Why we could still end up getting Williams

I’ve heard lots of people saying we don’t need him not a good fit. I think it comes down to how comfortable Cal is with the freshman he’s scouted them more than us. Also it doesn’t help that they are not able to do much this summer and will come in without the summer work they normally would.

But if Cal did sign him it would be in a Brooks role. Jackson would be the backup C and Williams and Brooks would take PF minutes and also backup at SF. Askew and Mintz could also lose minutes if you ran a lineup with.

Sarr
Brooks
Williams
Boston
Clarke

Clarke and Boston both ran their teams offenses at times in HS. Not saying we will get him but it’s going to depend how comfortable Cal is with the other freshman playing major minutes. Also depends on Williams being comfortable as 3-4th option most of the time.

I kinda think it was Sarr or Williams, plus Anselem, hence why Sarr committed so quickly. Last I heard, Williams is supposed to announce sometime this week too, so seems like Cal told them “whoever commits first gets the scholarship”.

I like the experience Williams would bring us and the ability to play even more positionless basketball. I could see if Saar got into foul trouble going with Williams because of his passing ability to cause a lot of nightmares for defenses with the great wings we will have. I could see Brooks and Williams playing underneath but more like spreading the floor allowing Askew, Boston, Clark and others to drive more effectively. I think it is a win win situation.

Also it would allow our other young guys to take more time to mature, grow and learn the system which would benefit especially Ware, Fletcher and Jackson.

Nice evaluation. I hadn’t really thought of it that way. You could very well be correct here.

I think we get Williams. He and Sarr and Brooks start on the frontline and Mintz at point with Clark or Boston at the other guard. You cannot have too much frontline depth. Williams would be a great addition.

I don’t see either of Boston/Clarke coming off the bench. I don’t think there’s any way that happens. They’ll be our two best players. They’ll start.

The only reason to do it is if you really don’t think Ware and/or Jackson are where they need to be. He’s not the caliber of player where he automatically comes in and starts. Maybe we think he can play on the perimeter so we’re less dependent on Allen? If this team is good, it’s because Clarke and Boston are legit so those two start.

NO WAY Clarke or Boston doesnt start. 0.1% chance.

I think it depends on which freshman big catches on to the speed of the game and staying out of foul trouble first gets the most early PT.

We will add Frank A. and call it a team/class. Williams is a great player but sounds like with us adding Sarr and having a bunch of 4's already the interest isn't there as much. Bet he goes to Baylor.

But I get that unrealistically people will continue to talk about him so when he goes elsewhere we will have "lost another big "

Its like people forget we have Brooks , Ware , Jackson ( though he will be at 5 mostly ) and fletcher . There is a thing as having too much talent. We have 3 front court stars in Sarr , Jackson and Brooks.

Williams is not a need or good fit. You already have Ware, Jackson and Brooks to play the 4. Williams isn’t going to play the 5 so it makes more sense to add a player like Anselem who can back up Sarr at the 5. Insiders on this site believe they’ll add Anselem and that Williams is a bad fit.

We have 11 guys on scholarship. 9 of them are already eligible (we assume). One is expected to be eligible (Sarr) and one is expected to sit out (Toppin).

So we should have 10 playable guys. Cal has 11 available on average.

I expect us to add one more to the squad.

If Anselem is willing to come in even though he won’t play much, then he makes sense as the last piece. My concern is the rumor that he expects to come in and play a lot this season. He will be behind Sarr and Jackson at Center, so that shouldn’t be the case. He needs to understand he is a 3-4 year player. I am not sure he knows that based on some of his comments.

I cannot remember where I read this, but last night I read that we were getting another player this coming Friday. Wish I would have posted it last night.

You truly believe ONE of Clarke and Boston doesn't start? Who's your crack supplier?

I tend to agree with your logic, but it's not because of what the "insiders" are saying. They've been significantly awful for about the last 18 months on virtually every prediction.

how does anyone on here know that Williams is a bad fit....only Cal & the coaches would know that
he would add another scoring threat giving UK scoring threats from every spot
why couldn't he fill in at the center spot at times? then opponents would have to guard him outside
& open the middle for Clarke or Boston to post up
IMO, he would give UK a lot of options on offense

Catzman, that was just conjecture. I have no clue who will start but Mintz is a senior and is proven and he can guard little quick guards. You have no clue what those 2 freshmen can do as you have not seen them play. If they both start so be it. I am a Cat fan and want the best to be on the floor. We will know more when practice starts. We do know that Cal plays favorites but we will have a good team regardless of who starts. You can take your crack statement and stick it in your ear.

I’d certainly take him but I think the lineup is:

Sarr
Brooks
Clarke
Boston
Mintz (possibly Askew later in season).

My lineup at the beginning of the season:

Clarke
Boston
Sarr
Brooks
Mintz

By the time the SEC hits it's stride:

Clarke
Boston
Sarr
Brooks
Askew

Ware seems unnoticed by fans but outplayed Evan Mobley, the #1 big man and #1 overall player in the county, when they met.
I am concerned that in the 3 games I watched Ware appeared to very “unpolished” in his offensive repertoire. He plays hard and will be a high energy guy from day 1 and playing hard is a skill. Buttttttttt I hope Payne or Sarr teaches him some post moves because you can’t dunk every ball or shoot a 1-2 footer every play in college.

If Cal wants Williams, I’m good with that, but our front court seems set. Sarr, Brooks, Jackson, Ware, and Fletcher and Allen could also play the 4.

Yup looks like they were wrong lol. Anselem cut UK due to Sarr’s commitment. Hopefully Williams is still an option. Fingers crossed they both get eligible.

Arguing who plays the 4 or SG ect is pointless. What matters is how many guys are in your main rotation you can count on for 20 good minutes. Ideally you have 7-8 guys

Boston-in
Clarke-in
Brooks-in
Sarr-in
Mintz-in but not a guy that’s needs major minutes
Askew-in but may need time

That’s it 6 guys you know will be main rotation players

Jackson-could be a key rotation guy or could struggle to stay out of foul trouble
Ware-needs work could play some
Allen-coming off major injury
Fletcher-raw likely role player

Everyone is penciling in the other freshman like you can count on them for a big role but the coaches may not be crazy about that idea

That’s a good take, IMHO.

I don’t think the staff thinks all of those guys will be ready year one to contribute at a high level. If they were confident, they would probably be looking at some Freshmen with long term potential rather than immediate impact transfers to fill out the roster.

They are probably hoping one or two of Allen, Ware, Jackson, or Fletcher emerge as a solid role player to go with the experienced players (Brooks, Mintz, Sarr, maybe Williams) and the elite 5-star talent (Clarke, Boston, Askew).

How may teams, any year, have 8 guys you could play for a whole half with no noticeable drop off? We only need two of those guys to be competent enough to play spot minutes. Expecting to be that loaded consistently is delusional.

Just got finished watching the 96 tournament. Pitino played 9-10 guys in the first half alone and wore the opponents out in those games. Cal just needs to open up a bit and quit being so anal. You can win with solid depth, 10-11 players. When the second half of the season starts he gets tighter than a bulls *** in fly season and it gets worse at tournament time.
