UK Needs A Home Grown Coach

This growing debacle created by CCC is all the evidence required that UK needs a homegrown coach to get us out of this mess. Unfortunately, this isn't likely to happen because UK doesn't develop former players into coaches. We need a head coach who loves the program as much as the fans so that the program regains the top priority instead of CCC and the players. It is clear that Cal has made UK third to him being first and players second. There is zero reason to believe that this will ever change because Cal has never considered the program and fans as his top priority. Unfortunately, there is a zero chance of a former player becoming the coach at this point.

Well, if the idea is for Cal to groom a former player as a candidate, I don’t see many options.

There’s no chance Cal is ever gonna take anyone from the Pitino family as an assistant. And I don’t know any of his former players here (other than Brad) who’ve expressed an interest. Do you have anyone specific in mind?

I think he is grooming Brad right now to follow him. (a joke) A think he would like to.

You are probably right, but I don't think he or anyone like him would be good for the program. We need someone who loves UK as much as we do.

Many of us laughed about UNC hiring Davis; however, they might be having the last laugh. If Duke's replacement demonstrates that he can handle the job, we will really be in danger of falling behind the other blue bloods.

I agree with your response which makes the situation even more depressing.

UK needs positive fans instead of all these negative nannies.

Winning is important, not where they came from. I’d take a winning/qualified Duke grad over a former UK guy that isn’t as good.
Enough money can get you any coach you want, but it won't get you someone who loves the program as much as someone who played here at least 3 years. Why at least 3 years? I want someone who was here long enough to really develop a love for the university and the fans.

What you want means nothing. Thank goodness.

Not many people love this program as much as the people on this board. I want none of them coaching this team. Give me a winner. Cal was the best coach for this program for almost 10 years but he forgot it was a 10 year job.

Cal is the same *** that he has always been. When he was able to recruit overwhelming talent to overcome his lack of coaching to win, fans simply tolerated him. Winning isn't important enough to me to accept another CCC as coach.

I would love to have a a homegrown coach here at UK as well. Hell, at least some homegrown assistants. The wife has been wishing for Tyler Ulis ever since he left. 😆

I wouldn’t mind Frank Vogel. I really think he would consider it, if the timing was right. The timing would be key with just about any candidate, however.

Coach K and Williams loved their universities enough to groom their replacements well ahead of their departures. What is CCC doing besides turning it into a joke? When CCC leaves, we will be in worse shape than when Sutton left. To make it worse, there won't be an RP type coach in waiting to keep things together until the talent level can be rebuilt.

A thought experiment. Coach Smith and Pitino left the same year, 1997. Since then both UK and UNC have taken two different approaches to hiring. Both have led to good and bad seasons, but the results are probably a wash, more or less. The question would be which path did you like better?

Chris Holtman has done a solid job at a school that is 100% football. Loves UK. Nice man. No drama. With UK’s resources and his historical knowledge he would be a very solid hire.

But if he’d won more we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Winning is what matters.
