Dontaie Allen also looks to be returning

Glad to see Askew returning, but hope he's prepared for being here 3-4 years. I want to see him develop and grow and be a guy who can be a major contributor, but I'm not too optimistic about him leading us to major success next year. Dontaie on the other hand could BREAK OUT next year. Needs to work on some things, but we've seen a lot of what he can do. If we have him and Powell on next year's team, and good lord if we have Mintz back as well, we'll have a collection of shooters we rarely have under Cal.

Other than transferring? I’m not sure.

Again, glad he is back. He won’t be ready to lead a team next year but hopefully he can continue to get better the next few years here. But it just shows how broken Cals model is that we are relived that a player like askew is “announcing” his return when it should absolutely be a given.

The ideal situation I think for Askew (and UK) would be if he's a backup and can come in and give us productive minutes. I could be dead wrong but I just do not see this kid leading us to anything. But he can still be a productive player and I'm glad he's back.

It would be nice if he's in a position to be the backup but compete for the starting spot.

is Askew a true PG? wouldn't he be better served playing the 2?
You know he looked really good playing PG in HS and camp circuit but it whats odd to me is that he was a really good 3 point shooter too! Something happened yo that this season because he looked uncomfortable shooting 3’s!.
IMO you know I just think if he gets his stroke back he’s better suited to play 2G—don’t think he’s quick enough to play or guard PG position in college!
Also I really believe it’s important for Brooks to come back and take Sarr’s spot as I think he could be really good next year alongside Tsheibwe/Collins. He needs another year definitely to improve his draft position!

Hopefully this will also be the news April a year from now. Not sure how he will do next season but as a junior he should be an outstanding contributor.

if he runs and hides then it's better for all involved. competition never hurt anyone. if he wants to get better then he stays and practices against whoever cal brings in.

I don't care if he's in Lexington or not-just want better players that bring traits that help the team win. The things he struggles with aren't going to get better with age-he is what he is--I mean Quade Green went from a fat kid prior to his Jr/SR years in HS to a guy UK signed and claimed he wanted to be the best defensive player in UK history. 4 years later, he's in great shape, and leading a team even worse than '21 UK at UW. He's older. In great shape and still not going to help you win. At some point it's best to move in different directions. Whomever gets to say they "Broke up" is fine with me, but there needs to be a return to recruiting the level of players who have this program in contention for Final Four and National Championships, not hoping they run it back from the worst team in Modern Kentucky basketball history due to just wanting to say "we got some kids back".

Good. Should have been a high school senior but instead was thrown into the role of leading a team with no returning experience (remember Brooks was out early). Never had time to catch up. I expect a much better sophomore and somebody who will also accept the role of coming off the bench if a better player is in front of him.

Glad he is coming back. The kid played his *** off all season. He had a few games where he looked pretty good and shot the ball fairly well earlier in the season. He was put in a tough position. I think we see a marked improvement next year and he will contribute

I really expect him to come into next season with a chip on his shoulder. He seems like a kid who really doesnt mind to put the work in. We will see.

Good deal! He didn't have the best season but he gained valuable experience. Another year to mature and work on his game will do nothing but help both him and the program.

For all of those saying, “Where was he going?”....you know transferring was an option right?

The whole transfer portal thing has been pretty big for the last couple years now.

Yeah but that just seemed extremely unlikely for Askew. Despite playing awful the majority of the season, Cal had thrown him out there time and time again and stuck with him.

That would just have been surprising to me if he transferred.

Agree. He's the kid that goes to Villanova or Gonzaga and is a rock star as a Jr or Sr. Not to go all 76ers, but if we're going to ask for juniors and seniors--trust the process.

The 'funny' thing about UK fans is that they scream for a few 3 and 4-year players, then the same screamers want to run those types off after their freshman year. (See awful comments about Askew, Allen and Ware).

Agreed- he can be a very valuable backup/ reserve type guy. Not all players are going to be great or fantastic but many can be good.

Well that makes them different and that's okay. I want the best talent on the roster and best team that can win games/contend for Final Fours and championships. Comes in different packages, but your best bet is a mix of high end talent and some experienced veterans who can play--staying around doesn't do anything if you can't play at a level that is required.

Ask the same fans if they will celebrate mediocre basketball for 3/4 years just because the team is known? They'd not like that either.

People have been saying all season he was leaving after it ended and going back out west. Even though he said before the season he wasn't one of those west coast players who would go running back. He addressed this before the season

I remember that. I think that's why I never really felt he'd be going anywhere.

It was a little weird lol.

I mean..........where was he ever going lol
Most thought he would transfer. You don’t just have to be nba bound to leave. Especially since players don’t have to sit out. We could still lose 6-7 guys

I'm not mad hes coming I just question what will it really help .. he has an issue age and experience cant erase , He's not quick enough to defend at this level . And to be a John Calapari type PG he has miles and miles to go . Could he get there ? Can he hang around and improve enough to over come the guys Cal is chasing/recruiting ? Doubtful. If he plays any major minutes at PG next year we are not going to be happy with the overall results. I'm afraid Devon is going to be in for a rude awakening at some point . I think hes at a level not best suited for him .

Hopefully next season we have a PG better than Askew or else we are in trouble.

I do think he can be a useful role off the bench tho.

MODS should start banning anyone who bashes the kids (as I’m sure some will in here). Support them and hope they get better or go root for somebody else. Welcome back Devin!
Define “bashes”. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. If someone stinks.....be honest and say it.

These kids largely get their butts kissed everywhere they go.....some tough love on an anonymous internet message board shouldn’t bother them.
