Interesting is one way to put it.

The 2016 season is still a little ways off for predictions, but Mississippi State is expected to be in or near the top 10 when this year's preseason AP poll is released.

Is that a talking point from someone on our end, or just a reporter in a hurry?

Anyone else notice that they 'just added home game with Tulane.' How can Tulane make more traveling to UMass than Starkville?

UMass had previously announced 2016 home games against UConn and, most recently, Tulane and Louisiana Tech, all at Gillette.

Meanwhile .. this looks rather ambitious ..

  • Sept. 3 at Florida
  • Sept. 10 vs. UConn (Gillette Stadium)
  • Sept. 17 at Boston College
  • Sept. 24 vs. Mississippi State (Gillette Stadium)
  • Oct. 1 vs. Tulane (Gillette Stadium)
  • Oct. 8 at Old Dominion
  • Oct. 15 vs. Louisiana Tech (Gillette Stadium)
  • Oct. 29 at Appalachian State
  • Nov. 5 at Troy
  • Nov. 19 at BYU
  • Nov. 26 at Hawaii

Interesting from fbschedules.com. Looks like our 2017 I-AA game is Charleston Southern. That'll make 3 years in a row for no SWAC schools.

I think they get a home game with Umass and with us they didn't. They be lucky to have 8000 at that game in 2016 and they just might beat Tulane.

Plus their AD made some statement about "not being afraid to schedule for success", I took that to mean, "MSU will kick the crap out of us, but we can probably beat UMASS"

That's exactly what he means. As much as it pissed me off, I honestly can't blame him. Playing a road game with a low payout and an almost certain loss isn't exactly "scheduling for success." A home-and-home with UMass is.

While I know that this has been discussed ad nauseam in other threads

the thing that continues to baffle me is that there was only a $350K buyout for this. I guess it all goes back to the fact that this thing was part of an agreement that dates back to 1998, but I would surely hope that future buyout amounts dwarf this number.

With only 6 home games next year that include South Alabama and Samford, SS is going to be in an extremely difficult spot. I would think that his options would either be to reduce season ticket price(not counting on it) which would cost him somewhere in the neighborhood of $2M or else accept that he's not going to be able to increase contribution amounts for next year. Either way, he's losing a whole lot more than $350K out of this deal.

The UMass buyout is $1 million.
I think that's too low. Especially for the 2020 game. For all the hell we give Templeton (most of it deserved), at the time the Tulane contract was signed, $350K was probably a pretty reasonable buyout. Should have some clause in the buyouts tying the amount to the cost of replacing the game with a comparable team at the time, or the cost of losing a home game if no replacement can be found.
