100 years ago - went to UK my freshman year. Rarely got up to eat breakfast - but did one morning and went to the caf to eat. Very few people there early in the AM. I got in line behind Sam Bowie. I am 6'3" and felt like a dwarf, and man - he got a ton of food. We spoke briefly and he went to a table full of UK players - including Mel Turpin (who was in line in front of Sam. He got even more food than Sam.)

I doubt they eat with the "common" people now - times have changed!

Anyway - not a lot of pretense - nice guys.

Not a player, but I walked in to a gym in Michigan to watch Draymond Green play after he had committed to UK.

Saw Tubby Smith sitting there all by himself and went and sat right behind him and chatted with him quite a bit. Great person and a night I will never forget.

Have sat next to Nazr AT LEAST 3 different times on a plane (exit rows for us tall guys :))

Super nice guy.

Spent a lot time with Sam Bowie as we helped each other get thru a Law and The Media class.

Another world class guy.

Honestly had so many encounters with UK athletes during my time there (many inebriated) just wish I could remember them....would be both hilarious and embarrassing Im sure

My dad and Shelby Linville were HS teammates/friends. I got to spend a lot of time with Shelby as a kid, as he and his wife visited my folks often. Shelby actually was my driving instructor later for drivers ed. Sure had some great stories of the old days. Could recite several individual big baskets and plays that he and the teams experienced. He recalled them like they happened yesterday for him.

Saw a few of the players leaving our house when dad wasn't home...

I kid.

Pops was a 101er and we've had several over for breakfast. I remember on Super Bowl(10) Sunday, Larry Johnson and Marion Haskins were over and they were slapping palms cause Dad had them rolling laughing. LJ told me he was pulling for the Steelers in the game, I'm a Cowboys fan.

Dan Issel's daughter and my daughter were born on the same day 1-11 and both were born in Methodist Hospital in Louisville. This is while Dan was on the Colonels. We talked b-ball while our wives were in labor about 8-9 hours. Many of the players on the team came and visited, inc Louie Dampier, Darrell Carrier, Artis Gilmore and others. Good times and I didn't take my camera..

Not necessarily for me, but the one that stands out the most...May 31st, 2010. My then 9 year old son, was absolutely enthralled with DeMarcus Cousins. So much so, that he made his Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby Car into a “Big Cuz” car. After the season, the players went on their annual autograph signing run, and DeMarcus came here to Louisviile, so my son wanted his autograph on the car. We stood in line FOREVER, but finally got to the front. Now by this time you could see DeMarcus was getting tired of signing stuff, but he was genuinely intrigued by my son’s car. He wanted to know all about how he built it, and how it did in the Derby. He signed it very legible right on top, and posed with my son holding the car. I’ll never forget that day seeing my son’s face glowing like that!!
Thank you for sharing that neat story. I remember doing those derbies in Scouts myself. I had a Pinewood Derby car painted up in Terry Labonte's Kellogg's paint scheme which I never did well in. I did a Green Bay Packers Rocket in that derby and did well and lastly the rain gutter regatta I had a UK boat and won that.

Would have been neat to get mine signed back then like you all got with DeMarcus Cousins. Also would have been a dream to get Favre's autograph on the rocket and I actually met Terry Labonte in Louisville at the 2007 Carl Casper's Car show but got a diecast car signed. Didn't even think about taking that Pinewood Derby car to get signed but would have been cool. He does accept fan mail at his dealership I could perhaps write him and send it.

I worked at a Ruby Tuesday in Louisville and Rick Robey would come in now and then. We had this very pretty blonde waitress who wasn't the brightest (she was from NC). I convinced her to walk up to Robey and say "Mr. Turpin, it's an honor meeting you."

Robey just smiled. Would have been funnier if there were other people around.

It was probably 1993 or 94, I went to the Derby with friends. We were in the infield of course. I was probably 23 at the time. In a drunken stupor I came across Tony Delk and Jared Prickett just hanging out. I probably asked if that’s who they were several times while they politely ignored my drunk ***. I then lost interest and walked away. I can’t blame them, I probably would’ve done the same. I’d like to say I remembered more from that day, but I don’t.

How I envision Dinner Bell Mel(RIP) going through the chow line at UK...
