Sorry but I can’t support hiring a coach that has never been a head coach anywhere here at Kentucky Payne is not the answer, didn’t we try that in football once, that Phillips guy I think, how did that work out.
Nope, we're not getting anyone that's considered to be a "Rolls Royce" of coaches. A lot don't want the pressure and for that reason you won't see someone like Beard. Whoever takes the job needs to be someone that's been at an established program for several years.Hiring a well established coach that has done very well already is going to be very difficult. Not very many are going to want to follow Cal AND more importantly they’re not going to want the pressure of the job. Coaches at universities where they can win a title will most likely say no. They’re already well paid and don’t want the headache of the UK job. We experienced this already before we hired Pitino. Lute Olsen turned us down. I think PJ Carlisemo did as well If I remember correctly. I know we were facing probation, but it was still a very attractive job. We had to settle for Pitino, who was not anywhere near what he would become at the time we hired him. Yes he took the likes of Providence to the Final Four, but he still was no where near an experienced, well established head coach. I just don’t see us getting the likes of Stevens, Donovan, Few, Izzo, etc.
I’m about 100% sure that Few isn’t motivated by money. He loves where he is, doesn’t have anywhere near the pressure he would have here, and I’m sure he’s pretty well paid by Gonzaga. Could he make more here? No doubt, but I just do not believe he’d be interested in the least. I see him like Izzo. He’s a lifer where he’s at now.Open the check book and offer Few, did anyone see Gonzaga play today, that’s what a healthy UK program used to look like. Their offense a thing of beauty. If he says no I say offer Holtman, UK ties coached in the big time awhile. If not him take a flier on Pope. Hell we can’t get any worse than we are now. Gillespie coaches better than Cal is right now half drunk.
He’s like Few. He’s not leaving regardless of money.Few ain’t leaving Gonzaga. Pearl would not and should not even get a sniff. Let’s offer Izzo a 5 year $60 million deal. He is the best at doing the most with the least.
I hope that is true.Doesn't matter because he won't be at UK regardless.
That really isn't thay impressive considering the amount of times they have missed the tournament, been booted early and the lack of accomplishments. Would be a nad hire. What we have is far better. Cal has as many E8's the last 3 seasons alone as Drew has in 17 at Baylor. He's also won 367 games as a HC. May as well face facts, we're not getting anyone that's made a really deep run in the tournament. Any better ideas? Beard is not coming to Lexington and hasn't been been a HC that long. Who's out there?
Actually I think Beard would definitely be interested. I’m just not sure I’d be interested in him. He’s certainly not a Rolls Royce of coaches as far as I’m concerned. But I definitely think he’s a possibility.Nope, we're not getting anyone that's considered to be a "Rolls Royce" of coaches. But look what he's done at Baylor, of all places. Not exactly a powerhouse in basketball. And, he's also beaten us the last two times we've played them. He's got a great team this year and did last year as well.I hope that is true.

Drew from Baylor
Well he just sucked as a coach. That means absolutely nothing moving forward. Every cosch in every sport was an assistant at some point.Sorry but I can’t support hiring a coach that has never been a head coach anywhere here at Kentucky Payne is not the answer, didn’t we try that in football once, that Phillips guy I think, how did that work out.
Why woukd he go to any of those schools?Oregon, Clemson, Wake, Forest. IL, Texas, UCLA all made publicly known offers.
He'll listen but he's not a good fit for UK regardless. If the truth were known, he's probably making just as much as Cal through "perks" by the Tech boosters. Whoever coaches UK needs to have been at a school for several years with an established program. We may have to look toward the NBA but Stevens probably won't come back to coach anywhere on the college level; same goes for John Beilein.Actually I think Beard would definitely be interested. WTF has he done? He has been to 2 E8 in like 14 seasons. Never won the regular season conference or tournament championships. Went to the NIT 8 times and hasn’t been past the SW16 since 2012. What are you seeing? Baylor is in the big 12 and has solid resources. It really isn't that hard of a place to be successful. But look what he's done at Baylor, of all places. Only assistant that worked out here was Joe B. and only because he was already on staff.Sorry but I can’t support hiring a coach that has never been a head coach anywhere here at Kentucky Payne is not the answer, didn’t we try that in football once, that Phillips guy I think, how did that work out.
Look at the past couple of years, plus 2012. He's won a lot of games in a place that no one wanted to coach. I remember the days when Baylor was consistently winning about 15 games a year and no one cared. It's a hard place to win in basketball. They were never any good before he got there.WTF has he done? That's the thing; it has to be a tenured coach and not someone that's had a decent run of a couple of years. He isn’t “there” yet, but Nate Oats will be a damn good coach at Bama before getting picked up for a big job.
I’m not sure NBA coaches (at least successful ones) are a good match for high level college basketball. It’s just too different. I’m not sure they want to recruit and teach like it takes to do well in college. Plus, there’s all the problems that come with 18-21 year old college students (academics, etc.). They’ve got to deal with a lot more non- basketball related crap. He'll listen but he's not a good fit for UK regardless. If the truth were known, he's probably making just as much as Cal through "perks" by the Tech boosters. He won't go to any school, that is the point. UCLA and IU are bluebloods and UCLA has more banners than anyone. IU has 5. While both need to be resurrected, neither are crappy programs. TX also pays well, invest heavily, and has nice facilities and is easy to recruit. Again, not a bad job at all. Brad wants to be in the NBA and has stated so repeatedly. You can offer him 15 million and he will turn you down, but be my guest embarrassing yourself. You definitely don't seem like the type to mind! Why woukd he go to any of thise schools?
This is UK, not Clemson.
You're probably right about that but the same was said about Pitino before we hired him. It would have to be someone tired of dealing with overpaid personalities every night. It would have to be someone that coached in college, went to the NBA then got sick of it.I’m not sure NBA coaches (at least successful ones) are a good match for high level college basketball. If we’re gonna look back all the way to 2012 let’s look at Cals results then. It wouldn’t make sense to replace Calipari with a guy who’s had worse resultsLook at the past couple of years, plus 2012. He's won a lot of games in a place that no one wanted to coach. I remember the days when Baylor was consistently winning about 15 games a year and no one cared. Drew is a Calipari mold con man. He's bad at cheating and has a record that's not good.
Beard is the first choice after the ususal suspects. It just makes sense. He can recruit Texas, he's a good defensive mind, and he's a hungry coach who's been on the verge of a title and came up short. He's young, humble, and hungry. It's perfect.
I have no idea why anyone would be hesitant about hiring Beard. Makes absolutely no sense. I can't even find a single reason.
Look at the last couple of years. You have to look at someone that's been at a program for a while and not a coach that's had a decent run of a couple of years. He has a team that could very well win it all this season and they were good last year as well. Don't think for one minute that he'll stay at Baylor if they make the FF.If we’re gonna look back all the way to 2012 let’s look at Cals results then. He was just in the NIT year before last! WTF are you smoking?Look at the past couple of years, plus 2012. He's won a lot of games in a place that no one wanted to coach. I remember the days when Baylor was consistently winning about 15 games a year and no one cared. It's a hard place to win in basketball. They were never any good before he got there.
Pitino went to the NBA after he coached here, not before. And he sucked in the NBA and was fired. He was not an NBA coach. Sort of my point. The two are so different. You're probably right about that but the same was said about Pitino before we hired him. It would have to be someone tired of dealing with overpaid personalities every night. It would have to be someone that coached in college, went to the NBA then got sick of it.
You can pay Few 1 billion a year, he wont be coming to UKOpen the check book and offer Few, did anyone see Gonzaga play today, that’s what a healthy UK program used to look like. Will, he's done a great job at Baylor. They were poised for deep run last year before the whole thing got called off and he could very well win it all this season. We all know about the pressure at UK, but I'm telling you that Baylor is a tough sell. Have you ever been to Waco? Not exactly the garden spot of Texas. He was just in the NIT year before last! WTF are you smoking?
It's not that hard of a place to win. You are in a power 5 conference, in a state with solid recruits and at a school willing to spend. It's not going to be easy, but it is a lot more pressure here, I can assure you.
Just the fact you support him eliminates him in my book. I can’t see how someone that hates Kentucky so badly could be trusted to pick for us.
I don't recall him sucking in the NBA after he left Providence. He had the Knicks in the playoffs but started having problems with the owner. However, he did suck on the second go around with the Celtics.Pitino went to the NBA after he coached here, not before. And he sucked in the NBA and was fired. He was not an NBA coach. Sort of my point. The two are so different.
He isn’t “there” yet, but Nate Oats will be a damn good coach at Bama before getting picked up for a big job.
He has done a good job at Baylor, but do you honestly believe he could do a better job here than what Calipari has done? Will, he's done a great job at Baylor. Why do you call the University of Kentucky, John Calipari?
This. I want to see who comes back next year, he really needs to get a handle on the roster turnover. If I had my choice, I’d like for Cal to stay several more years, assuming he makes some changes that are much needed. But, I’m not sure he has it in him to make those changes. One thing is certain, we’re going to find out.
Baylor is a great school, in a reasonable sized town. It's sits between Dallas and Austin. Have you ever been to Lexington, KY? I can assure you it isn't the entertainment capitol of America. Will, he's done a great job at Baylor. I’m a hard no on Drew. It would eat him up and he’d end up getting us in trouble. I see him as a Bruce Pearl clone. Will, he's done a great job at Baylor. With what we're seeing now, how could it be worse? I don't know who would be the answer but our program is a total mess right now. I'm just saying that whoever comes here needs to be a coach from an established program. He has done a good job at Baylor, but do you honestly believe he could do a better job here than what Calipari has done?
Nope, I guarantee that if he makes a FF this year he'll be a hot commodity. For the record, I lived in Lexington for over 6 years and in a town about 30 miles from Waco for about 4 years. Baylor may be a good school but Waco is one of the roughest, most dangerous towns in Texas. It's not the quaint Baptist town everyone thinks it is.Baylor is a great school, in a reasonable sized town. It's sits between Dallas and Austin. Have you ever been to Lexington, KY? I can assure you it isn't the entertainment capitol of America.
Your definition of Great job must be very loose. 2 E8 in 14 years, 8 NIT's, no conference or regular season championships is less than mediocre to be honest. UK will pass!
