Does anybody have a preserved page of the front page of the sports section of The Clarion-Ledger the day after State 6, Bama 3 in 1980?

A date to put on your calendar: On Sept. 23, we will host a 35-year anniversary of State 6, Bama 3. Reception, banquet, Bond, Cooks, Collins, Keys, etc., game highlights (with Jack's call). Gonna be a great night. Ticket info to come. The annual Kent Hull Golf Tournament is the next day at Live Oaks. Info on that coming shortly. Just wish Kent and Emory could be at both...

I have covered sports in Mississippi for half a century this fall. That would easily be one of the top three events I ever covered. Still unbelievable...

Friend and I took 14 tickets to the game (to sell for friends and such) and couldn`t sell a damn one to any State people so we gave our extra tickets to some kids selling programs outside the stadium. Truly a day I`ll never forget.

I don't know how often Bryant visited the opponent's locker room after a game, but as you pointed out in a thread from a few years back, he did that day.

Indeed, he did. Stood up on a metal folding chair with help from highway patrolmen, told State players they deserved to win. Whenever I talk to State players about the game, they talk as much about that as anything else that happened that day. Made it all the more special.

I know he did the day Southern Cal beat them in Birmingham with a black running back (Sam Cunningham). He had scheduled the game knowing Southern Cal would win and he announced the next day that Alabama would have black players the following year. Bear Bryant may have done as much to integrate the South as any one man.

Rick, you had a framed one at one point. You showed it to me in your car leaving Winona Rotary Club about 10 years ago. I tried to buy it from you! Wonder where it went?....

I had planned to go to the MSU-Bama game in 1980, but then I went up to Starkville and saw USM beat us 42-14, then to Tuscaloosa to see Bama beat USM 42-7. After that, I figured I didn't need to see the beatdown Bama was gonna put on us, so I stayed home that day. Doh!
