We had 21 turnovers? Omg I did not realize that. You could’ve said we had 41 and I would’ve believed it. Low energy, very lil fight but I really hope they just thought this game would be a cakewalk because if they took it serious and this is the outcome then Kansas will steamroll is.

Not only 21 turnovers, but they only forced 10 Richmond turnovers. Two of those Richmond turnovers came in the last minute when the game was already decided. But what we saw was a young group of mostly true freshman (other than Sarr) playing just its second game together against an experienced group that won 23 games a season ago and likely would have been an NCAA Tournament team a season ago returning basically everybody from last season's team. They were 32nd in both polls coming into the season and may well move into the top 25 now.

Why do people on here continue to make excuses? Cal does that enough.. don’t care how old they are.. a 5 star recruit should be playing at sophomore level at very least so hence why they are rated so high.. if they don’t then they are overrated! Don’t care if Askew is 17 then he should of stayed in HS if he can’t play with Richmond

They played like a top 25 team. Kentucky will not be ranked, and I think that’s probably about right. They seem to be in that 31 to

The turnovers is ALWAYS a problem in the beginning of the season with Cals teams.

I'm not all that worried about that because it always gets better.

But my lord why can't we get players that can shoot the ball?

Coaching is definitely a factor. Cal does not value shooting as much as other coaches. This not only manifests in who he recruits, but it also does in how he coaches. If you aren't emphasizing shooting the ball from the three in how you play and practice offense, you aren't going to be a great shooting team from 3.

Total system's failure:

21 turnovers
37% FG's
60% FT's
0% from 3P FG's

We won rebounds by 23 and still lost this game by double digits. We played absolutely awful.
Easily one of the worst box scores I’ve ever seen in 55 years of following the Cats. Especially the 21 TO’s to 5 assists, and no 3’s for only the 2nd time since the 3 point line came into existence!

So maybe just maybe by March we will be competitive. How awesome would it be just one year that we didn’t start out sucking so bad. This year may be the biggest suck of all. I don’t recall a team playing like this besides the 2013 team. This is very troublesome. We need a point guard in the worst way.

Sarr played well. Besides him. Nothing but garbage play.

Did you miss the Evansville game last year?

So could Brooks make a difference? After seeing the guys today Brooks would have to be head and shoulders above them. No way Boston and Clark are top 10 recruits. They lost the rock several times by the smaller guards, turnover machines, couldn’t throw it in the ocean.

We’re 2nd all time in FFs. They’re hella hard to get to in a single elimination tournament.

Also facts.

Ask yourself this, who will reach a Final Four first, Richmond or UK? Be honest. Put it in perspective.
This team will get better, but We have no true scores like we did with De’Aaron fox and Monk. These guys just want to do one on one dribble dribble dribble between the legs behind the back dribble dribble dribble and Jack a shot that’s heavily contested. To answer your question is it possible this team could be a final four contender, yes its possible, but highly unlikely.

If Richmond keeps playing hard and playing together like I did today, then anything that happened in a single game illumination tournament. Richmond did not play very well and rolled us easily. We had no answer anywhere.

If UK is ranked, they'll likely be in the 21-25 range. It doesn't matter, though. Cal and the coaching staff need to go back to the drawing board and this inexperienced team needs time to gel, come together, get in some good practices and just play in real games together. Having this inexperienced a team is an even bigger challenge during a pandemic when they've had less time to practice together and didn't even have any exhibition games to work out some kinks.

His offense has been such about grabbing offensive boards and getting to the line but I also feel like the game has changed. The average offensive rebounding % has gone down drastically in college basketball and while we still do well in this regard, we aren't getting that same separation anymore by doing so.

It's not often you see teams just poke it out of the big man's hands OVER and OVER. Of course, they did it to our guards too.

I think you are spot on. It’s gonna be hard to fight our way back into the top 10. Once you drop out it is really hard to get that back. We will float in that 18 to 25 range for quite some time.

Lol yes pretty much.

I’ve just been down this road like you have too many times before. We’re going to drop to about 21 to 27 in the rankings. Will fightour way back to about number 15, then we’ll lose two or three in a row taking us back to about 24 to 27. End up getting a ****** seed in the tournament, then getting beat around the Sweet 16 due to missed foul shots. Sound about right?

I think this team, this year, this game, played worse than the Evansville game. We executed better in Evansville and it was a close game, I think it came down to the last second shot?

Richmond dominated us. We could barely even pass the ball. Had our pockets picked multiple times. This was ugly, real ugly. Trying to find something positive to take away. I guess you could say Sarr played decent.

Disagree there, but we’ll see. I’ve worked hard over the last few years to get less emotional about Ls and just stay true as a fan. That’s not to say criticism is not warranted - of Cal, of the system, of the coaching, recruiting, etc. All fair. I just hate all the “burn it down” after one bad loss.

I guess we’ll find out Tuesday. If the kids can somehow find a way to be competitive and not get blown out then I guess it’s a positive. Do you think if we could keep Kansas from beating us by 10 or less it’s a win?

I’ll take all the action on Kentucky reaching a FF before Richmond, FYI.

All. The. Action.

We got rolled today. It’s gonna happen in this era early in the season. I’d also wager we will get a LOT better and be in the mic to make a run in the dance.
Why does it have to happen? Living in Indiana being a UK fan, I can tell you some UK fans are starting to sound a lot like 1990s IU fans when Knight was losing his edge. The IU mantra was always we will see you in March after their annual UK beat down. IU waited too long and look at them now.

Cal needs to adjust because these losses matter when it comes to seeding. And seeding is crucial. Get rolled by KU is one thing. Get rolled by Richmond is quite another from a perception and seeding standpoint.

Evansville ended up being awful though. In terms of stats from the game, yeah we were worse today but that doesn't account for the opponent.

The only positive was rebounding today, including offensive. But I'd guess we turned over half our 2nd possessions.

Cal recruits drivers and slashers, people who get to the line, and not knock down shooters.

Problem is, is that his slashers always suck at the line. Again, he prefers his athlete's to basketball players. A lot of us on here would prefer the latter. I'm Blue to the core, but damn Cal, we gotta score, man!

Except for last season. We were nearly an 80% free throw shooting team that year lol.

If Cal can no longer get the top two or three guys (Fox, Bam, Monk, Karl T,etc) and he can’t get his recruits to stay more than one year I feel this is the new norm. Might as well get used to it. It is what it is.

There is no way these kids that are projected to be multiple your players end up staying. It’s never happened before. I guess there’s a first for everything. We should’ve had multiple guys stay on the team from last year that left.

My reasoning for it being inevitable is in order to get the best talent available you must go after those who will exit to the NBA. It’s a different era than the 90s.

That means you are always starting over to some degree. Cal has adjusted well in my view using the transfer strategy. It doesn’t fix all newbie ills though.

We simply need more time to make any judgements on this season. Sample size too small.

This game will have precisely zero impact on seeding. Not any.

you just said if they don’t perform to the level of a college sophomore they’re overrated, they don’t rate these guys off college performance they rate them off high school games against 17 and 18 year olds not grown men in college
