i’ve been throwing heat at these UT fans for 3 hours now
You have to laugh at crap like this(EVEN COACH K SAYS HE'S THE BEST)K,the same coach that berated another teams player on national TV,then tried to lie out of it.whatever coach K SAYS is laughable.

The talent UCLA was getting was like taking Coach Cal's recruiting classes, and having them stick around for 4 years. They had guys like Swen Nater who rarely played at UCLA, then went on to have long successful ABA/NBA careers. Meanwhile, we literally couldn't pay guys (looking at you Butch Beard) to be the first one to go into Mississippi and Alabama. But who could blame them, based on what was going on down there at the time.

Was it Walton that said he would have rather been able to stay in school because he would be taking a pay cut in the NBA?
Duke's coach { however you spell his name } was trained by bobby knight the biggest *** hole that ever coached in the history of college basketball, so what would you expect. UCLA's success had more to do with sam gilbert's money than wooden's coaching. Any descent coach could have won just like wooden if they had gilbert's money buying the best players in the country every year. Who in the world couldn't have won with those players. It makes me sick to listen to people saying how great wooden was. It was money, not coaching. If he was so great of a coach how come he was just an average coach until gilbert and his money came along ? Before gilbert came along the mighty wooden even lost a game to the University of Evansville, that was a division 2 team at that time.

I've either heard Walton say that or read it in his bio by Jack Scott, or both maybe. Like a lot of what he says, it was probably exaggerated. They didn't really need to pay him to get him, because he grew up a big UCLA fan in San Diego. But no question their players were well taken care of during that period.
As to my comment about Beard, that is purely a rumor I've heard, that we had boosters working separate from Rupp trying to get Beard. I probably shouldn't have included that. If true, it was small potatoes compared to what was going on at UCLA, and we didn't get him anyway. It is in Russell Rice's book on Rupp (page 197) that Tom Payne had several traffic violations in his "new Cadillac" while at UK.

How’s it feel to have your best team since the 2008 team get dunked on by kentucky and to make matters worse your star point guard got 39 points dropped on him! LOL
It will forever rub me the wrong way UCLA cheated to 10 titles. Emmert and the Rooferee rub salt on the wound by preventing us from catching the cheatin' bruins.
Preach it Dan. Wooden was a great coach, and his buddy bought him a lot of players. Just tired of seeing them skate by and glorified in the media while they love to toss crap at us.
Sam Gilbert funded UCLA basketball and USC football programs.
John Wooden was a smart enough coach to let the talent perform during games, but it's a lot easier to profit off the "Pyramid of Success" when you have resources that provide material that nobody can match. Basically like being in a fundraising competition and you're uncles are Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos.
