Hell the guys that have a reputation for shooting all of a sudden can’t shoot when it matters the most .

Grady
Book
Murray
Herro
Monk
TyTy

Some of it is they are cold and seem of it has to be the offense being so pathetic they aren’t getting good looks .
It's this pattern that has to be addressed by Cal. It has happened too often in the last 6 seasons. My question is what is Cal doing, or NOT doing, that causes his best scorers to go COLD in the NCAA Tournament????

But that isn't all of it, his teams also have a problem coming up with defensive stops. This St. Peters team was one of the WORST in the country in scoring efficiency, yet they shot 52% and the kids that score the most were not even their best players.

WHY???

It’s been the tell of the tape since 14 when us forcing it inside was the “tweak” and we made the title game.

Since then Cal has a force the drive or post mentality and it kills our offense and makes it hard for shooters to get clean looks.

This year he tried it until ND and it didn’t work so he was forced to play open and spread the floor....the injuries happened and OT had developed enough post game to where he was successful playing through him in that stretch...we got the guards back but Cal still wanted to play through the post first and that isn’t where Grady, Mintz, TyTy, or Wheeler are best. We are an open floor transition team that Cal tried tk make play half court the last third of the season

We most definitely looked better when we were playing uptempo .

Hell not even just this season but it’s amazing for a guy that has recruited so many athletes yet he doesn’t consistently run run run .

You just can't have three kids on the floor that can't shoot the basketball. Wheeler, Brooks, Toppin, and Oscar.

The wife and I were watching Indiana’s first four game and commenting on how so many of those dudes are not actual basketball players. They have some decent athletes, but very few people who can shoot the basketball.

Obviously it didn’t work out too well for them in the first round either. Sadly there are some similarities between their roster construction and ours.

Ya'll are too faithful to Cal's words.

"I pulled Grady, he wouldn't shoot"

Malarky, all of it.

This is a man that stood four feet from Monk as he was dismantling UNC with 3's and screamed "DRIVE" in his ear. Who then lamented the fact that Monk shot so many three's in the post game show with Monk standing next to him.

We don't play modern offense. We barely play any offense at all. Wheeler started the year under control with tempo. Cal effs with his players heads so much (GOOOOOOOOOOO) that he completely ruined Wheeler's tempo and control.

Wheeler would be awesome if Cal didn’t surround him with 3 guys who can’t shoot. He has no where to go when he drives.

I totally agree with this. Just like the Tennessee game, our perimeter game **** the bed. I wish I could figure out why. They had 2 guards outplay our perimeter. And we supposedly have a lottery pick. Do they even have a player who will be drafted?

Part of the reason is because we slow it down and turn it into a half court game . I can’t remember the last time we were consistently great in half court sets . I don’t understand why Cal teams doesn’t run more .

Wheeler is a good point guard. The problem is his coach didn’t reel him in when it was needed. The coach allowed him to be out of control at times. Wheeler led the SEC in assists and was 3rd in the nation. Rod Strickland was good at developing point guards when he was at Kentucky. You could tell Wheeler had no one developing throughout the season. Cal did him no favors by not coaching him like a coach should.
PG is an extension of the coach. Wheeler has some great qualities but he lacks size and shooting. Those two things are a lot to overcome especially in the high pressure cooker that is UK basketball.

OP is biligerent. Bad takes constantly. Never seen a poster fall so far so fast.
If you think Wheeler leading UK next year (most likely with a weaker supporting cast and less shooters around him) is going to yield better results, pass the damn pipe already.

Absolutely.

I think Cal leaves. The roster is weak af. Even if Oscar returns, he returns with a worse supporting cast. But anyone over Wheeler will be an improvement. No BB IQ. Came here and exhibited same flaws he had before.
You are retarded. You have no clue what the roster will look like. We have 2 solid recruits coming in. Other than that, we don’t have a clue. So don’t act like you know

Once again this board is wild.

And you still think it’s completely normal to call people “retarded” in 2022.

I’m not all about political correctness. But, yeah, 90’s were over a while ago.

He's fine as a back up but not the starting point guard at UK.
Yes, this. He would be a good, chance of pace spark of energy backup playing 10-12 mpg, exhausting the other team's PG. But he can't start, especially if we have only 1-2 good shooters on the floor.
So yeah, I'd welcome him back in that role. But if he can't handle not being the primary PG, then yeah he would need to go.

I like Wheeler and looks like he gives 110%, but in reality he is an undersized PG and below average shooter. You would think with his speed he would be great at staying in front of other point guards defensively, but not really. He tends to gamble and dive on defense a lot.

I would like to see Wheeler go overseas and have some success and make a few million over the next 5 years. For a championship, I think we need a PG with less turnovers and more fundamental defense and shooting would be a big bonus.

I have the exact same questions about him now that I did when we signed him. Why would Cal, a guy who loves length and athleticism, sign a short point guard that can't shoot? Granted his shot looked a little better at the end of the year, but I still cringed every time he took a shot outside of 5 feet. These are the kinda players Cal is bringing in now. They are just nowhere near as talented as some of our former guards.

Wall, Knight, Fox, even Harrison. Wheeler seems like a great kid, but he is SEVERAL notches below most Cal point guards.

I like Wheeler. I don’t so much like how he was utilized towards the end. We didn’t play a 4 out like Cal said and Oscar wanted. Funny thing is, Oscar was the PERFECT 5 to run a 4 out offense around.

But when you only put 2 shooters around Wheeler, and don’t run any plays to get a guy open for 3, Wheeler’s inability to shoot becomes highlighted.

So if we have a similar roster and similar style of play next season, I would like Wheeler as a sixth man. I’m not sure he would like that, but I’m not sure I care at this point. We need to win.
