Duke got everyone pumped up yesterday then dropped us like hot rock. Board was alive, everyone excited, and then Boom Lively is choosing Duke. Go figure. Kind of a stupid move if we still get Bona. UCLA board lighting up with post that Bona is going to give us a big boner. Some posting he verbally committed to Cronin yesterday. Hopefully, Cal can change his mind. Damn screwed again by Rat Face.

If it is true, what a brilliant chess play by Duke. Cal and the Cats have some serious momentum, but another head to head L at the hands of the devils, for a top tier prospect when they already have a 5 on board is a significant buzz kill.

I want to see how cal counters - that’s the true tell if we’re ‘back’ or not imo.

This is the type of move that the national media would reserve for a guy like John Calipari.. despite the fact that he's never done such a thing, and Coach K has done it numerous times. That's my issue. Good move or not, debatable (I think it's bush league).. but why Coach K is allowed to get away with this stuff, is the issue. Thankfully, his involvment with college basketball is quickly fading, and will be absolutely zilch before long... And I'll toast to that.

Seriously. I don’t know where people get this ****. “Chess play.” Give me a break.
It’s some form of Marketing move to temper the competition’s recruiting momentum.

Chess move, marketing ploy, act of god… whatever it is - if it’s Duke - that’s stellar timing to mitigate what Cal and the cats have working.

I hope it’s Cal and the cats, that’d be pretty badass to counteract any Duke Hope at all. If Cal has Adem commit directly after Lively goes elsewhere, that’s the same Type of marketing move to bring UK back into the forefront.

That’s just my .02

It's more sour grapes than some sort of "chess move". It's not like Coach K did something tactical to secure a recruit. He's just upset that another coach is getting buzz and moved a recruit up in his decision... a recruit who wanted to wait to see what the rosters were like in the spring.. out of pettiness.

Coach K is gone next year. It didn't really matter what sort of momentum Coach Cal had because Coach K was going to be likely going to be on the couch. Plus, while momentum is nice, and it can help.. it's not like we directly use this to sign someone, it's just media buzz.

It's literally a child, at another kids birthday party, having a meltdown because the attention isn't on him..

If you don’t let duke live in your head you will be much happier.

Did Lively pick Duke already and it didn’t even get its own thread?

Or is this whole thread based on panic because Branham logged one crystal ball pick he himself said was just a hunch?

If it’s #2 then it’s a sackless move not waiting one more day to have this conversation.

Exactly.

My theory:

Duke usually backs off if they know they can’t get a recruit. Cal doesn’t.

So Duke rarely loses recruiting battles because if it doesn’t look like they can win, they back off to save face. They have to protect their image.

Cal doesn’t care, he will fight it out until the end even if it means looking foolish.

Why would Duke not try to get Sharpe? They knew he was a UK lock, so they didn’t bother. Meanwhile, Cal knew Filipowski was a Duke lock, but offered anyway.

Just a difference in recruiting philosophy.

On the surface, it looks bad for Cal/UK and makes Duke look good.

who cares, duke is on its last leg. They have 1 to 3 years of solid relevancy left based on recruiting k’s legacy. In 4-7 years we’ll start to see the real effects, especially after he eventually passes and the susan rice/Biden relationship wears off. I’d say 2028 will be when college basketball can see where duke will settle and hopefully it’s just middle of the road in the acc.

"They didn't want him"
Remember the kid that always talked about how good they were and then when it was recess they wouldn’t play you one on one because their arm was hurt or they had a cold or some lame excuse? That’s Duke in recruiting. Only play when you can guarantee a win. Smart philosophy, but a tad bit cowardly.

Schools (including Duke) definitely like to appear to "beat" Cal for a recruit. He's thought of as the games best recruiter (not as much lately) so it's advantageous for coaches to try to look like they out recruited him for a player. Duke definitely has a habit of it.

This would hurt a lot more if we just didn’t snatch the #1 and #5 prospects. Lively’s upside is tantalizing but he doesn’t make or break next year’s team. Let him go to Duke and try to co-exist with the other big they just signed. That’s an awkward fit in the modern NBA, much less college basketball.
