OT: Really need your guys prayers

I NEVER bring anything personal to the board but lately, I have been dealing with a family member's health issues. Currently, I live with my aunt and uncle. My Uncle has been dealing with early dementia issues that have put a toll on me as well as other members of my immediate family so I have been helping out with everything.

Its been so tough on us that there are times my uncle sometimes doesn't recognize who we are and talks to us in the 3rd person like we are not there.

One thing that really sucked about this Basketball season was the one thing that kept everything normal around here dealing with my uncle. So when it ended early things seemed to take a further downward spiral with his condition.

I just ask for your guy's prayers for me and my family, it's been emotionally tolling on us. close to breaking point at times

We have some on the DVR, he knows they are replays and says "Didn't we just watch this?" we tell him, no, but he knows better. Thank God for "The Masters" is on after hoops ended. He enjoys that. Glad I subscribed to Paramount + so he could watch LIVE before it airs on TV

Positive thoughts and vibes sent your way, OP. Dementia is pure evil. My grandma had Alzheimer's when I was younger, and my family went through something very similar.

Oh my gosh, BWO, I really know what you are going through. My mother had dementia and now my MIL does too. My older brother took care of our mom for many years until his health became so bad we had to get her into a home. Every time I visited she recognized me less and less.

Mr. YouKay and I watched over his mom until she was unable to take care of herself anymore. She’s 91 and now living in a home in Florida near our older brother. Unlike my mom, who gradually and peacefully declined, but was always cheerful and funny, she is very angry about it and that has made it harder on the family.

I encourage you to reach out to your local Agency on Aging for resources that can help caregivers. If you have a church they might also be able to connect you with local agencies. Getting some respite care once in a while can be a big help. We were able to do that for my brother a few times while he still had Mom at home.

In the meantime I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Taking care of a family member with dementia is emotionally and physically draining. People who haven't gone through it have no idea how hard it is.

Thanks St. P, Just feel like bawling sometimes. I consider myself very strong for my family who needs that right now. When I'm by myself I'm close to breaking down. I tend to stay away from this board just because of everything that's gone down and the negativity, don't want to look at the topics. I just needed to come on here and spill my guts on what Ive been going through. I don't want to push away from things I love the most.

Thanks Youkay, really means alot. Yeah its tough.

One good thing is my aunt is still well enough to help out here at the house, he has his son and nieces to step up a bit as well. They live about an hour away. So its just not me here doing it all. We do have a nice church nearby who has offered to help as well.

Will definitely reach out to other sources when it's needed.

The biggest issue we are going through right now with him is refusing to eat at times... we've got to say.. you've got to eat and if you don't put it right in front of him he won't eat. He's able to do things for himself most of the time, however its almost like him not eating is kind of being lazy. I'm just emotionally spent

Fortunately I have no personal experience with dementia or alzheimer's but I did have an Uncle (my favorite) years ago that had similar problems...but his was a brain tumor. One time we visited him....he didn't recognize his wife, his kids, my parents, me...but knew my wife who he had only met 2 or 3 times (he would always call her Georgia Peach 'cause that's where we met and lived at the time). That was sad but not a daily occurrence with a family member like what you are dealing with BWO. I can't imagine how difficult and sad it must be.

I will keep you in my prayers as I pray for others I know who need the Lord's strength and peace.

Dementia is tough. Went thru it with MIL and my mom to an extent. Also an uncle although didn’t see it up close due to distance.

Praying the Lord will give you strength. You have to take care of yourself

Wow, you even more amazing than I thought you were. Stepping up to help your family is no small thing. They are very lucky to have to there.
I've seen a lot of people who don't have family support try and do this on thier own.

It's a constant sick desperation when trying to care for someone with dementia. The frustration and stress can be overwhelming.

I hope you are using outside resources. I know you said you would use them when needed and hope you really do. It's ok to ask for help. Caregivers sometimes forget to take care of themselves.

Best wishes BWO. It’s a difficult thing to deal with. Try to stay positive and look for the silver linings as hard as it may be. Positivity can be contagious, much like a sneeze.

You and your Aunt and Uncle will be in the thoughts of many in the BBN.

Prayers for you BWO . My Dad had dementia and he was a very loving man and a great Dad but who every the caregiver is (which happen to be my Mom) it is they that seem to attack the most. Just remember it is part of the sickness that affect them and they have no control over it. Hopefully you have someone to help you so you can step away for a while.

Thanks, everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Its greatly appreciated ... Every day is a challenge and Im fully prepared to take on the challenge. I know its not going to be easy but that's what comes with this condition.

I've got a second thing I hate that robs people of their lives. Cancer and Dementia both run in my family :(
