Yes.

And it’s worth noting that I and probably a whole hell of a lot of other people abstained from voting in that poll because:

—We’re not ready to say carte blanc we’re already completely done with Cal
—We think he deserves one more season to turn things around or at least make some serious progress towards turning things around (real progress, not another Elite Eight team that bolts and leaves the stable empty)
—Believes he deserves that chance but don’t really see much of any way he actually pulls it off.....

If the UCLA rumors are true, then the buyout is what was needed to retain Cal without matching the 10 mil/yr. In fact, unless the contract is amended, Cal will never earn 10 mil/yr at UK.

Looking back now, it appears the real winners were UCLA and John Calipari. Of course, he stood to win big either way. But, I seriously doubt UCLA would have come knocking with the supposed $10 million per year offer following a season like UK just went through. And I doubt UK would have offered the "lifetime contract" after this season either.
UCLA ended up with Cronin for much less than they'd been willing to pay Calipari and even though their regular season was pretty average, here they are in the Sweet 16.
Meanwhile, Calipari wins the lottery with a huge pile of money and ironclad deal designed solely to give him a secure future. All while his latest team with a #1 recruiting class, goes 9-16.
The old saying "timing is everything" couldn't be more applicable.

I think there might be a significant disparity (generally) in Texas talent versus Kentucky. Lots of high level hoops players come from Texas. Kentucky not so much. Of course, a big piece of that is population difference but the difference exists nonetheless.

You could not pay me enough money to put up with this unrealistic, narrcistic fanbase. In fact if I were him, I'd go ahead & have as bad a season as possible next year & commit some violations while I was at it. Then retire & laugh.

I suppose I agree. Dep what would you call a successful season for Cal to stay? I say 25-30 wins and no less than elite 8.

You are correct in your contract info. He does not get $1 million every year for life like many on here post. It’s a 10 year contract that expires in 2029 whether he is still coaching or has moved into the administrative role.

I'm looking at the overall picture more than just the W/L record next year.

I want to see if he does adjust his style of play and recruiting philosophy like he said he would.

I have my doubts, but if he does, there is no reason he can't have us back contending for titles again in the very near future.

If it is the same uninspired dribble drive offense that doesn't emphasize threes and is coupled with kids who have no business leaving going pro again, well . . .

While you are dissing the fans, you won't ever have to worry about someone trying to pay you enough. So if that is your only worry, you really don't have any worries.

The bigger question is would Cal's big ego allow him to play second fiddle to football?

I can't see Cal taking a back seat to anyone when there is a microphone involved.

Money is no object with Cal so why do you think he stays at UK.

They don't call him King Cal for no reason.

He would just be little ole Cal at Texas.
