"But Haarms, who saw his production diminish this past season and left Purdue in search of an opportunity for an increased role, spurned two of the current giants in college basketball to head to Provo."

We never had a good fit in a guy who was trending DOWN at Purdue. His role would NOT increase here.

it’s been kinda embarrassing how so many on this board have gushed all over a marginal, part time starter at Purdue. It’s almost Billy Clyde like...

Cal will pull a rabbit out of the hat, I'm just wondering who and when? Poor ole Justus and Barbie have a ton of work to cipher through to get players now. Not only do they have to look at all current high school players, but the possible reclass guys, the grad transfers and now the regular transfers and fight with the G-League while doing it. I couldn't imagine all the work that goes into that, if you do it right. There is a flat ton of information, meetings, calls, etc to deal with.

Those of you who are doubting whether Haarms would make much difference at UK find good support in Bozich's column today - and those demoralized by this miss should read it to feel better. Makes good points.

I do know that if Haarms came to Kentucky, he would rank behind Daniel Orton, Josh Harrellson, Dakari Johnson and Skal Labissiere among the best big men to play for the Wildcats in the John Calipari Era. There is no reason to mention the other former Calipari bigs.

So, I’ll say it one more time, I don’t know why everybody is fussing about Matt Haarms.

I think some of you just like pushing the buttons. Many on here said they like his height, I like his hustle but those two things were never going to make him a savior on next year's team. Myself it was also another 5 fouls down in the paint and again that wasn't going to make him ALL SEC. :)

Best of luck to the young man. I'd assume he'll convert to LDS? I think that's a requirement?

People don't have to be LDS to go to school at BYU.

Also Jim McMahon went to BYU to QB the football team and he's definitely not LDS.

I am a huge proponent of a strong link being established early between college and your desired profession. That is an absolute must. As a Spanish major at UK, that link did not get established, and it makes me wonder today why I allowed that to happen (I was 21, stupid, and already had a job lined up) and why UK allowed it to happen. It was surprisingly not even a standard or a goal of the UK Spanish department to make me fluent in four years, something that would have been possible and given me a life-long career-enhancing skill.

Conversely, Coach Cal does that very well. Where possible, depending on aptitude, he does provide the link necessary to get kids from school to a professional career. I am sure his tutelage helps those who never become a professional player.

Now, a comment on Haarms and today's youth. In fairness, and I always try to understand all sides of an issue, it might be fairly legitimate to determine that today's youth truly focus much more on getting to the NBA as opposed to winning a championship. Certainly, both are important if you already show the aptitude to be a professional athlete, but Haarms certainly indicates that the fit of the coach and his ability to show him the way to the NBA overrode any other factor in his decision. This leaves me truly wondering not just about Haarms but about the general thinking of today's young athlete. Given the recent decisions of kids on our team, that too would indicate more evidence that having a pro career far outweighs any importance placed on winning a championship.

Appreciate the info. I legitimately didn't know. One other question: are there rules about dating and things like that? Seems I recall a kid was dropped from the team for premarital sex?

Give me your thoughts.

Could the Reason for us missing out on all these big guys be the fact that the Big’s want to showcase their perimeter shooting and Calipari doesn’t allow that. He prefers his bigs to play on the block and do lob dunks, tap in/put backs, rebounding etc. I really think that’s why he can’t get a commitment from a big, a true Big.

I think, under normal circumstances, Cal wouldn't even have been looking at a player like Haarms. But, with no returning post players and not much signed, Cal was interested. And so was I. As you say, I wasn't expecting Olajuwan 2.0, just a rotation player.

Could be. And I've heard some opposing coaches still hammer us over Skal, platoons, guards that don't feed the post, etc. Or so I've heard. Could be.

Wrong...Jim MacMahon played college fb there, was a 2 time AllAmerican and was Catholic. It is not a requirement to play sports there. There is/was a code of conduct agreement you sign, but conversion to the church is not a requirement.

Dude had to of been mormon or recently converted to that cult.
wow Richards and Montgomery turned pro and he chose BYU? Even as a Carolina fan that is unbelievable. To possibly be a starter on a team like it will be? I have learned to respect Cal as a coach, who is BYU's coach?

Always good to have a plan B. Or is this plan C or D at this point?

All jokes aside Cal will figure something out, hell just play small ball no defense. Have every game played in the upper 80s and 90s.
80s and 90s...nooooo. would cause him to go totally grey headed:);)[roll]

There is an honor code all students agree to before enrolling. Part of the honor code is to not engage in any type of sexual activity with a person you are not married to.

In 2011, Davies was placed on probation after he admitted to breaking the honor code he had agreed to.

You know Mark Pope is a devout LDS, right? Does he act like a "cultist" to you now and when he played at UK. WOW!
Might want to calm down there, dude. This isn't the first time someone has said this type of thing. It's gonna be okay.

Sorry...was just trying to set a misconception straight. Right?...know there have been several fb & bb players that played at UK that were LDS.

I think it’s more that it was somebody to play the 5 which we’re kind of lacking at the moment. He at least had experience. I mean I’m not too broken up about it but he would have offered 5 fouls, 5-10 points per game 4-7 rebounds per game and perhaps a block or 2 every few games.

How would that "set a misconception straight"? So if LDS members played at UK that means it can't be a cult? Not following your logic here.

Jimmer Fredette. Best player in the country, had to sit out an NCAA tourney game and they lost.

It's a cult.

Calling the LDS church a cult. How original!

Got anything else in your bag of insults about magic underwear or polygamy? Wait, how about worshipping Joe Smith or a different Jesus?

If one religion is a cult, then they all are. They all have the same basic beliefs and downfalls. Except the Pastafarians.
