Are you saying the guys he's actually training with know more about what they're doing than the folks in this thread?
I know that seems impossible to believe, but yes, I don't think his trainers and coaches are overlooking something they teach 5th graders, nor do I think he averaged 40 points a game in high school or whatever if he couldn't shoot without an obvious walk.

You know Steph Curry dips the ball before he shoots...

Dipping the ball ain't a violation of any rules, but taking that extra step before you shoot is.

I'll hopefully assume this is just a practice thing and he ain't gonna do it in games. But I'm not sure it's the best practice to allow him to keep doing it during shooting drills. Bad habits tend to become subconsciously ingrained and can be hard to break.

But I will say his stroke does look very impressive ..if he can eliminate that extra hop after the catch. Or just learn to do it a split second earlier.

How many times will he be called for a walk before his jump shot? Or am I being too critical?
Posted the exact same thing in the KSR thread of that video. that little two hop step before he shoots has to be refined.

I’m not exactly sure what the point of his hop step is in drills but I am positive Dontaie Allen knows the rules of basketball.

Someone his size and arm length (7'2") may look a tad slow. Real game action tells the truth, not practice, shooting drills. His form on his shot is pure, and his release isn't slow during the drills. During the flow of the game the name of the game is being ready to shoot when the ball arrives, like Quickley was last year. I think he will excel at those points with a little playing time. He's not worried about being a OAD, he just wants to play for his State's team and enjoy the process.

There's teh key...he'll do it right before the catch to get into his shooting motion as he's catching. I'd assume...

Interesting thing about Allen is he hit almost 40 percent of his 3s as a senior against admittedly questionable Kentucky hs completion, but went to an Under Armour event against good competion and still hit 40 percent of his 3s. In fact he led the event in scoring. Also averaged almost 7 rebounds and 5 assists a game.

Exactly what many people are missing. This particular event showed what Allen can do. Just hoping he can recover from his injury and get back to his game 100%.

2-3 points/game.

Those of you projecting more than that must be counting on Boston or Clarke getting injured this season.

That is the very first thing I noticed. In the SEC, with the officials we have, he will get whistled at least once a game at minimum. Knowing our luck, most of the time it will be when he hits a big 3.

Those little hop steps might get him some traveling calls.
He doesn't demonstrate the ability to position feet for the shot AS he is catching the ball, reason for why his feet look a bit extra busy. Good shooter needs to have the appearance of coming off of one foot as he catches the ball. A really good shooter is going to do this while catching the ball in one hand, slapping it with both as the two feet set for the shot. Allen doesn't do this.

You guys realize that’s just part of the shooting drill right? It’s taught to simulate catching the ball on the move and then spotting up. That’s not how he’s going to shoot in games.

LMAO

its a shooting drill...you dont need to 'simulate' catching the ball on the move. just move and catch the ball as part fo the drill! look at all the videos of askew, clarke, and boston running all over the gym (effortlessly) getting to spots to take shots. just train the right way to begin with. maybe thats the difference between pro level training and JV stuff.

allen's movement is terrible and it looks like he is still in the process of recovery. nothing wrong with admitting where you are.

Its common practice in stationary shooting drills.

It’s one short clip. I’d be willing to bet they are also doing curl and flare drills and much more game scenario type shooting drills as well.

This makes no sense. There's no need to "simulate" those things when you've got someone feeding you passes in the drill, instead you can actually do them.

I've watched a lot of these shooting drill videos over the years, but can't recall any others where it was so noticeable that the player was shuffling his feet after the catch. That's a bad habit to fall into. His stroke does look sweet, though.

Can’t unsee the player comp: Jabari Parker

Friendly reminder, comp and trajectory are different considerations.
