I’ve heard from multiple people that have seen him play and believe he isn’t close to a D1 talent. Hope they’re wrong cuz I always root for the Ky kid.

I have seen this kid play a couple times in person. Was not impressive or dominant even against low level competition. Best of luck to the kid, but I think he DII or low level DI talent. There is no way he would touch the floor at UK.

Is this the kid form Inez? If so, I work with his uncle by marriage. He told me a few months back the same thing you’re saying. He said he’s nowhere near good enough to play at UK. TIFWIW.

Is he a fan of our program?

If so...

I say sign him up if has the will and patience to work on his body and skills in practice for 2 grueling years before seeing the court.

We need a KY kid or 2 every year to move through our system and turn into veterans.

Cal and staff make these kids better much like Pitino and staff could. Make this kid the next Derek Willis or Dominique Hawkins. Push him like you did Josh Harrelson.

I've seen his clips. He looks too slow to ever be able to defend man to man in Cal's system, and has a bit of an awkward slow-release shot that he'll struggle to get off against D1 defenders.

But he is big, looks every bit a legit 6'10" or taller, so at least he has that going for him.

I still wouldn't mind offering him IF the kid is willing to accept a role limited to being practice fodder and bench depth. We have extra schollies we don't use every year anyways ..so why not?

Agree. 35th best center in the class. Probably better off with Anselem.

Could be another Jared Carter, sorry to say this about a KY boy. We will PASS, on him at this time.

Carter was a 4 star too. A lot of it has to do with personality and coaching. If you look at coaches like Pitino and Calipari they have been much more successful with projects than Tubby or Coach K for example.

Don't recall, but if James goes JUCO and develops, then I would be in favor of taking him for his last two years.

But why not let him do that here? Jorts wasn't Jorts when he walked on UK's campus. He turned into that through player development and his hard work- right person pushing his buttons.

Yes, he is from Inez. I have never seen him play though, Martin County was the upset winner of the 15th region tournament this year, thanks in large part no doubt to this young man. As I understand it he will return for his senior year this Fall. First time Martin County (formerly Sheldon Clark High) has won the region in something like 35 years or so I believe. A shame they never got to play.

Yes. Also a shame Ashland didn’t get to finish their season, either. They were undefeated. Damn shame.

Bathroom stall!!!!Had BCG not have put him in that stall and taught him toughness, He never would’ve thrived in Cal’s system...[smoke] Bring BCG in as an assistant and sign this boy up!!!

The same reason we don't fill up the roster with Ky kids who are ranked 35th best at their position. If we did, we wouldn't be UK, we would be Morehead.

What might have been...

True, but, if I was one of those kids, I probably would rather come back to the 25 year reunion as the undefeated team, and say, "what might have been" than to have gone to the State tournament and been beaten in the first game. Then, it takes away from your great season.

No guarantee they get beat first game, though.

I wonder what the 1953-54 UK basketball team that went undefeated during the season would prefer. The many opportunities they have had for a reunion all these years later where they got to relive the glory days of their undefeated season or an opportunity to have played for all the marbles. As competitors, I bet they would all go with the latter.

I know nothing about this kid. But from reading the comments, I now fully understand why Danny Manning no longer has a job.

Just saw this thread.
NO
OK... I admit I am from Inez so I do not come to this without that bias. But so many on this board want Cal to recruit four year Kentucky boys to be on the team. Kentucky does not put out a lot of high level 5 star guys and if we did they are not likely to stay four years either. So this might be the type of guy from Kentucky who stays, develops maybe even red shirts and provides glue to several UK teams. Maybe even develop into Kentucky's very own, 'Big Country'! Ok, ok I got carried away there.
