Stoops loses key players

Let me preface by saying I don’t like the comparison, either. But, 2019 was the example we should use to compare. Stoops lost Terry Wilson, his backup Sawyer Smith & the 3rd string QB, Nik Scalzo, was out for the year. That is the equivalent of having no PG. Except, Cal still had Mintz to rely on. He can play PG. Up until last night most of this board has praised Mintz for whatever reason & over inflated his importance & ability. But, all the sudden when Wheeler & TyTy go out those same ppl conveniently forget Mintz & we have nobody else who can possibly play PG, lol.

But, Stoops had to resort to playing a WR out of position to give his team a chance. The equivalent would be Cal having to play Brooks, Grady or Toppin at PG. And, he succeeded even though every defense we saw knew we couldn’t throw the ball & that we were the epitome of one dimensional offenses. But, even though they knew exactly what was coming we still managed 8 wins, including a bowl victory. Again, I don’t like the comparison bc there are way too many variables & differences. But, at least Cal had a guy who regularly gets minutes at PG. Stoops had a guy who had never played QB at the collegiate level & it happened in the middle of the season when he had zero time to prepare for anything. He did it on the fly in the best conference in the country.

Bowden was a QB in high school and one of the most versatile and athletic players in the past 20 years (at least) in college football.

Credit to Stoops for making it work but Lynn was a totally different breed.

As I’ve said a thousand time before. Bad calls are bad calls and I will always comment on them. Win or lose. Because the quality of officiating in this conference is a joke.
That'll show em! Keep fighting bro! I'm sure you'll affect some change!!

And, Mintz has played PG, at least part time, in college for what, 6 years now? I’m just saying that the excuse of having no PG doesn’t fly. At least Mintz has regularly played the position throughout his career. A LOT of posters here love Mintz & before the season some even said they could see him starting. But, I guess that changes when an excuse is needed.

FTR, I don’t expect teams to win without their starting back court. I just don’t like the mental gymnastics some ppl try to use to validate every game Cal loses. The same way I don’t like ppl trying to validate firing him after every loss. Personally, I’m ready to move on but it has more to do with how he runs the program than anything on-court.

I hear ya. For me, I didn't feel good about the game when Wheeler went out. If we were playing Georgia on the road, sure...but LSU, tough D already and ranked team, didn't get a feeling it would end well. Made it that much worse when TyTy cramped up.

Had LSU lost 2 players and we won last night ALL of you kool aid drinking sunshine pumpers would be talking about what a great win it was.

You wouldn’t even mention LSU losing 2 players.

Wrong.

Most here would acknowledge that LSU was short handed. ANY time a team plays us with an injury, most of us are very aware of it, and aware that the next match up might be different.

He thinks he's engaging in psychological warfare but all he's actually doing is getting himself put on more and more ignore lists.

Man, I felt the same & honestly, I know it was a tall order to get outta there with a win, all things considered. And, I probably wouldn’t have even commented if not for all of the excuses. And, last night’s excuses might even be legit. But, so many ppl bend over backwards to make excuse after excuse for every mistake Cal makes & the accumulated effect was my last straw, I guess, & compelled me to chime in, lol.

I hear ya. I think it is simply this...

Some folks blame everything on Cal when we lose and give him no credit when we win.

Some folks think Cal walks on water.

He doesn't walk on water and he rarely wins or loses games. Generally speaking it is poor play that loses a game and the brunt of that falls on players now just like it did 20, 30, 60 and 70 years ago. JMHO.

It's really just 2 or 3 posters who think Cal walks on water...

Here's the thing, you can blame Cal for many of our losses.. but last night wasn't on him. Injuries happen. It wasn't Huggins fault when De'sean Butler went out. So anyone trying to blame last night on Cal, as he scrambled to throw together a short handed back court, kind of tells me they are the posters who will ALWAYS blame Cal.

Maybe CAL should recruit a full roster of scholarship players so you can have a better chance to overcome injuries and bad play from starters

Very well said. That’s it in a nutshell, IMO.

I agree with this. When two players go down, it’s hard to win. Especially so when a lot of other things are going south too.

It's why I HATE the way we lost last night, clearly because of injuries.

IDK if Cal is our 5-10 year future "plan".. and had he lost that game on poor coaching, it would have been another example of a guy past his prime, and that maybe we need to move on.

.. but he didn't. His coaching has been refreshing (at least in trying to get Grady the ball and making the right roster changes).. But we lost because of injuries, and it further divides parts of the fanbase. I almost wish we did lose because of something Cal did.. but all yesterday told me was that we still have to wait and see.

Really? It has t happened often. But yes. We had one. Eddie Sutton. 13-19. 88-89 season
4 more than Cal got and he did not make 10 million a year. Also, majority of starting five left, what is Cal's excuse other than a piss poor Coach.

The last thing Cal should do is try and emulate Stoops. He only won 10 games this year. Cal can do better

Much easier to field a winning team in basketball unless your a snake oil salesman making 10 million a year.
There are literally 40 teams that can beat the #1 team in basketball on any given night. There is one or two teams in all of college football that has any chance at all of beating Georgia or Bama. Why do you think the #1 team in college basketball heading into the tournament has only about a thirty percent chance of winning it . You can't compare the two.

These are not really the best ads for UK fans. Which professional would you buy into who is so knowledgeable of football AND basketball that they could judge the better of two high level coaches
in different sports as well as all the needed knowledge as to player ability, support staff, community
viewpoint and expectations, and psychological, communication, skills and on and on and on! I would like to think I would keep my opinion to myself and not worry about what someone thinks of someone's skills compared to another's skills. And how many nurses are better in their position than a
Dr. good in their position? I hope they both are the best they can be, and they support one another
and their institution.

That is not the issue, it is a whole lot easier to put 5 people on the floor to produce a winning record than it is to put 22 people on a football team and have a winning record. The talking point was not about winning a Championship. Hell, Cal has a losing record against the top 25 for the last 5 or 6 years.

Then quit being a fan. Might help your health. Life is too short to worry about something over which you have no control.
I was a fan before Cal and will be a fan after he’s gone. He is helping me realize UK bb isn’t as important as it used to be.

This is why I don’t post often. Anybody who says anything against St. Calipari gets blown up. Keep drinking your Cal-aid, all the way to the NIT
Being hyperbolic is more the issue. I won't jump on intelligence like that poster but rationality is an open question.

The gnashing of teeth about this game is beyond reason and no one has to be granted sainthood to accept that.

Yes we would have noted LSU playing with out its starting backcourt we’re not as stupid as you show yourself to be every time you make a post
