Off topic, but how does Tim Miles not have a coaching job right now? Saw him on the BTN halftime show.

Sitting here watching the Iowa V Illinois game and have seen Orlando on the Illinois bench several times.

We need to get that dude back on the staff. We took a hit when he left.

I miss having those years when UK would win the conference, be in the discussion as one of the best teams going into the NCAAs, and have the # 1 recruiting class lined up for the following year.

Ah, the good ole days!

Not sure why you felt the need to be sarcastic. You went a totally different direction for some reason. Orlando did a lot more than just recruit.

However, you can disagree if you want to, but our recruiting and season accomplishments certainly took a hit after he left.

Number one recruiting class for 2020, including 2 top five studs. UK has won the regular season conference title. And they are being discussed by analysts and opposing coaches as one of the top teams going into the NCAA tournament.

I’m trying to find evidence of this “hit” that UK has suffered without Coach O on the staff.

The sarcasm was in lieu of exasperated sigh and head in my hands, which you could not see.

Barbee and Justus would look better in a lot of your eyes if they were on the bench beside Wall, Davis and company as well.

Duke fully jumped into the OAD game right around the time he left. Kansas had already started buying players. Arizona too.

And from what we know, you'd be insane to think all of those "why would a kid go there?" recruitments (Zimmerman, Brown, Newman, Sexton, Lonnie Walker, Bamba, etc) were because of style of play or whatever the reasons given were.

Add even a couple of those guys to the teams they'd have been on, not even counting Duke poaching kids like Bagley and Zion, and those Elite 8 losses where we couldn't quite get over the hump go a lot differently.

You think Colin Sexton instead of Quade Green doesn't change our prospects? With DeAndre Ayton at center? or Bagley? Or Bamba? What about adding Cheick Diallo or Stephen Zimmerman inside to help Skal? Jaylen Brown on the wing to go with Ulis, Murray and Briscoe?

I find it hard to blame recruiting on the assistants. John Calipari is coaching at Kentucky and players are going to Mississippi State, UNLV, etc.

So, you can't see the difference between 2015 and now?
Interesting.

Interesting.

2015 was a historically great basketball team. That’s the difference.

That team and the current one are similar in that neither featured Coach O as an assistant.

I disagree. I think it's internal. Both on evaluating talent, and developing talent.
Fair enough, you’re certainly entitled to that position. My argument would be that we’ve gone after the best players and not gotten them, and there are plenty of signs that make me question the legitimacy of their recruitment. The players we do get do improve if they stay multiple years so I don’t think we have become worse at developing talent we’re just starting with guys who are more unpolished.

The 2015 team had players on it that O recruited. You do realize that recruiting is done prior to the year the players attend the university right?

Our recruiting has dipped since O left. Anyone that denies that, is truly in denial.

Cal put in some serious work to get the guys he has coming in next year, but with O on the staff, we were getting those recruits with ease every year.

The guys coming in in 2015 had everyone worried until we brought lots of guys back.

Ulis and Booker were not Ulis and Booker then. People thought we only landed KAT because of Cal's prior history with him (probably true) and Trey Lyles was fine but not supposed to be earth shattering.

The year before we under-achieved according to all of the people here and a deep tournament run saved the perception. Before that we only had Noel, Archie and Poythress and went to the NIT.

So this notion that Antigua here = dominance on and off the court and Antigua gone = fall off on the court and in recruiting just doesn't match up. "It" started while he was still here because he isn't the factor you're looking for.

The fact that I like Orlando on the staff has a lot more to do with what he brings in the overall scheme of things than just his recruiting abilities. I think he is a guy that handles young players better than a couple if the assistants we currently have.

But it certainly appears to me that our recruiting took a dive after he left.

Doesn’t really matter, I simply liked having him on the staff, it's really pretty simple.

Last week I came very close to telling him in person, that we would love to have him back.

I was at a work think in Columbus last week, staying at the Marriott by OSU campus, and I walk out of our meeting room Wed (around 6pm) to head to my room, and there Antiqua stands talking with a couple of other assistant coaches waiting for their guys to get on the bus (I assume for dinner or practice).

I would take Orlando Antiqua back at UK the minute this season is over. Oh I see the posts we cant have him bla bla bla. There are no rules in the NCAA. Duke, NC, UL, AZ, Kansas all of them cheat in major ways,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,no punishment. The hell with this we are the only ones playing by the no rule NCAA. Hire him. Heck hire him tomorrow.

There’s no way of knowing of losing Antigua mattered or not. I personally believe Cal was just on a revolutionary role in that time and the assistants were feeding off of it. Obviously Cal doesn’t believe it’s worth it or he’d already be back. His infractions don’t really mean much. Either that, or we don’t want the reconnection for whatever reason.

I’d go with no, until Cal said yes.
