With #1 overall picks: 111-6 = 95% winning percentage.
Tournament with #1 overall picks: 13-2 = 87% winning percentage.
With top 5 picks: 143-12 = 92% winning percentage.
Tournament with top 5 picks: 16-3 = 84% winning percentage.

Without #1 overall pick: 223-78 = 74% winning percentage.
Tournament without #1 overall picks: 16-6 = 73% winning percentage.
Without top 5 picks (regular season): 191-72 = 73% winning percentage.
Tournament without top 5 picks: 13-5 = 72% winning percentage.

They all had lottery players though didn’t they?

Cal also had lottery picks in those years he didn't have a #1 pick.

Yet his win percentage is dramatically different when he doesn't have those guys. Can he only win at the highest level with #1-5 picks?

The substantial sample size of 11 years says, "yes."

Even his best UMass/Memphis teams had top 2 picks.

The same people like you who make the quick rebuttal that "having really good players wins more games" are often the ones that deflate the notion that Cal needs elite talent to win at the highest level.

Which is it? If landing elite (top 1-5) talent matters for Cal, shouldn't we be concerned that he can't sign the top players anymore? And if it doesn't matter, then what do we make of the sample size above?

How many #1 picks did Tubby have?

How is that relevant? Tubby was forced out of Lexington because of his incompetency.

He couldn't get #1 picks and that's part of the reason his winning percentage looks virtually the same as Cal's when Calipari similarly doesn't get #1 picks.

And guess what, Cal isn't getting #1 picks anymore. Why is it that their percentages are frighteningly similar without the "best of the best"?

Once again, does Cal need top picks to win at the highest level?

72% tourney percentage is pretty good. That’s basically averaging an Elite Eight.

hes been easily the most consistent tourney performer. We just put ourselves in a hole every year and have to make a run from a really u desirable draw.

I wanna see what happens after this season. That’s when the most important changes need to occur. Cal is arguably the best coach in the country when he has rosters with talent AND experience that have been with each other and the staff a few years. But by his own design he rarely if ever has that anymore. He’s trying to do this with one hand tied behind his back.

But 21% points lower?

Did Jay Wright need #1 overall picks to win two titles in the Cal era?

Did UConn?

Duke also won 2 titles during this era without a #1 pick.

Do you know how much freaking luck goes into winning a National Championship? I don't understand the thought processes around here.

watch the last 5 mins of the 2015 wisconsin game as cal ***** his pants up 4.

Agreed. Cal is not without fault. Not saying that. Also saying nearly every team with the exception of all time greats catch a break to win a NC.

Look no further than the Laettner shot...something that couldn't have been pulled of 5 more times out of 100. Virginia a couple years back. UCLA vs Princeton. Villanova buzzer beater vs UNC. NC State vs Houston. UK vs Iowa in 2nd round of 98....and Duke/Utah, Standord in OT.

Just saying titles are not won by the best teams every year in CBB.

When in doubt, deflect by comparing Cal to other coaches and programs that aren't even on the same map as UK in terms of history, program funding, coaching salaries, program resources, fan base, and expectations.
It’s called comparative analysis. If you are seeking factual comparison, you have to compare with similar resumes. You’re smarter than that.

Did you plagiarize your way through college? He's showing respect because it takes a bit of time to look up numbers. It's basic research, but someone has to do in order for it to be manifested, and to date, no one has posted these stats on this message board.
You can’t claim a holier than thou intellectual attitude when you just showed you’re not interested in a full picture.
