome. Since then, he's taken the program to new heights over a span of several years. No brows have been raised about his honest leadership of our program (except Redmond, and that apparently was an anomaly), and he continues to do well.

But coming off that 2-10 season, the Bears hire somebody that most people had never even heard of, let alone knew anything about. All anybody knew was, after some research, that he coached high school basketball and most recently coached FB at a small school in Arkansas. Even many of the Bear fans were upset because they were expecting a Tony Dungy or equivalent, and they didn't know anything about Freeze either.

But he starts recruiting like an NFL team, and does it in a hurry. Their fans, of course, immediately fall in love with him. And he's presents himself as an evangelical Christian, which goes over well in the Bible Belt (being Christian is fine and most of us are, but we don't proclaim it through "bumper sticker" methods). They beat Bama twice in a row, win the Sugar Bowl, and go from mediocrity in recruiting to a top five class, edging out some of the truly big boys.

Nothing fishy there? Sure looks funny, doesn't it. And going to Ole Miss is nowhere near the attraction they like to think it is. It's neither an academic powerhouse nor a "go to" place for the vast majority of students or players.

Here's another one to chew on. Nobody ever got under the bears' skin like Jackie. After the '97-'99 years they'd had enough.

That's when the Clarion-Ledger was fully weaponized in this state (and it remains today). For TWO YEARS there were weekly updates on the "Widespread Investigation" into Sherrill's program. And rest assured, It wasn't the eventual penalties that killed Jackie Sherrill at MSU. It was the cloud that was placed over his program LEADING UP to the penalties. And in the end, what did they get us for? Doug Buckles took $20 from his host on his recruiting trip (and ratted on us after flipping to the bears because David Cutcliffe went racial and sat with his parents and used a tape of the Dog Pound Rock against us) and a coach paid for a recruit to take a summer class because he felt sorry for the guy coming from a deplorable home life.

Fifteen years later and there's been a THREE YEAR investigation into Ole Miss Athletics. .....And the Clarion-Ledger hasn't said jack ****. Bjork and Freezus were allowed to lie to recruits until 24 hours before the quiet period in recruiting. The Clarion-Ledger was complicint in duping 18 year old high school kids into thinking the school they were signing with didn't have a storm coming. Stories have been suppressed... Reporters run off.. Outright lies knowingly printed...

It's shameful, really. If you laugh someone off as a kook, or a conspiratorist when they say the media in this state sides with the bears, then you are a fool.

Mullen's trolling is what led to their coming unhinged this time as well. Even though we aren't their rivals nothing gets the cigars lit up in Oxford like losing 3 eggs in a row.

Ole Miss has an outstanding brand and media strategy. If I asked you to think about 3 things that Ole Miss wants you to think about their school, I'm sure you could come up with 5 in 30 seconds. It's not because they are arrogant pricks, it's because they cultivate their message and image.

Could you do the same for MSU? Give me 3 reasons why a kid from Michigan should come to MSU? You might be able to think of some, but do you see those reasons in any of our marketing? What about in the media in general?

They are also masters at managing communications. They get journalists on their side to spin the positive message and they punish the negative ones. It works.

Seeing that the SEC is the premier conference, so let's change the team to Kentucky. The 5 years prior to Hugh's arrivals Mississippi had a total of 27 wins while Kentucky had 31. I'd say that's comparable. Now how would people be acting if Kentucky was doing this?

I like Barrett but on this one - I think he's completely wrong. It's a good thing Ole Miss has an ex-coach get fired because of things he did at Ole Miss. He is trusting that what the OM admin is saying is 100% correct. And that has proven to be untrue. They are skating around everything and not speaking of definitives so when something else comes out - they can say we didn't necessarily say that.
