After re watching their run in the tournament I really think this was Cals best coaching job, and makes me more optimistic about this season!
This team only went six deep! And we had Josh Harrellson playing the 5, whom only played like 80 minutes total the year before!! AND we knocked off the 5 seed, the number 1 OVERAL seed OSU, and the 2 UNC to get revenge from the regular season loss.
So my point is, if THAT team could get to a Final 4, so can this team!! (Btw I forgot how good Knight was.)

This team can be more talented. 2010-11 was talented yes, but was only ranked top 10 4 weeks throughout the season, and drew a 4 seed. That's easily obtainable.
The talent is not on the same level, IMHO. Knight was a top 5 player out of HS, and a lottery pick. Jones was top 10-15 range and a first rounder. Lamb was one of the best shooters in school history. Miller and Liggins were high 4-stars.

While this team does not have as much talent, it has more experience and depth.

If they mesh and everyone accepts their roles, then they could end the season on a run like ‘11 made. But that is asking a lot.

As good as the veterans are, they haven’t played together. Actually having an offseason will help with chemistry and cohesion, though.

I’m thinking Sweet Sixteen with the potential for a Final Four run, but also the possibility of a 1st round flame out.

Holy revisionist history.

All they had to do was stay out of foul trouble. Nobody was looking over each other’s shoulders. Nobody got pulled for a mistake prematurely because there was no one to replace them. I think it helped them relax and just play and learn. Knight/Lamb might be Cal’s most underrated backcourt. They were lethal. And Liggins found some magic after nearly being kicked off the team.

Long felt that year was Cal's best coaching job at UK. They were pretty bad in stretches that year, especially on the road in the SEC, but they strted to click in the SECT.
Cal pick and rolled teams to death with Knight. They just competed so hard and had to play hard without fouling.

Watch the end of the Ohio State game from that season. Knight made the big shot, but Liggins ran the show down the stretch. Having multiple quality players with the skill to run point in a pinch is so valuable. It was a big reason why we were so successful in those 2011 and 2012 seasons.

His defense was pretty good too. Long and lanky.

Most interesting thing about that team is how Cal's insistence on a short, tight rotation actually turned out to really make that team what it was in the end.

Sometimes Cal's hardheadedness about the bench is a negative. But with that bunch what seemed to happen was that by March, everybody accepted his role--particularly Harrellson. Having a couple of other guys in the rotation would have just complicated the thing IMO.

Never has the pick and roll been run better in the Cal era. Usually it looks like Cal doesn't even really know how to coach it (and to be fair a lot of college teams struggle with it because it's harder than it looks). That team got it down like a science and then the whole thing took off.

As for the question about their talent, I don't think they were super talented to be honest. Definitely on the lower end of Cal's really good teams. They were a true team however and more importantly, they could really shoot the ball. Shooting counters virtually everything in this sport.

Lol ok
Experienced talent outweighs freshman Everytime.
Agreed.

As I said, this team doesn’t have the talent that team had, but it has more experience.

If they come together, this team could make a nice run, but I wouldn’t lump them in with a Final Four team just yet.

I remember Cal squeezing the clock at the end of the Kansas game, but we pulled it out.
