Cal either has to give up a million dollars a year for life, after he's done making 9 million a year to coach, or Texas has to match that monster contract for a 62 year old coach who isn't the hot name he was a decade ago when he was signing 3 top 10 kids per class.

Maybe they will or maybe he takes a pay cut to get out of here, but IMO that's a huge hurdle that has to be crossed on both sides.
We need to clear up the fact that there is no million dollars a year for life deal. I don’t know how that started, but it’s not true. His contract expires in 2029, whether it is as the head coach or as the Special Assistant to the AD. There is no $1 million dollars for life.

I’m ready for Cal to move on. His best years are behind him. But I can’t see another program matching what hes making here coming off the worst season of his career and a now 6 year stretch that’s been far from his best.
If you knew how stupid you looked for saying that you wouldn't say it.
In those six years we've had three of our best teams. Three teams that any school in the country would proudly take. 17,19,20

Those three years were just as good or better than anything he accomplished at Memphis and Kentucky hired him

delusional.
Delusional in that UK facilities are the best, or that UK is in the top ten? I have been to the practice facilities and I think they are great but I have not seen the facilities at other schools.

It’s embarrassing that a hall of fame coach would leave UK to take a job like Texas. Now some on here will get their wish and let’s see all the coaches that turn this job down and we will end up with Billy Gillespie type minus the alcohol lol

I bet Cal is more tired of this gig than we think. All we hear is how the fanbase has had it with him, but we've never asked the question if Cal is feeling the same way about the fanbase.

Texas is one of the few schools with the resources that we have, right?

It would be a good shake up for him. Wash his hands clean of the last few seasons, the kneeling stuff, etc.

But if he left, I imagine we have about 8 transfers about to come up lol.
I agree that we will probably lose our recruits and , with the current state of the portal, possibly the remainder of our roster. Oscar and Collins would probably go over well in Texas. I do not think Cal thinks about the kneeling. He thought it was the right thing to do once, it is done, and he moved on. I hope he stays but this is an opportunity that ,I think , he has to look at.

If he leaves then we won't have a team. They come here because of him and the OAD mentality.
This is going to happen no matter when he leaves. I have said this for years that this was my main concern with Cal. His current approach is going to leave the program in a bad spot for the next coach if Cal doesn't alter his approach. I have been called a "Chicken Little" for years for saying this. Yet here we sit.

Not sure if you’re serious, but why would he do that?
I know that some on this board snarl when they talk about the money Cal makes. The salary is high for a reason.
If a school like Texas calls, believe me, salary will not be an issue. Outside of basketball, he will make double (?) maybe more, to what he makes here. The opportunities in the Austin area, in Texas as a whole, and from the Longhorn network will make it easy to pay him much more than he gets here. I sure hope he decides to stay right here. If he does not, I will thank him for a job well done and wish him well.

Agree with what you wrote. BUT, if Cal bails after the debacle of this past year and the depleted roster he would leave, the fanbase would never forgive him. His UK legacy would be forever tarnished. Not sure he gives two ***** about anything but Cal though. He would make Pitino look like a stand up guy. At least Pitino left the program in good shape, unlike what Cal would be doing.

Cal could absolutely care less what shape he leaves this program in. Especially if he leaves it to coach at another university.

U know it's true
Those 3 are better than any 3 duke has in that time. Kansas, or anyone else except villanova
Duke has struggled too. Their fans are also disgruntled and questioning whether or not it’s time for coach K to retire. And he has 5 titles and has been the unquestioned best coach in the modern era.

currently, I’m talking like last 5 years or so, I’d rate the top programs as Villanova, Gonzaga, Virginia, Michigan, and Kansas. All of them have at least a final four during that span. Two of them have titles. None of them have missed the tournament. Michigan has 4 straight s16’s or better. Kansas has been a 1 seed 3 times and would have been 4 if last years tourney hadn’t been cancelled. Nova, 2 titles. Virginia, a title and complete dominance of the best conference in the country. Gonzaga 3 1 seeds, a runner up, and a solid chance to go undefeated.

I’m not saying we’ve been horrible. I think we’re basically 6a to Duke 6b.

But Cal is making 9 million a year with a 52.5 million dollar buyout currently. Idk. Maybe I’m overestimating how much money that is to a college like Texas athletic department.

It would be a disaster. We will lose our recruits...Jai Lucas, etc.

Whoever wants Cal gone, fine. But this would be an epic disaster for it to happen coming off last year.

There is no buyout for Cal leaving voluntarily. No payment to UK if I understand the contract. I think this is a main reason people felt the contract was terrible. Far too one sided.

Uk was well on its way to having 3 elite 8's or better last season. Lol gonzaga has done less . Since when does 1 seed count for anything? You're out of your mind. 1 final 4

I think what you are wanting is reg season only. Kansas has not done 1 thing. Virginia the only top seed to be beat by 16 smh

You can bet the players he recruited will leave with him but there will be plenty of Kentucky kids needing a scholarship so the roster won’t be depleted .

You may be right but to be honest, the transfer portal is changing the landscape of college basketball so much, I am not sure if there will ever be a good time for any coach to leave on his own. When a coach leaves, some or most of the players will as well. The players are leaving in droves all over the country now and their coaches are staying in place. More transfer announcements everyday.

One would have to think bringing in a high level coach would at least yield more wins than we had this season. Sure players would leave but some good players would come in also.

If UK is going to lose their recruits this would be a good year for it.

9-16 was an epic disaster and Cal was here. 4 players are already gone from that team. Possible that more will. Whenever Cal leaves it will affect recruits this year or next year.
Being held hostage for a coach does not usually end well.

I've said/thought exactly the same thing for a number of years. If I was a coach approached by UK after Cal left/retired, there's no way I would take the job. I could see where there would be no players in the cupboard. 2,3,4 go NBA, a transfer or two, and the new coach is left with some walk-ons and a player or two that got few minutes on the court.

That contract matches some of the worst pro contracts in history in terms of utter ridiculousness.

I think the Mets are paying Bobby Bonilla until 2035. 😅

Our pattern in recent history has been:

Successful Coach (Hall)

Drunk (Sutton)

Successful Coach (Pitino)

Drunk (Gillispie)

Successful Coach (Cal)

Drunk (any guesses?)
