Respectfully, serious question: Have there been any players, top picks or otherwise, that we know of that Cal has tried to get to stay in all the years he's been coaching here? Maybe there have been some that I was not aware of.
No idea. But we are in a different time than in 2013, or 2016, or even in 2019. Cal can't keep forcing kids to the NBA and using the model he's used that worked so well up until recently. Not to mention Sharpe is a different case entirely: he never played.
Cal's model of "getting kids to the NBA" only works if he has a job.
Also, I've never been fully convinced that Cal cares THAT much about simply getting kids to the NBA, where everything else is a distant second. I've always believed it was more of a sales pitch, and something he could "sell" to recruits to get them to come here, help UK win, and have this system feed us recruits the following year. To me, Cal was smart about this, and made a system that that most of the time, could do both: Help kids to the NBA and in turn, make teams that can win in March.
If he loses Sharpe, not only is that another nail in his coffin here at UK, but not securing him for next year could mean the difference between a 25-win/Sweet16 year.. or a 32-win/Final-4 year. And I'm very confident Cal knows this.
