Yet some sit on the couch with a beer and say “that ain’t good enough, he owes me more for all the hours I’ve logged watching.
Firstly I love Coach Cal and can’t think of a coach more perfect for us in his run and going forward. But to be fair to his tamer critics, he said on day 1 this was about championships. If he’d gotten a 2nd one (imo due a combo of bad luck and the anti-UK NCAA bias), his critics would be crickets.

If we're being honest... (at let me preface I love Cal and there isn't a better coach for the UK job), but he honestly should have more than one. Cal is fantastic in a lot of coaching. A HOFer for sure. But in game coaching (late game, time out usage) isn't his strong point.
What I remember him saying on Day One was that Kentucky would COMPETE for championships and Final Fours, something the Cats hadn't done in years, but which they did immediately under him, and almost every year since. Here's his first press conference. I just listened to it all. You can decide for yourself.
No ****! There is a thread started every other day it seems like talking about Cal's replacement. It is nuts. I don't know about them, but I don't think about his replacement. I am enjoying every season and praying he comes back the next year!
Like it or not, if Cal leaves with only one championship, his time here will be considered a failure of some degree by many and his legacy will be harmed.

nah the people who see him as a failure are just people that never liked him and hid behind the “i don’t hate him i just wish he would change” facade, I guess my question is were people calling pitino a failure?
Let’s get this out of the way very quickly. There is one stat where Cal hasn’t absolutely crushed the head coach position at U.K. National championships. Only complete morons that know absolutely nothing about basketball judge a coach based on one stat, especially not that one. Even considering that stat, he has one. He has been close to several others.
The man has dominated his tenure at U.K. He has done it in ways that are innovative and with integrity. We are the singular presence atop college basketball. This position has been cemented by Cal. His won loss record is but one set of statistics bearing this message.

Between that and the “chasing UCLA” comments he’s made later, I understood Calipari was more than smart enough to know the huge expectations on the shoulders of a UK coach.

I really don’t know anyone that matters that feels that way, just a few idiots. They are irrelevant to basketball so irrelevant to this conversation. It’s far more than good enough. The man has been a complete success here. Only a Pitino-like scandal could mar his performance at this point. That is unlikely. Anyone painting his tenure in a negative light is speaking louder about themselves and their own ignorance of basketball then Cal.

Sure he's had a lot of top recruits ,but he's also had great seasons in which he didn't have top echelon talent. In the era we are in where every school is tainted with paying players, it speaks on how great cal has been to never once be mentioned with those schools.

I doubt anyone would have been calling Pitino a failure. He was only at Kentucky 7 seasons and one of them we were on probation. His pace was basically what Calipari was on after his first 5 seasons. Cal has tailed off a bit since that initial 5 season flourish. Doesn’t mean he’s failing, but he’s definitely in need of another final four / championship run to get back on that pace. Pitino just left on top and didn’t stay long enough to hit a little rut.
Anyone who thinks coach Cal won’t win another championship has not been watching the same basketball that I have. He almost always has your Cats peaking at tournament time and has been knocking on the door almost every year.
Just imagine how good his record here would look if we actually got a decent, fair whistle. We get an absolute ****** whistle, not even debatable. We especially take our lumps on the SEC road, in that regard.

That to me is pretty clear: You want the "opportunity to add" championships, which Kentucky has had under him virtually every year (and has added one.) And you want to "Compete every year and hopefully add to that wall." Which Kentucky has done, almost every year under him.
I think after UMass in 96 and Memphis in 2008, Cal understood that no matter how hard you worked, how great your recruiting, there was an element of chance to win it all: In 1996 you had one of the best team of the decade, and lost a close game to the best team in decades. In 08, you had a championship won, and guys missed free throws.
What he promised is to be in the hunt every year. And mostly he has delivered.

Our average since the expansion to 64 teams in 88 to Cal: A title every 11 years.
Now someone do it for final fours, I’m sure it looks way better for Cal on that one.
I see completely where you are coming from. Calipari understood he couldn’t guarantee the future and wasn’t dumb enough to promise it.
But to me, he understood the expectations of the program and it’s focus on titles. So even though he couldn’t promise it, he knew he’d be judged by it, why else say the hope is to win titles?
I’m not call Cal a liar who guaranteed us 2 titles minimum. I’m just saying being judged by his title count is not coming from nowhere, it’s been well established from day one.
The thing is you can throw out all those numbers and they are no doubt impressive but you'll never convince the subsection on this board that doesn't like Cal with those numbers.

Agreed. Let’s not act like Cal hasn’t been screwed out of multiple titles here. Anyone that says differently, are clearly not being honest with themselves. The NCAA hates the man, that’s obvious.

True. Having agreed, that simply speaks to the lunacy of that crowd and their profound ignorance concerning basketball. It says nothing of importance about Cal.
Factor in the average age of his starting fives...even more impressive.
It bears mentioning that Cal has achieved great success at UK while maintaining a squeaky clean record of compliance, as he was tasked to do. This at the same time that many other major programs, including some so-called blue bloods, have absolutely embarrassed themselves and the NCAA, notwithstanding its pathetic inconsistencies of enforcement. I would not trade another NC for the scandals of North Carolina, Kansas, Arizona, or that other institution.
Maybe so - but I’m guessing if he were coaching experienced teams with juniors and seniors his in game coaching would magically appear to be much better....
See, I don’t believe for a second if he added another title that would end the criticism. I mean, for that season and the next couple, yes. But soon enough, the drumbeat would pick up again. Eventually, the “he ought to have more titles” posts would start to appear again. Classic goal post shifting. I have zero doubt it would show up here.
I agree but he ain't leaving anytime soon since he signed another extension, so his deal is still there, we just have to hope that there are seasons to be played so that he can win another one.
There will be a lot of people on here wishing for the Cal type years again once he retires . Then of course there will be the moronic few that say I am glad for the change !!
People had unreal expectations for the merging of Coach Cal and UK together. Clearly our 1st year with that elite talent John Wall and Cousins showed us what could be every year. Then we had AD and company cut down the nets.
The issue has been in recent years Coach Cal is not getting that top 5 player to put us over the top. He's getting recruits 6 through 50 and trying to build an elite defensive team to get us there.
Basketball with One n Done players need that generational talent to work.

I think the good thing tho is it's just the loud minority.
Most UK fans realize the job that Cal has done here.
Seems to be working pretty well. Rated best college basketball program the last 10 years. Sorry if facts get in the way of your agenda.
