What amazes me is the people who actually got worked up about this. It's almost certainly two stupid kids (yes kids) trying to get attention and they got it. A $25,000 reward for putting a rope and a flag on a statue? If people would just lighten up and let it go idiots like these two would move on to something else.

Yea if only everyone could just forget about the century's of oppression and the symbols thereof that would be greaaaattttttt.
This type of hate exercise deserves to be punished and publicly discussed. The more this is vocalized and people get exposed to it the more likely they are to see how heinous the message behind these symbols is.

It's a complex scheme set up by the student paper to net 25K.

throwing eggs at a house, rolling a tree in a yard, Saran Wrapping a public toilet to cause a mess, running around in public in a banana costume being chased by a guy in a gorilla costume, etc. These are things where people are being dumb kids and trying to get attention. They are also typically trying to be funny.

What I don't get is how this even made the news
If the cops or whoever discovered this display had any common sense at all or any love for OM then they would have cleaned it up real fast and moved on. That way the university, state of MS, and south in general doesn't make the news for something terrible like this. And whatever dumbass that thought he was being cool gets his prank snuffed out before it goes viral. Am I way off on thinking that just taking care of it quietly is the obvious right thing to do here?

totally agree...the chancellor sending out open letters to students only legitimizes the actions and brings negative attention to the university. its a classic overreaction that was made because of their history. if this had happened at state, i would want to get to handle it "in-house" as much as possible. the university doesnt need to send out statements that this was a disgusting act....that should go without saying. find the culprits, make an example, and move on...dont blow it up and make it a bigger story than it is when you already have a tarnished record on stuff like this.

CL is now reporting that the James Meredith statue vandalism is now being investigated by the FBI as a 'hate crime.'
