They did. The same way they've interfered in every election since...who knows when. I'd say 1996 when the worldwide web really got going.
They spent a grand total of $200K doing so. I bet many other countries spent more doing their form of interference. Unless you are a simpleton and believe they are the only country that interfered or tries to interfere in our elections.
