The divorce. Folks, it’s coming. You can see it from a mile away. Losing Payne was tough, but losing Dwayne Peevey as the intermediary between Cal and Mitch was probably the death blow. Mitch and Cal are very different. Their personalities clash. Cal is loud, brash and drips with hubris. Mitch is rather humble and quiet. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Cal’s weakness is stubbornness, and Mitch’s is not particularly liking confrontation.

Mitch has to sit Cal down after this disgrace of a season and demand changes. Cal won’t like that at all. This will likely be played out publicly and be very ugly next season. Fans are pissed and rightfully so. Three freshman will leave off the worst team in forever, and any support Cal had will erode at break neck speed. If next season doesn’t produce a really good team, the atmosphere in Rupp could become poisonous. Cal’s buddies in the media will defend him and claim our fans are unrealistic. I hope I’m wrong but all the signs are there.

Look I don’t like Cal and the way he talks at press conferences or the way he screams constantly at games and most of all his unwillingness to be flexible as a Coach - we beat UF yesterday by 20+ if Coach White stays in man. Does our Coach make the same move and stay with it? I think not

That all being said- Cal is a competitor- he will not put out a team like this next year. With a above average point guard and we are 14-8 at worst this year. Not having at least two true point guards was a huge blunder of at least one stellar one. Look for incoming transfers galore and a reclassification

I don't care what roster he builds , I don't think he has the edge to coach teams the way he used too. We probably will have a new roster next year , yeah more transfers . Lots of " this team looks great " BS from the cheerleaders here . But it doesn't matter . His offense won't change , His screaming won't change , His Sub patterns went change . Cal himself is the issue , not the 5 on the floor most of the time. I predict a 19-10 or 18-9 type season and people will marvel at the turnaround JC did at UK .

Look at the non conference schedule in non Covid years....it's basically UL, Champion's classic (i.e. a Michigan St or Duke), Big12/SEC challenge and then the home slate is 8 other games vs. poor teams. Why do you think he's all "I am out of my mind for playing this schedule" literally every other interview on why the season is so bad.

I'll grant him we for sure needed a few more scrub teams to not stick an "L" on us.....but were teams like Richmond, Notre Dame, UL, Georgia Tech, Richmond...hell even UNC/Kansas aren't having good year really a murder's row of a schedule?

Why do people think there is some line in the sand associated with next season? I'm seeing people post stuff like "If next season isn't better then ______".
I'm saying that it doesn't matter what happens next season or even the one after that. Calipari has ALL of the power. No school, including and possibly especially UK, is going to pay what it would take to buyout Calipari's contract. To put it bluntly, UK can't afford it and the donors/boosters aren't going to fork over that kind of money either. We're looking at 5-6 years before the number comes down to a level that is even possible to consider.
The only person who can fire John Calipari...is John Calipari.

Cal LOVES to prove the world wrong when the world has counted him out. That's what drives his "ego". What better way to do that than to come back strong next season and get UK back to a Final 4 to stick it to all of us "Basketball Benny's".

If he's lost that drive, then he will just sit back and be satisfied with what he has ALREADY accomplished in his career and UK Basketball is DOOMED.

Cal is also very stubborn and to this point in his career at UK, has refused to come off of his NBA first culture and favoritism.

You people need to not lose your cool. This season is way out of the norm. We finished in the top 10 in 4 out of the 5 last years and the one year we didn't, we finished 17th.

while I think option 2 is the most likely, I see it as only one more season
if we stink it up next year - and by that I mean lose at rupp, lose in the SEC, knocked out of the tourney with no final 4 run and Cal is still talking his bullsh** about his pet players having to get their shots, people will just be belligerent to him. As angry as fans are now, they is a certain level of respect for what he has done here AND the belief that he is willing to change. He'll get one more season to win the fans back. If the fanbase believes things are status quo, alot of people are going to do everything they can to make sure he and his family are miserable here. Its not about contract buyout , its about not being able to leave your house without people jeering you in public.

Option 3 is not a realistic scenario at all, because of what I've said about option 2.

One of the huge problems of our program is our fans are either taking what they hear too literally, or they just aren't very bright. I'm gonna give most the benefit of the doubt. What I mean by this is for example:
1st: Coach cal saying You aren't coming back, you're going pro. I won't let you come back. Half of our fan base heard this and still to this day believes cal refuses to let players come back and pushed them out the door. The answer, the proof that he doesn't mean it that way..... The majority of our players come back. If he really pushed kids away to the NBA nobody would come back ever.

Strictly for recruiting purposes. If he didn't care about winning why in the world is he so passionate in the games and screaming and constantly coaching??! If he didn't care to win would it benifit him at all to try n coach on mistakes? What would he benifit from helping kids get rich only? That argument doesn't even make sense.
Sure he wants to help kids reach their dream, but it's common knowledge to understand its a benifit and not a goal

I agree with your post. I also believe as you do that this situation will be played out publicly and it should. Mitch should treat Cal the way he treats his less than favorite players when they can't produce victories from his antiquated coaching style. If he managed the roster properly and didn't turn our program into an NBA farm system, he wouldn't have to be in multiple places at one time. He could actually coach his team instead of the assistants doing it.
