This was not on Cal, if anything, he's a victim of the situation and the circumstances.

Was it coaching that made Clarke give MSU 3 chances at 1 free throw. I mean how can any coach not game plan for something like that. FAAR HIM!!!!!!!!!!

I thought Cal lost it when UK went up 71-66 he started screaming and over coahing when he should have just let them play on...plus they went away from what they were doing, and stared letting Jackson take the jump shots, he has a tendency to scream too much. In the end it really doesn't make a big difference as they were not going anywhere anyway. just my opinion

Cal truly sucks closing a tight game. Absolutely awful play calling to close that game.

Which calls specifically were awful? In the last few possessions you get a Sarr shot in the paint, a open Sarr 3 off a pass from Allen that he missed, and the open Allen 3 that he missed.

As I posted elsewhere, this game was really lost in the first half when we can't switch to a zone and instead allow basket after basket from 2 feet. Yes, great comeback but I guarantee if Bama or whomever zones Miss State that will result in a blow out win.

You lost the game because you let them get up 14 at Half and whatever game plan you had defensively was gifting them 36 paint pts when they are a high turnover, poor shooting team.

Your execution at the end defensively summarizes this season--3 guys chasing the shooter like a 10U rec team gifting them 2 FT's and I have no issue with the last shot--best offensive player in the game and against Mississippi State got a wide open look and it's a recruiting issue that you don't have a guard who can race the ball up/get into the paint and attack with 7.1 secs left. That wasn't going to change today--so you live/die with that look.

This year must result in changes on the staff--they are as frayed and disconnected as a group as the players often appeared on the court. If you run it back with same staff, the level will not improve at a rate that is acceptable by UK standards.

I guess we all see what we wanna see. Jackson didn’t take a shot after they went up 5.

I don’t get it. You set the guy up who has been on fire all game with an open look and somehow that is bad coaching?

Yes it is. Going downhill with under 5 seconds, you go to the basket for a close shot or foul. Almost every other coach does that. We shoot a shot from 5 feet behind the arc... horrible odds in that situation no matter who is shooting.

Perfect play called. Allen bricks it.
Cant call it he perfect play call. It was an open look but with only one chance with a 40-50% success rate.
When you are down 1 and the other guys are in the bonus you have to drive it hard until stopped and give yourself 3 chances to score in stead of 1.

1. You make a close two
2. You get fouled and go to the line
3. You miss the close two with a chance at a put back

Add in the fact that the defense will alwasy overreact to the ball when time is running down so your chance at a put back on a miss are good. I put the pressure on the defense to stop the 3 chances vs. the 1 from 27 feet everytime. And I said so before the inbounds.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda.

Cats had 3 shots to win it. Two threes by DA and one by Saar. None fell. Molinar makes two tough threes.

After coming all the way back, Cats couldn’t pull it off. Been there, done that.

Yes, this has been a horrible year for the most part, though I believe Cal did have this team ready to play today and sometimes it just doesn't go the way you planned. This entire season has been abysmal, though I hoping he makes some significant changes in the off-season regarding his staff and ultimately the type of players he brings in.

I guess all the close wins in previous season were dumb luck.

It basically boils down to Boston, Clarke, Sarr and Brooks not coming close to meeting pre-seasons expectations, and Askew not being ready to be a starting UK PG.

what we thought was going to be our core 4, then plug in a serviceable PG with a decent bench ended up with our best player being the pre-season back-up PG, Jackson being better but still limited offensively, and then Boston showing a flash about once every two months.

Cal’s coaching wasn’t great, but there’s plenty of blame to go around. Of course at the end of the day he recruited these kids.
