Primary Source: John Higgins. Secondary source: Mich state was up 15 @Maryland in the 2H and somehow won by 2 spread -3.5. The analytics are disguised as Home court advantage although I've seen it work both ways.

Yes…and it doesn’t have to always involve gambling. Blowouts equal changing stations and with officials having conference affiliations, there’s incentive to try to keep games close so ratings stay strong and networks can keep advertising dollars high.
Lots of easy money to be made? Hard to prove you're on the take? Absolutely.
I'm sure they are some crooked refs, but I did it on the high school level for a while and honestly cheating a team never once came up in all my years. Getting caught up in the home team atmosphere might be another issue. There is money on the college level, so I assume it could be possible..
My answer kinda depends on the wording.
Do they …as in a “regular” thing? Nope, not buying it. But “have they” …as in ever? Absolutely, Yes. There’s SO much money to be made in sports gambling, and refs have so much control over games, that one would have to be hopelessly naïve to think it never happens.
But I doubt nearly as much as some of our more paranoid and conspiracy-minded fans believe.

I second this recommendation. There was good insight in that documentary, such as where Hedake explained how he made it look like he was playing hard when he was really shaving points.

Absolutely NOT. Sorry but this conspiracy theory is just false. 100% false. It has happened very rarely just like fixing horse races. Crooks are everywhere but 99.9 % of college games are NOT ‘fixed’. As someone said, refs may get caught up in a ‘home’ environment but they don’t walk on the floor with the intent of cheating. Again, not saying it hasn’t happened but it is NOT a frequent occurrence.
He got his nickname largely based on this reason.
People noticed that there were essentially two Ted Valentine refs. He was a pretty good ref in the obscure games when not many people were watching. But then he’d transform into the whistle-happy attention-craving showboatin “TV Ted” ref whenever he did a nationally televised game.
He loved the cameras and wanted them on him as much as the players and coaches …which is a terrible personality trait for a referee.

I think it's more personal flaws and ego than actually straight up fixing. More like "affecting the outcome". It is funny how often Vegas gets it right though. Could be more common than I think.

I think not. Maybe 20-30 years ago, definitely. Now days I just dont think it happens. Hell it might once in a blue moon( like keeping games close), but with the technology we have, the replays and such I just dont see it. For live in game action, game going so fast, most do a damn good job, IMHO.
With Duke leading 62-57, Cook rebounded a missed 3-pointer from Utah forward Jordan Loveridge with 10 seconds to play. Utah defenders tried to tie up Cook to force a jump ball, but nothing was called, and it appeared time was going to run out. The Utes started walking off the court. The Blue Devils began celebrating. But officials whistled a foul on Utah guard Brandon Taylor as the horn sounded. The refs went to the monitor and put 0.7 seconds back on the clock, before calling players back onto the floor for Cook's free throws. The senior missed the first one but made the second to give Duke a six-point win.
Didnt something like that happen with UK this year as well? A bettor put big $$ on UK to cover the spread which was 22, I think. Anyway final seconds Zan Payne was fouled and hit both free throws to cover.?

Right The Vegas spreads are always on point. You think that these spreads are on some insane algorithms or just hey X ref keep it within 10 and you get 30k.
We had a ref when I played that loved to call charges. He would always run away from the action to make sure that nobody was blocking him from the crowd before he would give his infamous charge call. We were getting ready to play a district tournament game one year and the refs dressing room was near ours and he was in there spraying on hair spray and practicing his calls in the mirror. He was like TV Ted and loved the spotlight..It was comical when I look back on it.
The guy actually quit due to point shaving high school games. I don't know if they still do, but back in the day local bookies did have high school basketball lines..I didn't know it at the time, but assume my early foul trouble every time the guy was on our games might of had something to do with the local books. His games were the only ones I had that problem in.

Also----Do refs Fix Football and Baseball games? You don't hear it mentioned near as often. Basketball is by far the hardest game to officiate.

If you've ever been to the Sweet 16 there is a 13th or 14th region official down there who sets lines and you can bet on every state tournament game.
Four words, Jamie Luckie, John Higgins. Nothing else needs to be said.
It's happened in the NBA before and I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't happen in College basketball. It would be hard to prove but I'm skeptical about.
No doubt in my mind that some, not all, college referees are on the take to manipulate the outcome of games. They have to be very careful of course, and not obviously affect every game. But over the course of multiple seasons, their benefactors can make millions.
