It was hard to do, but I watched the game again this morning. A lot of things stood out, but the biggest was effort. That was not the only thing, but it was the biggest. We were out rebounded 38 to 23, by players who were shorter then us. White is 6'8" and he had 10 rebounds, Buffen is 6'7" and he had 10 rebounds, Rodriguez is 6'6" and he had 8 rebounds. Those three players out rebounded our team by 5 rebounds. Sarr, a 7 footer, had 3 rebounds, YES, a measly 3 rebounds.

Old Miss had twice as many TO's as UK, 14 to 7, and we had one more Assist then Ole Miss. I thought I heard the announcers say Ole Miss was not a good three point shooting team. If you don't guard a player, most of them can hit a three. We make good three point shooters, out of bad three point shooting teams.

Askew had 0 Assists, and 0 points. I will never understand why Cal doesn't move Mintz to Point Guard. The other thing I don't understand, is, when you need points, why do you have Allen on the bench. I wonder if Cal ever heard of running a player off more then one screen, to get him open. We needed points in the last 10 minutes. The game was there for taking, but we still had Boston shooting, but not hitting. Cal has a player who should be a Senior in High School, trying to run a Division One team. Is he out of his mind? I can answer that, YES!

Some poster who love Cal more then UK, will post about how we have lost close games, and with a little luck, we would have won. As I've said before, Losers always have excuses. Well, this was an excellent example of being out coached. We were in the game until the last 4 minutes, then coaching took over. Cal looked like a "Deer in the head lights," and all he could do, was jump up and down, and scream like a monkey. If watching him try to coach, and still think he is a good coach, then you don't know basketball. He won the first 6 years with the BEST players in college, and even then he got out coached. An example is the first year against West Virginia. He is still getting more talent then most teams, but his lack of coaching ability has caught up with him the last 5 or 6 years. We had more talent then Old Miss, but they had better coaching and more heart.

I don't dislike Cal. I have NO feeling for him, either way. I'm just willing to face the fact, that he is not a good coach. He's done a great job selling himself, to a lot of fans, the AD, and a lot of good players. The last 6 years, should have told a lot, but to a lot of fans, they can't stand the truth, which is their choice. They will criticize a lot of us, because we love UK, not Cal, and we don't drink the Kool Aid.

Like the fans, the players want this season to end. They are just not a great team, and they haven’t really been put in the position to succeed. I haven’t found myself upset with the players as much this year, as I think they do try and give effort. Many of them are just being asked to do something they aren’t capable of/or ready for yet. It was a very mismanaged team and we’ve basically been trying the same junk from the start of the season. I’m ready for it to end.

I didn't see the effort last night. I always tape the games, and watch them again, stopping them a lot. I don't want to criticize a young man, if it isn't deserved, and it's NEVER deserved if he is giving effort, 100%. I have no problem with Boston only hitting 1 of 9. He was trying, but probably trying to do to much. I remember Davis only hitting around 1 of 12 or something like that in the NC Title. However, I have a problem when we're bigger then players and get out rebounded by 15 rebounds. Sarr should dominate the board against this team, and he got a measly 3 rebounds. Complete lack of effort.

Yeah........ I agree with you. I didn't see last night's game and can't speak to that BUT in all the previous games I can honestly say that the players seem to have been making an honest effort. Maybe that changed last night, I don't know.

The effort has been missing for a while. I watched the WVU vs Baylor game before ours last night and that’s what jumped out to me. Guys were hustling, fighting for rebounds, moving on offense without the ball.
Cal has screamed and jumped up and down so much the players stand there like zombies afraid. Brooks looks like he’s regressed, so much so that he shouldn’t even be on the floor.
What bothers me the most though is how Cal is running off the players that could be a returning core. The Allen talk is just to appease the fans and try to save face when Allen leaves after the season. Then he can say “I gave him a chance.” And who knows what’s going on with Ware.

I agree the effort wasn’t great last night, it actually made me fall asleep during the second half. I do think they’ve tried to give effort this season though. I’ve played on some crappy teams, and at this point all you’re doing is trying to get to the end. The staff should be throwing out all kinds of line ups at this point to mix things up, but we got the same guys still playing. We keep putting our heads down and running into a wall, you can tell everyone is burned out.

Sarr has been extremely underwhelming. I remember thinking his was the last piece to a final four run...

Exactly. Nobody is “mad” at Askew. It’s not his fault he’s not good and was thrown to the wolves.

The blame is on Calipari for having to resort to begging a #20 ranked high school junior to reclassify and come lead a Division 1 college basketball team. Not to mention a high profile division 1 team. That is on Calipari. One of many ignorant things he’s done in recent years.

Cal has screamed and jumped up and down so much the players stand
Even the years early on when we had impressive numbers of W's....this has been one of my complaints.
Cal's teams seem to do a lot of that....players standing around. Waiting for.....I don't know. Only exception that comes to mind was Herro, although I'm sure there has been some others.

My other complaint....every year....with our 'athleticism' and 'wing span' every single year I can't understand why we don't press like Pitino era.

What’s bad is Ole Miss had 5 guys you have never heard of and they beat our *** good. A lot of teams have done that this year and we are the team that’s supposed to be the most talented. When that keeps happening you have to look at the coaching, he really doesn’t know what to do.

This is exactly what I have been saying all season! We have one true ball handler (Mintz running point is laughable) in a kid that would have gotten spot minutes at best on last years team. However, this year he has been thrust into leading the winningest program in history. How Cal could think this team could work with a HS senior (that is far from elite) playing 30 mins a game is the issue. Cal is going to run into the same issue next year with no elite guards coming in, unless Hickman just really improves leaps and bounds over the summer. Askew is at least another year away from being able to play real minutes on a team that expects to compete at a high level

I would guess at this point most of the players feel like there is nothing left to play for

Most of them didn't play here for the name of the front to begin with.

Tanked, Your probably correct. I was always taught you give 100%, regardless. To me, it was called PRIDE, and I can never remember not giving everything, regardless of what it was. I'm OLD SCHOOL, and I know I can't always WIN, but I can always give 100%. I tried to instill that in my children and grandchildren, and I believe I did.

Agree 100%. Why be mad at Askew? What is this kid supposed to do? Tell the coach hell no I am not going in? Hell no I refuse to play? I have no doubt Askew is giving it 100%. Sarr-why be mad at him? He is clearly not a back to the basket player. Again is he supposed to tell Cal no I am not going to post up? Boston-he clearly is allowed to play AAU ball in a UK uniform.

I feel sorry for most of these kids truth be told. Imagine realizing the dream of playing at one of the greatest college programs of all time and you find out it is a **** show. The coach refuses to adapt to his talent.

We all heard Cal say this year (paraphrasing) that of course the higher rated kids are going to play more. Do you think that was the recruiting pitch he hit Ware, Fletcher and Allen with? Hey you can come in and compete for the job and time--BUT for the majority of the season I am going with the rankings coming in for PT. Maybe by the end of the year you will get some clock if the 5 star crashes and burns.

My hat is off to anyone who watches the games anymore. I can’t do it, and won’t until Cal is no longer the coach. But to watch it twice takes a strong stomach, from what everyone is saying about last night.

It all falls on the coach, and talent evaluation. He missed big time on these guys. This was an obvious result of Mitch’s lifetime contract. Calipari doesn’t care anymore. Askew is a poor man’s Saul Smith. Boston is so over-rated it’s scary.. I’ve said it before Calipari just can’t win without far superior talent. Hopefully next season COVID is over and people don’t go to the games, and Calipari man’s up and retires....or we get a Joker result.

Backer, it was just as tough as the first time, but if I'm going to put something on here that is critical of Cal, or a player, then I have to know what I say is correct. I don't like to be critical of the players, unless I don't think they give effort. Boston was 1 for 9, but I thought he tried hard. Jackson played hard, but some of the others didn't give a lot of effort, namely Sarr. There were others, but I don't need to name them. Cal is the main problem. He keeps blaming the players, but their not the main reason. Cal hasn't forgot how to coach, I just think he has forgot the basics of coaching. I don't think he relies on coaching ability, as much as he relies on the players talent, and he is not getting the talent he once did. His main goal, as most of us know, is to get players to the NBA, not win Championships. Winning a NC is tough, and some luck involved, but getting players to the NBA is not as tough, but depends on recruiting, more then coaching. Cal has a big ego, and cannot brag about winning NC's, but can brag about sending players to the NBA.

What’s Cal’s record at UK in Elite 8 and FF games when talent is probably the most equal and Xs and Os come more to the fore. I’m guessing it’s not 3rd best all-time

But have you ever thought that in his 12 years he's had the BEST players in basketball history. Give a good coach, not even a great coach those players, and their winning percentage would not be the 3rd highest winning percentage in college basketball history, but the NUMBER 1 winning percentage in college basketball history.
Tell me about his percentage in the last 6 years. I guarantee you WILL NOT! All Cal lovers, not UK lovers, like to "Pick the fly **** out of the pepper."

First, he hasn't had the BEST players in history...that is an absurd comment.

Second, his record in his last 4 NCAA tournaments (since 2016- which I assume is what you want so you can avoid any of his prior success) is 9-4 which is 69%, which would be good for Top 5 all time still.

Third, you asked for his last 6 appearences which takes us back to 2014 and he is 18-6 which is 75% good for a tie for 2nd all time.

I don't pretend Cal hasn't stunk this year as bad as the team.

I also don't pretend that he isn't without flaw.

Finally, I don't pretend like his historical success as a tournament coach doesn't matter.

You tell me who you want and I'll tell you there is a damn good chance they don't have a quarter of the success Cal has had in his career in NCAA's.

Like a lot of so-called fans, you can't see the forest for the trees. His recruiting class has been ranked NUMBER 1, by the pundits ALL 12 years. I know, your smarter then the ones who rank them, or think you are. I'm not going to continue to argue with you. You continue to love Cal, and most of us will continue to love UK. There are a lot of coaches who would do better then Cal, coaching. He could recruit, and he must have the best talent to be competitive, because his coaching sucks. Just check the last half in our games, especially the last 4 minutes of the game. He looks like a "Deer in the headlights." Tell me about how great his coaching is this year. Tell me about the last 4 to 6 minutes when we were leading, and folded like a "Cheap suit." You love Cal, I love UK, so nothing is going to change either of our minds. No need to argue with you. Please do me the courtesy, and don't respond to my post, and I will do likewise for you.

OLD STOLL FIELD GUY!

Do me a favor and don't tell me what to do.

You continue to be wrong with your analysis on recruiting. You said he's had the best players of all time. He didn't even have the #1 class in 14, 16, 17, 18, 19.

His system needs to change, he cannot win with OAD only. I never said anything different.

You just rant and rave making assumptions about people that don't agree with your every word because you are a bitter fella with some agenda to rule a message board.

BTW, Cal isn't even my favorite UK coach of my lifetime. Get a grip.

You know where to put your post! If you think Cal is a great coach, you are an IDIOT. Most fans on here have forgot more basketball, then you will ever know. You got one thing right, "No one can tell you anything." Your what most of us call, "A Know It All."

More assumptions. I have stated facts that you cannot dispute and instead you just sputter nonsensical garbage back.

Funny that you are telling me I know nothing yet I'm "a know it all" in your words...might want to take a look in the mirror pal.

Because they don't press in the NBA....and that's all that matters

Murray moved a lot. Yeah, I don’t understand why we don’t press either. It’s really dumbfounding considering all the long athletes we have every year. Cal doesn’t use his talent correctly IMO.

Asked this before:

What’s Cal’s record at UK in the elite 8 and FF games? You know, when talent level gets a lot more equal and Xs and Os become way more impactful.

How many years does Cal’s first five years buy him? How many years do the fans have to endure his condescension? How many years do we have to endure losing to the Evansville, Richmond, Utah, GA techs of the world? How many more years of missing the tourney is Cal allowed?

I do t doubt you are a UK fan, but when you say things like”what other coach can we get that has had the success that cal has had”, you come-across as Cal is the best we can get. I disagree with that. What was Cal’s success before coming here higher than other coaches currently out there?

I don’t know if you fear the unknown without Cal, or are just a huge Cal fan. We have had five different coaches win a title at UK. Cal did not make UK. UK made Cal.
