I like that Cal brought us back from the mediocrity of the end of the Tubby era and the BCG era.

I also like that we are to a point that being one of the last 8 teams left in America twice in the four tournaments since the 2015 team is considered so horrible folks think he needs fired. Only 1 team made 3 in that span.

We’ve been in the elite 8 3 times since 2015(counting 2015) not 4

I wasn't counting 2015. The decline of why folks want him fired was after the 2015 season

EDIT: Noticed i left twice out of the original post

If U wasn’t counting 2015 then we’ve only been to 2 elites 8’s. Not sure where you came up with 4

I think you misread what I put or I wrote it out badly. Probably the later

I meant we have been to 2 elite 8s in the last 4 tournaments

Think you replied before I mentioned the edit I made. See, I thought it was my bad typing skills.

I like Cal when he surrounds himself with top notch recruiters and Assistant coaches. Losing Kenny Payne has clearly hurt and before with Antigua where we were getting top 5 who might display their skills during their one year at UK before leaving.

Putting the team coaching duties completely to the side, I think Calipari has been a really good ambassador for the UK basketball program - both in the state and outside it - and a good guy overall.

But I think the job is wearing thin with him - and judging by this message board, it's certainly wearing thin with a vocal portion of the fan base.

I think he's a good man and was just what UK needed after the bad years of Tubby and Billy G. It's gone a sideways recently, but I think he deserves a chance to correct it. He was brought here because of his mantra "refuse to lose" and his desire to kill every opponent and recruit the best of the best. We got that for the most of his time here. He deserves a chance to correct it. I'm hoping he does.

I liked that he had Robic as his offensive guy early on

You bring up a good point. And it's something that drove out Joe B. Maybe Pitino was right to move when he did. This job is demanding much like Notre Dame, Alabama, Yankees, etc. Maybe it does have a shelf life.

Even last year when Bama was 10-2 and watched LSU dominate on the way to 15-0 there were some fans calling for a change. Crazy as it sounds, it's true if you looked at message boards and social media. He made a change a couple of years back to get better offensively and it all clicked this year. In basketball, you don't need to wait 2or 3 years. You can make a jump quickly the next year with a change in philoshpy. That is what Cal needs to do.

The question is will he do what is necessary, which means moving away from his OAD “helping raise families out of poverty” system he brags about. Is he willing to put the Kentucky program first over being a philanthropist.

Heard he poops ice cream

I still like me some Cal altho after this years debacle the luster has begun to fade a bit no question. As much as many on this site want a change it isn’t happening. I also think he’s earned the right to have a chance to turn things around. I do believe he has to shift his philosophy in several ways which is sometimes hard for high profile people with big egos.

I truly hope he rights the ship and we are all happy next year and moving forward.

There was a lot of things I liked about Cal early on, but after watching him botch FF games against UCONN, WVU and Wisky, I saw right away that his game management lacking, then the roster turnover each year, ugly basketball early in each season, bowing out to lesser teams in the tourney, I was getting apathy that he would never win another title here. But what he did this past summer and he and the team did at Florida, I can not think of one thing I like about this Cal, nothing, none, nada.

But oh yea Cal has a nice head full of hair?

Look closely. It appears he’s trying to cover a bald spot in the back.

You might be right. This gig might have a self life. I think as a fanbase we love our cats so profoundly that it does borderline obsession. But hey I get it. We don't have the NFL, NBA, or anything pro. We as fans put all our passion into one outlet from birth and it makes it electric. Electricity is exciting but it can also fry you. Cal looks tired and he doesn't have 50K virgins to drink to renew him like rat boy.

A lot of people mention Orlando leaving, but no one mentions Strickland. He's the dude bringing guys into the G league and was a guy who had been there and done that in the NBA. I feel like we really miss him and what he brought to all these young eventual pros. Something I think Cal screwed up on is he made this his buddy club. Barbee got fired come on aboard. Robic is like a piece of furniture, but probably like that cozy chair, you have always owned. Bruiser reminds him of the old days at UMass. Working with your friends has to be cool, but I'm not sure it is the most competitive and driving environment to be in. You are going to lose good assistants that is what happens, but you have to bring in the new group. Pitino always did this. Hence Donovon and Tubby being his assistants. I'm not sure Cal will leave behind guys like that or have to worry about facing his former pupils, at least not many. No one wants them and that should be an indicator we shouldn't either. As the head coach of a monster like UK you have to have support and Cal has done himself a disservice with the guys he counts on. He got them jobs, cool. We once had Payne, Orlando, and Strickland. Now, meh.

Edit: Whoops I left off what I liked. Got sidetracked. I liked how Cal made us the it program again, how we were the exciting program leading the way, how we were ahead of the game and using every angle. Now I don't feel like that, but I did and it was great. Now it feels too comfy and like we are being left behind.

I agree with the above post that there has been no hint of a scandal.

But what I like most is his making his home available to his players, and along with that his stressing the importance of good character as much as he can in recruiting. Also, his ability to be tough when necessary, but also loving and supportive when necessary.

Finally, and I know I've mentioned this before on this board, there's that time when he was in Memphis and a columnist who he was friendly with got fired from his paper. According to the columnist, Cal was the only one to reach out and tell him how much he admired his work, and how important that was in getting back on his feet.

OK, one more. I love how how his daughter defends him on twitter. If he ever leaves that should be a nonnegotiable requirement for any new candidate - at least one family member who will defend your *** no matter what.

That's the amazing thing about Saban. He loses 1-3 top assistants per year. He just reloads with top notch, proven coaches or asst. coaches and doesn't miss a beat. No doubt Saban knows a ton of coaches in the CFB network, but I've never heard where he hires his buddies.

Yeah I mean on some levels I like how Cal really does make it a family, but then there is that drunk uncle who is always embarrassing you, and as great as a family can be it can also be annoying and I wouldn't want my family at work.

I like threads that have positive things to say about Cal, but this one isn’t All That.
