Cal deserves zero pass for the way he handled Boston and Askew this season while we lost game after game after game. He wouldn’t even as much as try Mintz as the point or give Allen extended minutes.

Also, he gets no pass for making Allen his whipping boy in his press conferences, just because he was mad at the fanbase. He made an absolute *** of himself this year. He deserves every ounce of criticism he’s getting. Every single ounce.
I'm not saying he doesn't deserve criticism. He clearly does. I won't excuse anything you just said. The only thing I'm saying is that it is unhelpful and unproductive to simply continue demanding the man be fired when he's clearly not going to be fired. Instead, we should be discussing ways for Calipari to fix what is broken. He has admitted things are broken. He can't deny things must change. He has said things must change.

Oh they must change. He has to get away from this AAU type of atmosphere and back to a team oriented, family oriented atmosphere. He needs to value shooting over athleticism and experience over talent.

This board is now nothing more than an echo chamber of ignorance and intolerance. There are a few people who try to have good conversations, but they get drowned out by the ones who just have the need to be seen and heard because in the real world no one pays them any attention.

Then you have people like me who love piss them off more than they already are. But at least my intentions are well.

Word vomit.

Help me here, as I frankly don't recall, but was Tubby often dismissive of the fan base, even to the point of mocking them?
Gotta give Tubby props... for all his faults, he always treated the fans respectfully.

And, in retrospect, he was criticized much, MUCH more harshly than Cal (although he deserved most of it. Haha.)

You said...
"This post conveys a similar message that Cal often delivers to the fan base: insult those who have a different take, and then expect them to agree with you because.......well because, they are of inferior intelligence.

Thanks for chuckle.....good one!"

So, your accusation is that I am accusing people who differ with me of having low intelligence. That is not the case. The reason they "appear" to be of low intelligence is because they are demanding Calipari be fired when it is clearly not reasonable. As I said above, there is a myriad of reasons why it is not happening. But what you've done here is decide to accuse me of insulting people rather than actually engaging in a conversation about why Cal should or shouldn't be fired today. We could talk about that if you like. I'd be happy to engage in more than one-liners, even.

I wouldn't characterize it as an accusation, I would say that I saw similarities between the message you conveyed to those who see things differently than yourself, and the message Cal sometimes conveys to the fan base.

"Don't let me interrupt the dart throwing here, though. By all means, the intelligence displayed in this thread, and on this board, is truly breathtaking."

I read that as being somewhat dismissive, insulting even, of those who may not hold the same viewpoint.

It may be my reading comprehension that is lacking here. If you say that I mistook what you meant with with those two sentences that I've quoted herewithin, then I'll accept that I did. I make mistakes all the time.

I have a question if you care to give your opinion.....do you see any possible way out of this mess? I only see two options.

1) Dominate recruiting again. Get the best of the best every year. Guys that actually are worthy of one and done. Guys like Wall, Boogie, KAT, AD, Murray and many more. I can't see this happening since Cal has not gotten these guys in a while, but more importantly, they aren't going to be available now as the cream of the crop will all go to the G league.

2) Change the one and done style of recruiting. I honestly think Cal would change this if he could. Every guy that comes in now either heads to the NBA after a year (whether ready or not) or feels they have to transfer as they are going to get recruited over. I'm not sure how we keep people like Johnny Juzang going forward. I think kids with NBA aspirations are afraid they are viewed as a failure if they can't do it in a year at UK. The multi year guys either don't come or they leave.

I'd love to see something change but I just don't know how you can change recruits'/players' line of thinking with Cal at UK. I'm not sure this is fixable with the current landscape in college basketball.
Great post bowfreak.
There is a way out of this mess. The short term fix for this particular team begins with retaining several of these players and working with them this offseason to prepare to be a better team in 2021-22. I believe we will see a good number of these players return. Losing Boston and Clarke may not be such a bad thing.

Retain players... There is no question in my mind, the guys this team needed were Johnny Juzang, Jermarl Baker, Ashton Hagans, and EJ Montgomery. It wasn't so much the guys who left with legitimate NBA offers awaiting. It was the guys who left to transfer or with no real NBA prospects. If Cal could keep those guys, the full roster turnover wouldn't keep happening. Now, I don't know what is being said behind closed doors- if Cal is pushing these guys out the door or if the mind-set of returning to UK for another season is seen as a failure- or if they are being recruited over and just want out. Whatever is happening needs to change.

New philosophy: it is better to return players who may not have had a great season (known commodities) than to take a bunch of new guys and transfers of similar talent who will be starting from scratch at this school, with this staff, and playing with each other. A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

I think that as a long term philosophy would completely change the direction of the program. It might mean we miss out on some freshmen recruits, but the wholesale rebuild every year just can't keep happening. I really do think that would fix the whole thing.

He can still go out and try to recruit the best players every season, even guys who could potentially leave after a year, but he's got to keep the other guys around to have some continuity and some experience entering the next season.

And by the way, I think Calipari sees this- he just mentioned that the game is changing and recruiting is changing in his final Monday call-in show. I hope we see changes.

And listen folks, I get irritated at many of you, but I understand the frustration. I've been very frustrated this season. I fume when I see Juzang winning the game for UCLA when I know he should still be at UK. That's the guy we needed on the wing at small forward. And I also know that, though Calipari isn't going anywhere right now, if something doesn't change, his time is coming. I don't think he wants to go out that way, so I fully expect he's working his butt off to fix this thing right now.

I'm assuming every coach that isn't in the tournament right now, is scrambling to see who might be transferring FROM their program, while communicating the guys who ARE transferring from other programs.

Is it also not possible that Cal knows how bad this year is? And knows talking about draft night isn't a wise move.. Knows to probably keep quiet for a bit?

I just don't know why some assume Cal is just OK with this year and winning 9 games. Don't you think he's doing some serious work, trying to fix this from several angles? Because if he's not, if all he really cares about is draft night and woke movements, he won't be employed much longer. I don't care about the buyout, he puts up another stinker of a year and he's gone. I imagine he knows that.

Well DaytonKat, yes, it was a bit dismissive and insulting. But what am I looking at in nearly every thread on this board? I'm looking at posts constantly demeaning and insulting the coach of our team with no legitimate answer other than "wanting him gone." It doesn't make my dismissive and insulting comment right, but honestly it's like fighting fire with fire. Should the guy throwing rocks be upset when someone throws a rock back? You want me to play nice but you don't hold others to the same standard. Sure, I can play nice. I usually do. I can be reasonable.

Cal doesn’t need to be on air talking about anything. He needs to convince guys to come back who need to, identify real impact transfers to add to the roster. Then hire Jaden Hardy’s dad/uncle/whoever and get him on campus. That would be a start to trying to fix the mess we are in.

That's something else kind of funny. I don't recall Cal being too heavy on the "draft night" talk like he used to be. I mean, he's really said nothing about the pro-days and how excited he is for these guys to pursue their NBA dreams (in fairness, he hasn't had much luck on draft night lately lol).

So here we are, with posters who are surprised/confused to not hear from Cal and his usual stances he's had for the last decade. Really? Because I'm not surprised at all he's backed down away from several of the things posters hated about him. His model isn't working, for reasons that are in, and out of his control.

If I had to bet on this, I think Cal sees this exactly as we all do. His draft-day mindset, his bench strategy, his preferences of 5*'s over 4*s.. I think he sees all of it needs to be changed. IDK if he can fix it, I certainly have doubts if he can fix it in one year. But I think we jumped the gun a bit, assuming this guy won't change a thing. I think his silence but be telling us otherwise. Or, maybe it won't. Just don't think anyone can firmly say they have the answer.

The analogy is more people are throwing rocks at Cal, who actually has asked rocks be thrown at him and is paid well for it. Then you throw rocks (insults) at everyone in the thread and the board, not just specific posters. Now you may have only meant specific posters saying specific things, but your phrasing was general enough to insult anyone.

I’ve pointed this out to you before, maybe stop insulting peoples intelligence on the board because you disagree with them. You’d probably say that’s other people’s problem, but truly it’s yours and very immature behavior from a mod to repeatedly be throwing insults and “fighting fire with fire”.

Tubby got his big payday and then settled into deep mediocrity. He and Cal are similar in that both are stubborn to an absolute fault.

I do not believe Cal will change, I don't think his ego would ever allow for it.

Wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Cal say or do something which would give UK just cause to wiggle out of the hideous contract Barnhart drew up.
Well you could be right CatPhight. For Cal's sake, I hope you're wrong. There is actually evidence to suggest that Calipari is more open open to changing than Tubby ever was. Cal has changed schemes and philosophies for different teams and personnel many times. He even ran a press last season and he hates that. He was dribble drive when he was at Memphis and has run more of a traditional post offense most of the time at UK. I don't believe Tubby changed anything from the time he was at Georgia until he left Memphis. That ball line defense was a staple and it never went away. His offense (which was always his weakness, in my opinion) never changed. So, there is more hope for Calipari in my opinion. I will not disagree with you about Cal's ego and stubbornness, especially mid-season. He isn't going to give an inch in interviews with the media or with call-in questions from fans, in the middle of seasons. But I heard something in that last call-in show that gave me some hope for change. He had done some self-reflection it seems and had come to the conclusion that changes had to be made. I think we all agree with that.

But I will agree with you on one thing CatPhight. If something doesn't change, he won't be here much longer. If we have another season like this debacle, the calls for his ouster will no longer be considered far fetched and unreasonable. Next season needs to be MUCH better. Someone posted a thread asking what kind of improvement will it take to make you feel better about the direction of the program, well it will take a serious improvement for most people I'd say. I'm expecting a significant improvement. I want to see us back in the national title conversation again. That's what Cal said he expected from the beginning. That's what I expect.

If we could stop hating on the man for 5 seconds and give him some small benefit of the doubt (no longer possible here, I know), we would all likely speculate what he's been busy doing. After the worst season in his own history as a coach and UK, he is likely working harder than ever before to correct the debacle that just happened, whatever it may take. Don't let me interrupt the dart throwing here, though. By all means, the intelligence displayed in this thread, and on this board, is truly breathtaking. 🙄

Honestly I’m with you on the “give him a break” thought. He’s done enough to deserve a trash season.

That said, he’s gotta be willing to adjust, upgrade the staff, and get better.

The thing that made things even worse than losing, though, are some of the comments and political stuff he hopped into this year. There was no need to clap at the fans after jamming a political ideology down our throats that he knows we don’t subscribe to.

This perception, or understanding as far as potential 5 star recruits goes, may never go away as long as Cal is here due to the constant branding Cal has done since he got here. If we don't overcome this, we might continue to lose 5 stars that shouldn't go and multi-year players that don't want to get recruited over. Not trying to be negative but the time it could take to get beyond this label (3+ years?) may be more time than Cal has.

And yes, if you think Cal should be fired today, you're either not very intelligent or just not thinking. Shall I list the reasons why that won't happen? It's just not a smart argument at all. He shouldn't be fired today. He should be expected to fix what is obviously broken. If he doesn't fix it, then at some point in the future your solution becomes viable.

You may be right Ole Poop. If so, his time at UK is coming to an end. The top guys are going straight to league now. He's not going to be able to get enough of the rest to be able to start over from scratch every year and have success. It's got to change. And that's why I think Calipari will make that change. The pitch has to change. Yes, he can still help you get to the NBA and reach your dreams, but you can't expect that to happen overnight anymore. If you're that good, you're already gone. If you're not, maybe your time will come, but let's work on it together. Something's got to give.

The thing is you’re not offering a critique, you’re insulting as you yourself admitted. Big difference.

If you can’t understand why insulting people is non-productive and immature, regardless of your justifications and who insulted someone else first, maybe you should renounce your position as mod and transition gracefully into troll.

Now I’m not saying insulting people makes you a troll, I’ve said immature things here myself and try to learn better. But not being able to say “my bad” and continuing the behavior makes me question if you’re even worth talking to. You’ll probably just insult my intelligence if I ever make a counterpoint that touches a nerve.

I’d rather Cal be quite right now as opposed to having his face all over the media. I would have to think he is going through some self reflection now that season is over. I’ve said it before, but this is going be a very closely watched offseason from BBN. I think Cal realizes that actions are going speak louder than words right now, or so I hope as a fan.

You are way out of line with Ill but he's a man.

I have serious issues with Cal. The first; kneeling and the second kneeling with his team. (Toss out the politics) The character of Cal should be as it has been which is promoting his players first mentality and basketball. (Cal hid his tendencies for the most part before that incident happened. (It does not matter what anyone states, Cal hid his personal tendencies previously though most knew where he was coming from.)

That move was as counterproductive as any move I have seen in the sports environment (I know, other teams and coaches have "done" it.) What happened was, Cal lost his authority of this team at that moment! (Debate the rights and wrongs of it all you want either for, or against it.) This teams first focus was no longer basketball, it was something less AND, the coach was not calling the shots any longer. That is not good enough to win. (Debate how, when, where or why in some other forum.) Cal made a HUGE mistake I am not sure he can overcome. Call it my opinion or whatever you wish, I will not debate.

I still state it will take Cal somehow, un-kneeling to right this mess. (I hope he can.)(Maybe it will take an entirely new team to remove that huge blunder.) He has to regain authority and that will be his biggest challenge to date. I hope he can...

This is as much as I have posted in any regular forum in a long while. I did this mostly because Ill is posting in this forum. I trust him, I respect him. That respect came over a lot of years! If what I posted needs to be edited or deleted I will hold no ill-will if he does it.

Cal and the team's demise comes down to their intestinal fortitude. They never had enough to overcome where Cal's previous teams could. Just not enough will to overcome the slightest adversity.

This teams first focus was no longer basketball, it was something less AND, the coach was not calling the shots any longer. That is not good enough to win. (Debate how, when, where or why in some other forum.) Cal made a HUGE mistake I am not sure he can overcome. Call it my opinion or whatever you wish, I will not debate.

I still state it will take Cal somehow, un-kneeling to right this mess. (I hope he can.)

This is as much as I have posted in any regular forum in a long while. I did this mostly because Ill is posting in this forum. I trust him. If what I posted needs to be edited or deleted I will hold no ill-will.

Cal and the team's demise comes down to their intestinal fortitude. They never had enough to overcome where Cal's previous teams could. Just not enough will to overcome.

I do think the kneeling was a sign of Cal’s tendency to put the players first to an extent of actually harming the players. It’s a bit like a parent trying to give their child everything but they spoil them and the child ends up totally unprepared for the real world.

Sometimes to put someone first you have to show them some tough love and think of their long term needs not short term desires, and not do whatever they want. Cal came up short there this year on that front, from the kneeling to the starting Askew and BJ all year long.

As far as IL goes, I am just surprised that a seemingly articulate person as himself can’t admit that insulting people is not productive. It’s pretty simple to me, and he’s insulted my intelligence before, so maybe I should just throw rocks back as he recommends.

May be an idea to take a step back and look at the entire body of work first. Could be something was stated wrongly or perceived wrongly. Ill is as level-headed as they get. I don't see him making too big of a blunder. (Just my experience..over say...fifteen plus years of being on the same board with him.)

Spin away, spin away all you like, but a HOF coach just got paid $1 million dollars per win at UK, with supposedly 3-5 future pros on his roster!

$9+ million to turn in the worst season in school history! There’s no amount of sugar to coat that fact!

Fair enough, but consider if I thought badly of someone or thought they were a troll I wouldn’t bother making repeatedly making a critique in the first place. I myself could say things more kindly, I’m sure though.

In the end you take the good with the bad, and we all have some bad, and try to focus on the good. And if you can’t accept the bad it’s just best to ignore the person altogether. Appreciate the food for thought!

Tubby's stubbornness in regards to refusing to make staffing changes may likely happen with Cal as well...that's essentially what I was referring to. I agree, for the most part, Tubbyball was offensively challenged, although poor Tubby had crap for luck in March after '98.

IMO it's pretty simple - apart from an abysmal performance, Cal simply makes way too much money to publicly talk down to the fans - that is total bush and way beyond ignorant. Add in the screaming demeanor from the bench, poor to no adjustments, no tie, sloppy, seemingly no tact and all the other assorted oddities, and you have sure-fire recipe for insurrection in the fan base.

I don't believe it became personal with most folks, until he made it personal and continues to do so. Cal's tongue and fork are his own worst enemies. He should hire a publicist, an anger management specialist and a weight counselor and keep his big mouth shut. If not, Cal and his elite mouth can move right along to his next gig.

He is not above reproach and is totally replaceable.
