Could really use a tune up/complete overhaul. Our half court offense has become the basketball version of gran and stoops idea of an offensive game plan. It’s infuriating when we’d rather continuously go straight into the body of a defender and try to draw fouls rather than run any resemblance of a modern offense. At least they are getting their one on one games ready for the nba I guess?

“It used to be that good defense beats good offense. Good defense doesn't beat good offense anymore, it’s just like last week. Georgia has as good a defense as we do an offense, and we scored 41 points on them. That's not the way it used to be. It used to be if you had a good defense, other people weren't going to score. You were always going to be in the game.

The guy doesn't recruit shooting. The game is literally about shooting now. For a guy that sends so many guys to the nba. You would think he'd understand how important having 3pt shooting is today.

Calipari instead recruits 18 power forwards and long rangy rebounders that can't shoot. We are in an era of position less basketball. And he's still recruiting rim runners and post players lol. I mean it's ridiculous. There is no AD Kat or Boogie out there. If they ain't out there then leave it alone.

The game has passed Cal by. Point blank.

I don’t think this is part of the offensive philosophy. These are some bad habits of the players that grew over years of AAU basketball rearing their ugly heads. This will take time to iron out. Cal keeps it very simple at the beginning of the year offensively so as to not overload the players and progressively adds more moving parts as the season continues. If you go back and watch one of the first couple of games of any of the last five seasons you would see that ball movement is very stagnant in the beginning.

It's not just the lack of 3 pt shooters, it's also making tough 2 pt shots. We shot 36% from the field today, that is pathetic. Why are we recruiting players that can get to the rim but can't finish or make FT's when they are fouled???

Then you add on the 21 turnovers with just 5 assists(0 in the 2nd half) and you get what happened today. Cal prides himself on defense, but the Spiders shot 59% in the 2nd half. With our length and athleticism that can't happen.

Making shots is the cure for ALL of a teams imperfections. If you can't score the ball, you aren't going to win against good teams. How can Cal not see that???!!!!!

I get what you’re saying, but it’s definitely all cal when guys like Boston are passing up wide open 3’s to drive in a little and take contested 2’s instead. And when a guy has a fast break and it’s one against three (absolutely nothing there) but he barrels into the defenders like a bowling ball, just praying for a foul, rather than making the correct basketball play and pulling it out and setting up the offense, that is the coach being stubborn and refusing to adapt/change (there are many more examples of this, I’m just giving a couple). It’s the same story every year anymore.

Ive made that comparison often as well....this basketball in game philosophy of Cals really is akin to Stoops. How the hell did it come to this. We need shooters. We need a QB who can toss it around.

Saban saw the change in college football and adjusted. A 2011 Bama would not win the title in 2021.

I do think that is part of it. Cal has to break these kid’s bad habits and build them healthy habits, which takes time.

It's a cutting edge offense if the year is 1984.

In all seriousness, it looks like we are relying on our defense to create offense. What we saw today is what happens when the defense doesn't get stops or turn the other team over. Our freshmen look like they have no idea what to do in the half court, and we have roughly 3 total plays to run for Sarr.

Cal has always been offensive rebounding and getting to the line.

That's been our offense since he's gotten here.

And it's worked. There isn't anything wrong with that.

They turned it over on 27% of their possessions Sunday. You can't do that and expect to win or expect to be efficient on offense when 1 in 4 possessions are coming up not only empty but without a shot even.

Can't rebound a miss or make a shot if u can't even get one off.

THAT is what the issue was.

The U of K ......... where all sports' offense comes to die.

but dont worry, we have bruiser and justus helping Cal out with offense..... *vomits*.
A lot of us said Cal had a chance to go get an offensive minded assistant when Payne left. Instead he brought in another defensive one with Bruiser. Cal is more stubborn than Stoops and that's saying something.

A few random thoughts
1) why did our offense look fantastic in the middle of the summer when we played over seas with Herro’s first appearance ? There was spacing , ball movement , shooting . Etc etc ... then by thencaa tourney time it was drive drive drive , get fouled .

2) how in the world did we not constantly feed Oliver in the post in the late first half / entire second half .

3) how did we play near an entire half and not get many clean looks ( any ? ) from. Three point land

4) cals desire to trade three point shooting for drive drive drive is terribly flawed .

What disappoints me is to see the cats get beat 8 to 10 times a game by back door cuts, yet we don't execute a backdoor cut 8 times in a season, Cal's offense tends to be one on one crap, but we so far really don't seem to have anyone who can beat his man consistently off the dribble. Our ball movement against Richmond sucked was not even close to what we saw against Morehead.

The really bad part of the loss yesterday is that Richmond didn't come in and go crazy from the three. They shot awful from three. Didn't shoot that great from anywhere.
I could maybe accept the loss a little better if they had.
To me, that they didn't, is an even bigger issue.

I wonder that too for a guy who likens himself to be innovative and ahead of the curve.
The game now is shooting. His best shooter is Mintz imo. Yet he keeps playing Askew.
Makes you wonder about his intentions.

Microwave. These are high school kids playing against college players. Give them some adjustment time and we will be on our way as a contender. For the past decade plus Cal has had them ready for March. Seems a little more important than November to me. No one likes losing but I don’t see people going undefeated every year.

Watching the team on offense like I didn't know the players, which is still somewhat accurate, and just observing the team play offense, it looks like the exact same weave over and over and over just like every year. Rarely ending up in anything but a forced drive to the basket because we can't take them off the dribble and/or no one knows how to set a pick. Just insert new, skinny, heralded freshmen, rinse and repeat.

And speaking of skinny, I watched our usual skinny freshmen get handled by men (including a 5' 9" gaurd) that ran out of gas somewhere early in the second half. This doesn't apply to Sarr of course who we should have gone to the entire second half.

We'll get better of course like always but sacrificing my time to watch crap like this is getting old.

What is concerning that our guards are too slow to defend the straight line drives. Quick guards are going to kill us this year. You can’t correct slowness by March. Either you got it or you don’t.

Cal never utilizes his big men. Just look at the offensive production of Davis and Towns, both are scoring machines in the league, yet he under utilized them. He should have rode Sarr heavy in this game.

Well, Sarr and Mintz have played a ton of college games. Mintz did not get many minutes. Sorry, but those guys have enough experience in college to not use that excuse. Mintz is the best option at PG right now, but Askew is getting the bulk of the minutes.

And that is why Cal is striking out on elite Bigs now!

If the player doesn’t already know this, the opposing coaches recruiting against Cal makes damn sure they do.

This right here. Neither Askew nor Mintz seem to have the speed on either end to influence the game. Richmond's guards ate their lunch all day.
I don't remember a time that Askew broke down the defense with penetration to set up other players.
They would just pass the ball to Boston and let him try and make a play. 42 days of practice and that's what Cal came up with. Amazing.

Brand new system for those guys as well. You can't expect 100% new guys to new system to function correctly in game two. Also have you seen Mintz in practice? I'll take the hall of fame coaches decision on this one. think about that.

We shall see but Cal has never not been in the hunt other than when Noel went down. I'm guessing we will be fine by March. No reason to feel otherwise.

we were not in the hunt in 2016 or 2018. This current team has a long way to go in a short period of time considering it’s practically December already.

I disagree with your premise on those years. We are in the hunt every year. You can't have the best team every year. That would be impossible.

The 16 and 18 years are definitely debatable but to be honest with the way the bracket broke in 18, we should have made a final four even with a lesser talented team than most years under Cal.

They were definitely disappointments.

But 17 and 19 were really good teams.

What were those teams in the hunt for? What's it even mean to be in the hunt if you can't even sniff a final four, like those two teams?

When Cals UK teams score-70-or-More-UK-Is-271-27, 90.9% , when they score 69 or less they are 60-50 , 54.5% .with losses to West Virginia (2010),UConn (2011), UConn (2014), Wisconsin (2015), and KSU (2018). We also scored less than 70 in regulation in 2019 against Auburn in an overtime loss. You would think he would put more emphasis on his offense with facts like these .
