I know Kentucky fans are supposed to be some of the most intelligent basketball fans in the country, but y'all miss the point with Pearl.

He's a better recruiter than coach, though he's an excellent coach. When you have the talent Auburn has it's not that difficult to win, especially if you have fire and energy and set that as the tone for the team and the program base - with the fans and boosters - fire and energy are something he has in abundance. He has a magnetic personality, is a genuinely nice man and has become Auburn's biggest ambassador. The fans love him and he appears to love Auburn. Auburn has thrown its support to him and he basically is doing at Auburn in basketball what Saban has done at Alabama in football. With the NIL stuff, Auburn is going to be around for a while and be a force to contend with.

AU probably has a better team than us this year. However, with our starting guards in the game, I think we beat them.
Looking forward to the Kansas game but we will need a really good effort to beat Miss St. They remind me of Auburn.
THEY DON'T HAVE A BETTER TEAM THAN US!!! They had a healthier team than we did. Did you not see what we did to them when we had both Washington and Wheeler on the floor? We were killing their guards. The game was looking a lot like the UT game. It was a track meet and they couldn't keep up.

Auburn looked good, talented and disciplined. But we looked better when we had our full squad out there.
one of their best players, I don't remember his name, didn't score his first basket until the second half.

He's a good coach. Top 10ish maybe? Top 15?

But he was down 9 when we were full strength. I think we were still ahead before Wheeler got knocked out of the game the 1st time. I'm not sure he outcoached us here as his team survived the attrition war.

He has the morals of a despicable person, but the guy can definitely coach.
A lot of coaches look good against Cal. Just think how many times Cal has been out-coached starting with the Wisconsin game 7 years ago. If the game is close late, Cal will find a way to blow it. That is the primary reason he has only one banner in 13 years at UK. He has had more than enough talent.

Not to change topic but since the talk is different coaches how about the new coach at Arizona. Don't know much about him other than former assistant from Gonzaga but I have watched Arizona play few games and he seems like a good coach. Not saying I want him to replace Cal and I know the PAC is not real strong.

If not for J Smith, I agree we are as talented. But that PF spot tips the talent to them. I said I thought we have won the game but for me, Smith is the best player on the floor and difference maker. Can’t wait to play them again on a neutral court

SEC is the toughest conference for a reason. We have solid coaches.

Pearl, Cal, Barnes, Oats, takes the tops spots.
then you have White (sometimes), Musselman, Davis, and Howland are also pretty good. You also have Frank Martin in that mix who can beat you.
Thank you for keeping Will Wade’s name out of there for reasons we agree on.

Pearl is 61 years old and only has a 60% winning percentage at Auburn.
Cliff Ellis had a 60% winning percentage at Auburn as well without cheating lol!

Pearl isn’t that great of a coach. He’s just a loudmouth that tricks people into thinking he’s a great coach.

We have our own coach like that at the moment and he has a better winning percentage and a lot more success.

I’m not a huge Cal fan but I promise Pearl would be a huge downgrade!
Pearl has been at it a long time and there’s a reason TN is the most tradition rich program he’s coached at when it comes to basketball.

Pearl‘s main goal is to win basketball games at Auburn.
Cal’s main goal is to get players drafted and if we win games along the way then great. If not no biggie.

If Cal got back to focusing on winning games first, I promise he would make Pearl and many others his whipping boy like he did his first 6 years on the job.

Yea he coached Kessler to run Wheeler right into that screen because they were getting killed. Phuck that dude. He’s a immoral, lying, cheating SOB. Mark my words, 5 years from now, he will be gone, program down there in shambles and on probation.
This is an odd take. Is it Walker's job to call out screens for UK's players? Shouldn't one of Wheeler's teammates have done that? This isn't the first time this year that's happened to him so it sounds like calling out screens is something Cal needs to work on going forward.

I’m assuming that you’re an Auburn fan that is also a basketball fan (i.e., not simply absently watching the games while biding your time waiting for football season). If so, I figure you’ve seen Pearl’s schtick long enough to get a pretty good perception of his coaching. And it at least sounds like you might think similar to what I’ve thought about Pearl – which is that he is a very good coach, but not for the same reasons many would attribute being a good coach to. For example, recruiting is definitely part of “coaching” at the collegiate level. As is evaluating players, managing and blending different talents, understanding game theory (e.g., cause and effect, as well as spotting inefficiencies in the way the game is being played by most at a particular time), etc.

So, when you say someone is a good coach that could and does mean different things to different people. To old school guys like me, I think we often associated that term with being good at Xs & Os. Pearl didn’t play the game. Obviously, that’s not disqualifying for being a good coach, but I do think it hurts in the Xs & Os department. In fact, I think Pearl is nearer to the bottom of the conference in that department. But so what? He is an excellent motivator – which I think is primarily why he is a very good coach.

I definitely got my eyes opened to the fact that simply going on “Xs & Os” is a way too narrow and naïve way to determine who is a “good coach.” By firsthand experience and then by watching Pitino at UK, I learned that a great motivator can often just wear out a better Xs & Os coach. And when that happens, who is really the better coach? I think being a good coach can just be broken down to simply winning basketball games, however you do it. And I think Pearl does it mostly through recruiting, personality and MOTIVATION.

Would I trade him for Calipari? No, but I can recognize he’s one of the top coaches in Div. I – despite the fact that, from what I’ve seen, he rarely (if ever) draws up a play during a game, especially not one based on what the opposing team is doing, or makes changes in the way his team plays. That’s my take anyway. Others may (and I’m sure would) differ.

The way he got ty ty to turn his ankle and got our guys to foul 3 different 3 pt shooters, brilliant.
Look Dick, two of those calls along with a few others were horseshit. But you celebrate your relevance, it might last you another month, then you crawl back down in the sewer where you belong. Be looking for your *** in Tampa. Til then, get your slimy *** off our board. Have to delouse the place all night. 🖕

I am a Uk fan. I was being sarcastic because the thread is about how great Pearl is. I was saying that if not for injuries and a few bad plays on our part, we win. Kind of saying that had as much to do with our loss as pearls brilliance. Make sense?

The better your players are, the better the coach looks. The more your program cheats, the better your players are.

What does it take to get fired BY TENNESSEE for cheating?

What kind of a man lets his own employee, an assistant coach who played and starred for the school, take the wrap and go to jail so he can get off with just a two game suspension and pretend like nothing happened?

That winning % stuff seems a little less important when he has the #1 ranked team in the country and the bet player in college basketball ? Maybe he's just a great recruiter and he's good when he has top 5 talent ? sound familiar ?

Okay Auburn fans (all ten of you). Your ‘Super Saturday of the Century’ is over. It’s almost Tuesday and we have another game coming up. You won, congratulations….. but it’s over now. You can go back to your ‘Boogs Board’ and talk about how handsome your players are and pray that the Vatican doesn’t come after Pearl to be the next Pope. Good luck to your players finding their uniforms they took off and waved around during that victory parade in the stands. Of course you don’t have to come to Rupp so hopefully we can do us and you guys can do you. Peace out.

Maybe you should address this memo towards all the UK fans still discussing Auburn? I only tend to respond to posts here when Auburn is being discussed.

Auburn has a known cheater for a coach. He has already been convicted by the NCAA. Enjoy.

I always find it odd when UK fans want to yell about cheating when Cal is the only coach who had to forfeit final 4s at multiple schools. Bruce got in trouble for stuff UT that is incredibly minor compared to KU, LSU, Arizona et al buying players. He was also punished pretty severely for it. The NCAA just ruled the issue with our assistant coach connecting players with an agent who was paying them to leave early wasn't nearly as big of a deal as many wanted to make it out to be. We self-imposed penalties and now it's over. We are certainly going to enjoy this season and the great program Bruce has built.

Cal has never been convicted of cheating by the NCAA but your buddy Bruce has. Also after the Tennessee episode he has an assistant at Auburn caught cheating. Not a good look.
