Bad news coming today?

Who needs juniors anyway. We are just fine with one year and occasionally two year guys....
If it's KB leaving, it's EJ Montgomery part 2. Just ridiculous stuff really.

Sorry. I like the kid. But Keion Brooks leaving is not bad news. He's the odd man out and Cal needs to be pretty blunt and ruthless in shaping this team's roster for next year.
How do I figure?
1. He's clearly behind Oscar, Daimion Collins and Toppin as a front court player.
2. He's shown a very limited capacity to score.
3. It increases, at least slightly, the chance that Isiah Jackson is returning: Maybe KB knows something.
4. I would be ready to give Hopkins every opportunity at the 3/4 ahead of KB. I know we're not counting on freshmen after last year, but he has looked promising.
5. Kentucky is still linked to guys like Kessler and others who would further bury KB on the bench.
How do I figure?

All the rumors of Brooks to IU are legit. Don't know if that's what it is but that would be my guess.
I’d say it’s Brooks transferring. I just don’t see him coming back to UK. He’s gonna have serious comp from Collins, Toppin and Hopkins. TBH all 3 guys offer more than Brooks. Obviously Brooks has experience over the two Frosh but Toppin is Bigger Stronger and has better form to develop into a solid shooter.
I don't know who it is but can I be the first to say he sucks,we didn't need him and Cal will get someone better.
No idea if Hopkins offers more than Brooks. Remember, Brooks came in as a highly-coveted recruit. Let's not play those games anymore.
See, I can't get on board with this. This is the kind of stuff we read year after year when guys leave.

That #3 is what I'm talking about. There is no way, as a freshman, Hopkins is going to come in more ready to contribute than a junior Brooks would. There's just no way.
Every year we spin all these guys leaving into "it's not a loss, we have better stuff coming in." We need continuity period. Guys leaving that would give us continuity IS bad news. Always has been.
Yep. Haven't we learned to pump the breaks on incoming Freshman hype/expectations??
Not trying to argue and not trying to prove any points...just wanna ask a simple question...no strings attached or no secret wording but you got one player to choose for next year....KB or Toppin...who ya got?
Aaaaaa-men. I can't believe after the last few years we still have people making comments like "we don't need that guy back because we have this guy coming in." I'd be tired of wiping the egg off my face by now.
You're not wrong, but between the guy sounding off on Rupp, leading the charge to kneel for no reason, and making it known how unhappy he was at UK, it's not exactly heartbreaking to see the guy go.
My rebuttal to that is why do I have to choose? There's plenty of room on the roster for both.
I'm serious, man. We're talking about a roster that NEVER uses all 13 scholarships. Why do I have to choose between Toppin and Brooks? Makes no sense to me.
I actually think Toppin can play the 3 a little, so there is room for both.
There's a reason why TJ failed at KSR, and is now doing one of the worst sports shows of all time, KRC.

This is spot on. Plain and simple Brooks will be better than anybody we bring in. Hes also better than Toppin or anybody that can play the 4 on our roster. If he had a normal offseason and didn't get hurt early in the year he would have been a much different player this year.
Ha, dang man. I'm far from trying to act like a little kid here. I never suspected you had some secret meaning. I don't know if I understand the "who would you choose between these two guys" question. It's a 13 man roster.
Could part of it be football related with Gavin Wimsatt?

I dont want to see him leave either and agree with you about players returning. But lots of teams are losing guys now not just us. Chances are based on the quotes from Brooks dad that if he wasn't draftable he comes back. Well if KB leaves it most likely means there is a reason that wasn't known a week or two ago. Hopkins and Collins have been signed for a while so it most likely means someone else is coming in. Someone who is a threat to KB. So maybe we are getting a surprise return or a transfer who is markedly better than KB.
Cal’s roster turnover is just mind boggling. Even before transfer leniency, he lost building blocks for subsequent years.
No matter who he brings in to replace the ones leaving, he isn’t building anything, not improving the culture, and not assuring better success down the road. It’s an all in, put your chips in the middle of the table and roll the dice and HOPE it pays off approach. Hope-that’s our new strategy!!

So that's kind of where we are now. One guy leaves, and we sit here going "well maybe someone better is coming in to replace him???" Maybe, maybe not.
IDK, how do the other 348 D1 programs handle those situations? Why are they getting their players back?
Not only do we lose two duds, Jackson and two transfers, we can't even hang on to Brooks and Mintz?
Also, Mintz making 6 figures… ..where?
I've said it for months, Mintz should be Cal's most Important recruit, he can't let him and Brooks slip away, if he does, he hasn't learned a damn thing.

I think we have NO idea what we have in Hopkins right now especially. Some of you guys are throwing his name around like he could step in and be just as impactful as Brooks. What you're probably going to see is a guy that was as ready to step in and be impactful as a Lance Ware or Cam Fletcher. We do not need to be pinning our hopes on guys like this anymore. They aren't ready.
This is not meant to be personal...just an observation in general. I read a lot of comments along the line of "His dad said..." Now be honest, if you were asked if your son planned to come back if he wasn't looking good for the NBA, would you say anything other than... "Oh yes, he is blue thru and thru!"?
I mean what father would say, "Well, you know he was raised in Indiana, and is friends with Jackson-Davis, so maybe he'll consider going there"?
So, let's not put any stock into what a parent says.
Well to my point lots of teams are losing these transfers and will have to learn to deal with not having pieces they expected to have. Your being a realist based on our recent past of losing guys we have no business losing which was bad before the new transfer rule. It is just as realistic to assume that a player who seemed content based on comments from his dad has new information that has changed that. I still would like to see Brooks stay and maybe he does but of he leaves this transfer thing is not just a UK thing like the going pro when they shouldn't it's a nationwide thing and the good news with that is we are accustomed to it and maybe it levels the playing field a little
I love Mintz and his return would make me happier than anyone else. That being said ... he probably has a better chance at making 6 figures outside of basketball than in it.

Something is very wrong when you cannot keep a team together - especially when there are limited options for those leaving. Basically leaving says "I'd rather try something completely unknown than stick with what I know". Not to stir the pot - but Askew was "locked in" before he wasn't.... so IMO could be ANYBODY.
Either more departure(s) or Cal and Ellen are leaving to take over and dominate the world of brownies. Watch out Little Debbie - they comin' fo you!

Are they also dealing with 3 guys going to the NBA after their freshman season in addition to the transfers?
Just because other teams are dealing with the new transfer rules, doesn't make this any better for us.
