Tubby argument

For years, there has been one specific argument about Tubby. Did he only win a National Championship because he had Pitino's players? I used to argue yes, but the more I've examined it over the years? The more I think, while it helped, he still had to lead those young men.

Having said that, I'll get to my question. Would Cal have won it all in 98 with Pitino's players? I honestly don't think so. What say you?

It’s a damn question and it’s a Kentucky message board. If y’all don’t like it then go the hell on good grief.

No he wouldn’t not have won that title. There’s just no way. We had to comeback in each game because Tubby refused to let them run as much as they had been. He stalled it up and Calipari is worse at stalling up. No way he wins 6 straight.

I still can’t believe we got through 2012 now that I look back. It’s pretty lucky.

This was kinda what I was thinking. Too bad it offended so many Cal fans.

Nope…I’ve always felt like Pitino made the jump when he did bc he didn’t feel like he had a championship club in ‘98. No Mercer, Anderson.

So, when we win, it’s because of the players. If we lose, it’s because Cal can’t coach? do you people understand how stupid you sound?

I just don’t think at this point you need to be calling people stupid. Not that I don’t like you. But man, that’s not wise. No one looks more foolish right now than the Cal fan club. He’s duped yall pretty bad.

The guys a fraud.

Tubby did a masterful job with the team-whether he lead it or stood out of the way, he did what he had to for the win.

No Cal wouldn’t have and Tubby would’ve never been able to assemble the 2012 team. Mike Vick wouldn’t have been as good if he wasn’t so fast. What’s the point?

I’m going to say Rick wouldn’t have won with that group, Tubby was the right coach for those players. Tubby can coach but won’t put up with handlers, or local bull crap. And hated kids that thought they were owed time, he wanted hungry players.

The point is that this is a message board where we discuss all things UK basketball. Crazy concept.

You either can't read or either your comprehension is off. I have been called a lot of things on this board, but never has anyone accused me of being a Cal supporter. My recent posts should be proof of this.

Did I tag you in that post? If not, then maybe you shouldn't assume you were who I was referring to.

you’re not of the Cal Cult that’s for sure, but attacking this question is unnecessary. I think if you look again his question is actually decent, we always given tubby **** because it was Ricks recruits, but could Calipari had even won with them in this day and age? No way.

I just get tired of posters beating up on Tubby. The guy may not have done all the things that we wanted, but he was one of the most decent coaches UK has ever had. He was a class act.

Actually the question was would Calipari had won in 1998 with those players. And I think the answer to that question is yes. The Calipari of 98 is different from the Calipari of 2022. The game today is totally different from back then.

That team was a lot like Calipari’s UMass teams. They were less athletic, but were just as tough, played through the post and had shot makers at the guard position. Calipari could have won with them back then. Not so much in todays game.

Tubby did a heck of a job with that group, but there was talk of the team saying that they went back to playing Pitino's style late in the season. Whether that's true or not, who knows. I give him all the credit as those were "The Comeback Cats" and it takes good coaching to keep coming back like that and they obviously liked him and played hard for him.

Coach K (so overrated) did us a HUGE favor by not taking his pet, Wojo, out and putting Avery in the game in the E8 game. Duke wins if Avery guards Turner most of the 2nd half. Turner went to work and abused Wojo. I give Tubby credit for exploiting that garbage coaching job by K.

Never forget taking a cab to the Airport that Tuesday morning. Had a horrible hangover. dehydrated, it was sunny and I had lost my sunglasses. I was ready to pass out, but then the DJ on the radio said "This is to all you cat fans that are still in San Antonio"............he then played Cat Scratch Fever. I made the cabby turn it up and he laughed all the way to the Airport.

I get that. Cal can get talent other people can’t and people use that to take that away from Cal as a coach. I hear too many times “give X Cal’s talent.” Well that guy can’t get the talent Cal can. Tubby is a better X’s and O’s guy and Cal is a better recruiter.

We all loved the 98Cats. They were good, but that was not the most talented team. There was no one even considered as a potential AA on that team. So I never bought the he only won because of RP players

Winning with someone else’s players is not the diss you think it is. That’s because at the end of the day you’re winning. Thank God Pitino recruited at a high level and left a bunch of hard working dudes that went for the kill in the final 8 minutes, instead of shelling up like a scared turtle. How fortunate we are as fans to have been able to bring in a guy who could win it all with them.

My post wasn't beating up on Tubby, it was beating up on Cal. While Tubby had his faults, he was and is a great human being.
