The only scenario that makes sense to me:

Sharpe didn't think he was eligible, wanted to get a head start on next season. Got on campus, found out he was eligible, his inner circle advised him not to play once mock drafts came out that showed he was in the lottery, in some cases top half of the lottery.

At that point Cal couldn't really do anything that the fans would have liked.

Can't make a guy play who doesn't want to.
Cal already told him he could prep for next year w/o playing. Would look badly on a coach to renege on something like that.
Kicking him off the team because of refusal to play looks even worse.
So you accept the only positive thing that can come from it, a slight association w/ a possible NBA star.

Yeah, sucks, I don't expect him back either, but I can't come up with a reasonable scenario where Cal wanted it to play out like this. I think most people who aren't pitchforks and torches can see this reasonable angle.

If it comes out that Sharpe knew all along he was eligible and knew he'd never play, well that's a different story, but we have no evidence of that.

If only Cal had stayed away from, and refused a commitment by the #1 rated recruit in the class who -- at the time -- was not expected to be eligible to go to the NBA until the 2023 draft. Or, when he was determined to be eligible for the 2023 draft, Cal had kicked him out of Lexington. Either of those outcomes would have been so much better.

We could have had a guy like Nick Smith if not for this crap but of course you would defend the love of your life Cal.What a joke you are.

The part of this that really doesn't make sense is the "he didn't think he was eligible, and then found out he was!"

There was obviously some work going on behind the scenes, paperwork, lots of phone calls, meetings, something happening to ensure that he was going to be eligible. And he had to have known that work was being done behind the scenes to try and make him eligible. A fairy didn't fly in and sprinkle magic draft dust on him and make him eligible overnight without any work being done to make that happen. Saying he just "found out he was eligible!" is nonsensical.

Excellent, rational post on this. You'll get torn to shreds by haters, but this is very sensible.

Cal had a deal with Sharpe, UK and Cal honored it, not it's up to Sharpe to honor his end.

I think he leaves and I will root against him forever because of that, but your take is more likely to be correct than Cal didn't care and knew all along.

Appears to me UK thinks he plays next season. They aren't reaching out to kids that could take his empty spot. Yet, anyway. lol
Won't do UK any good to reach out until next year's recruits know what Sharpe and the rest of the players currently on the roster are doing next year.

Can't blame them. If they commit and Sharpe stays, Cal will bury them on the bench behind Sharpe and Brooks.

This is the biggest reason Cal is left scrambling every year.

I can't believe the compromised position he has the program in right now. Ugh!!

Look, this Canadien pipeline has been pretty good to us. Don’t think you risk burning down that bridge in this instance. That’s shortsighted.

So this guy didn’t know if he could possibly be eligible to make millions of dollars within a year? Give me a break.

Is telling a guy to go home, you’re not using me or this team really worse than showing everyone else you can use and abuse me if you want? You think the players respect Cal less if he does that. Or do they respect him less after he lets Sharpe come in, use the facilities, get NIL money, and then never helps the team win?

Do you honestly believe that anyone that has a different opinion on this Sharpe matter are actually Cal haters?

If so, might want to check yourself. Just because you agree with an opinion, you nor me nor anyone posting their "opinion" on this matter actually know what transpired in this situation.

What we do know is that it has created a lot of turmoil among the fanbase and probably on the team also, since the team took an inexplicable nosedive AFTER Sharpe became a "member" of the team, without doing anything to earn what he received.

That is a bad look for Cal, whatever the details are.

People get to worked up over this guy Sharpe! He hasn't even played a game on the college level! Not saying he isn't good or gonna be good and we might not find out. So what if he is another Boston then what?

Unless you were in the room for conversations between Sharpe and Cal you don't know what actually happened. No sense in getting so upset about a scenario that's just full of hypotheticals and assumptions.
That's false, we can infer a lot from actual quotes from Cal and Sharpe's handlers. We know, for example, that Cal stated that he would not insert Sharpe into the Auburn game "just to win." That implies that he had the authority and the ability to put him in the game but chose not to. That begs the question, WHY? There are only so many possible reasons. Either Sharpe didn't want to go in, or Cal didn't want him to go in. Either way it looks bad for Cal and divides the fanbase.

We also know for a fact that Cal despises the fanbase, calling them "basketball bennies."

Put those two things together and it is very obvious that Cal does not care what the fanbase thinks, but does what he wants to do. His contempt for the fans actually implies he's working at cross purposes.

Nope, don't think that and never said it. Just said the OP would get torn to shreds by haters. You need to check yourself and read before coming at someone.

Most rational level posters will chime in their opinions

Nowhere did I suggest he wasn't trying to become eligible. But he had no guarantee that would work out, so he should just not attend college and follow his original plan because of a maybe, because of a might?

Dreaming up scenarios to support your position does not mean that your opinion is either rational or level, just because YOU agree with that opinion

You called out the "haters", not me.

Nice passive aggressive post. Have a nice day.

He didn't have to make a commitment to a school and give them their word about playing and destroy our recruiting class.Go to the G league.

You misread my post, it happens.

I have no problems calling out the haters, them and the extreme Cal lovers are making this board hard to be on.

Have a good one

Your entire post is trying to come to conclusions by reading between the lines of what people said and trying to read the tea leaves. I stand by my statement. Unless you were in the room you don't know what actually happened.

God you are clueless.
If Sharpe had gone to Duke or UNC or Kansas, you would have said damn Cal should have taken him just so they couldn’t and that Cal can’t get thebest anymore. Again, criticize Cal for boneheaded on the court decisions, but Cal’s in a no win here. Its easy to Monday morning qb. I would be more concerned with Sharpe’s lack of competitiveness if he chose not to play which is apparently how this went down.

That's the reason I asked if that was what you meant. That's why I hate texting and posting on these sights. Easy to misread the intent of the post or read something into it that just wasn't there.

Have a nice day. Go Big Blue.

You sound like the defense attorney:

Mr. Johnson, did you actually witness the bullet leave the gun when my client pulled the trigger?....NO YOU DID NOT! THEREFORE HOW DO YOU KNOW IT ACTUALLY HIT THE VICTIM? YOU DO NOT! Your honor, there were no witnesses to this crime, so the defense......RESTS. [sits down triumphantly]
