He is what he is.

If there are times he can be a net positive, you play him. If he's a negative because of his defense, you gotta sit him.

The tough part is EJ doesn't give us a ton either way. He has stretches of good defense. He had a great play in OT. He hasn't done it consistently all year.

Cats192, does getting beat on D factor in to the +\- totals?

Can a coach tell Juzang to quit touch fouling. You teach a kid to take his arms out when you foul. He had 2 yesterday that was girl like

Sestina needs to keep fighting for rebounds. A rebound is a great defensive play. He can also hustle back and get his body in the right place. He will never be a good man to man defender but his clutch stroke and ability to play power forward are huge. The lack of a rim protecting PF just makes Nick all the more valuable. Brooks brings the quickness and speed to PF but does not stretch the floor like Sestina does. Between EJ Brooks and Sestina Cal has the puzzle pieces to win on a guard oriented team. This team sure is interesting. So young that different players will struggle and thrive on different nights. It is up to Hagans and Quick to bring the consistency while the First years develop. Next year the team will have blow out talent. This year us grind it out talent.

If you consistently get beat, it's going to be worse.
I'm pretty sure it's just a measure of how many points they scored vs how many points you scored in that time.

So if he can't guard anyone and we give up more points when he's in--his +/- is going to be worse.

Yeah that’s what it is. If the score is tied, you go in, and your opponent goes on a 10-0 run, you have a +/- of -10 for that time you were in.

Anything we get positively from Sestina is a blessing. One of my favorite players who does his best every minute he's out there.

Well said. Yea, his defense isn't the greatest, but his experience is invaluable and he's a smart player. He is a true stretch 4 that will put other teams in bad situations. He's an important piece for us to get to where we want to go.

Whether he’s earned it or not, he will have to get minutes. All 8 guys will have to play from here on. Nate likely to get more minutes than Brooks at the 4. Juzang last off the bench since not a true 4 and the guards don’t sit that much.

Sestina did not play very well last night. As far as it goes, great that he hit 2 shots from behind the 3 point arch. But it took him 21 minutes to foul out of game. 5 fouls, 2 TOs, and only 3 rebounds in 21 minutes against a small team. We needed more from him. We only won because Richards played the game of his life, and because Quickley hit the half count shot right before halftime.

I would say there were many more offensive and defensive plays than you want to recognize. The defensive play by Hagans on the last play in overtime was just as important.

Nate has a knack for getting touch fouls called on him, if he can't stop doing that he just needs to foul hard each time. That way there won't be any three point plays. We have to have Nate and Juzang playing well to keep winning, both of them need to work more on their defense.

Yes late in the game his defense hurt us. He is what is he is and hopefully he can keep knocking down 3s and pull a few more rebounds

But yet, Nate was our third leading scorer last night with 8 points.
I know, I know, he’s not great on defense, but he did have one block that gave us a runout mid-way through the second half.

He has stretches of good defense.

Not many. Dude should be nicknamed Slowstina, he just has no lateral foot speed at all.

He's the kind of player that zone defenses were made for. He picked the wrong school in that regard.

Be real here who doesn’t get beat off the dribble all the time? Every single one of them - Nick sticks out for some reason
Maxey is a turnstile sometimes but wonder why nobody calls it out
They get beat at times....sure. But Maxey has checked Edwards from UGA, Isiah Joe from Ark, Nwora from UL, etc... and he's held up fine.

Sestina on the other hand can't hold down anyone. To be bluntly honest, he's the main reason we lost to Evansville...that kid lit him all most of that night and w.o EJ we had no other options. Nate is a great kid and can spot minutes with deep shooting....but he's a liability pretty much otherwise.

played much better than your giving him credit for. One of his foul calls was for the mere fact he had the audacity to raise his arms to make the shooter shot over him. He gets the worst whistle of any player we have.

Qft. Not to mention the terrible offensive screen call. He seems to be a target of the awful calls in our games. Maybe it's the refs trying to do us a favor. They are ready to make a terrible call but let us down easy by calling it on a bench player.

Just rewatched game to see who really gets beat on straight line drives or gives up uncontested back door plays. It’s like I thought Sestina is picked on for some reason and when it happens to other players we tend to over look because they look quick. Looking at last night Quickly Got beat the most.
I know Sestina and EJ are not quick but Sestina got two horrible late calls on him and EJ made a great stop late.

I agree with some fans that say Sestina at times hurts us on Defense. I will say one thing about Sestina is that he is always hustling 100% while on the floor. He is always diving for balls, does fine rebounding, good shooter and 3 point shooter. In the OSU game when we were running plays and setting Sestina up from the outside and from 3 point he went 5/8 from 3 and scored 17 points and 5 rebounds in 30 minutes of playing time. Sestina, Juzang, IQ, and Maxey all can hit from 3 and when we hit 10 or more threes Kentucky is tough to beat. His 2 threes really helped us Saturday especially the one in Overtime. Sestina, Brooks, and Juzang will probably get 15-20 minutes with having now just 8 players. We cut down on our turnovers and increase our lead when we get up 10-12 points and this team will special come March. The only thing we need to clean up is the amount of turnovers we had our last 3-4 games. If we can do this and run the offense going inside to NICK that will open the outside shot. As each year with Coach Cal we can see the team getting better and improving in Mid January and cutting down the turnovers and we can make that run to the Final Four. Coach Cal has been emphasizing to Hagans and Maxey on the turnovers and some of the bad drives to the basket. WE take care of the ball and cut down to 8-10 turnovers and this team will be dangerous come March Madness.

Sestina is there to rebound and make shots. If he isn't doing those things, the only other things he does is foul and get beat on the drive by almost anyone he guards or gets switch onto.

YouTube has the game highlights in a video showing every scoring play.

Nate was beaten by his man one time in the entire game for a basket. He was also attacked late by the guy he was guarding resulting in a foul call.

He also committed 2 other fouls against guys who had beaten their man and he switched off on them as they drove.

Nate does have trouble against quicker, usually smaller guys, often after switches. But it didn’t happen in the TT game.

I disagree, quickley had a great game, juzang and sestina contributed, and Montgomery played damn good defense down the stretch, you can’t just criticize by just looking at stats.
