Refs were not good, objectively a ref needs to call all violations they see and they missed an absolute ton of calls. Just because there weren't 50 free throws shot doesn't mean it was a well officiated game.
Excellent post. Inconsistent officiating is a blight on the game and renders it almost unwatchable. Beating, banging, bumping. I was glad to see them actually make a 10-second call even though it was on Ky. Just call the game by the book.

You wanna see ref ridiculousness, I’m sure watching the second half of the BU KU game at the Phogg will be a hoot. KU down 13, but I will bet a month’s worth of salary the refs turn it around for KU. Besides Puke, KU gets the most ridiculous home whistle in all of college basketball.

Yes they let them play, and yes they missed calls on both ends. But it was at least a pleasure to watch.

The worst part of it all is just the inconsistency. If you've been calling touch fouls then you have to call all of them the same so players can adjust. It's when you get hammered on one end, no call, and touch foul on the other end where refs can flip the feel of a game.

You want to see letting them play turn on the UL game. They just hit 3 total fouls in the game in 15 minutes.

A "little bit inconsistent" isn't an A+ though...

I give them a B. If we were Duke, that'd be a D- officiating, but because we were Kentucky and none of our guys got into a foul trouble, I'm happy with it. I'm happy anytime that happens and we can play our guys to their fullest.

They were oddly very focused on turnovers and not fouls. Maybe just practicing looking for travels, 10 second violations, out of bounds.

If you call a game by the book, there are simply too many fouls. I like it called loosely.

I wouldn't have a problem loosening the game up, but if that's what the powers that be want, they need to change the rules. Without an absolute standard by which all officials are held, you get inconsistency...sometime they call a walk, other times they don't...sometimes they call a foul on a bump, sometimes they don't...results in the perception of unfairness.
I'm an older guy. I liked the game without all the bumping, putting your shoulder into someone, slapping, etc... It was a lot cleaner. A totally different game than what you see today. Today looks like undisciplined playground ball to me.

I was actually shocked they didn’t call a foul on Richards with like a minute left.
Of course, the very next play Ashton had double the contact and even got hit in the head and it was a no-call and then Bama traveled and no call. So for being at home, I thought it was very evenly called. I wish we had a huge homecourt advantage like some teams, but today I thought it was at least consistent.

Some of those favored us.

But either way, I will take this type of officiating over typical whistle-fests any day.
i loved the flop by petty on his three attempt (finally min or so)...at first I wanted it called...but it didn't affect play.

I gave them an A+ because that's as good as SEC officials are going to get.

Trust me, I thought this through before I gave the A+ grade.

If games were really called by the book, it would result in a FT shooting contest and war of attrition. You might even have to expand the rosters so you'd have enough players to finish games.

Same deal in football if every hold was called. There'd be no scoring by the offenses.

Eventually they need to go to a 6 foul rule instead of 5 if they are going to continue to call every touch foul.

No one wants to see a foul fest so in that regard it was fine but It did get inconsistent in the 2nd half. They started blowing the whistle a lot more and you could see both sides get frustrated.

Id love to see a time come in the Cal era where our guys get to play the game.. especially with Cal being on the conservstice side with pulling guys with foul trouble..

But it will never happen.

It's so much more fun watching a game where the officials let the teams play, instead of one where the officials are looking for any excuse to blow their whistle every 30 seconds.

I hope we see more games officiated like today's ways. I don't mind a few non-calls if it gets a more enjoyable game with real flow.

I thought it was a good no-call, despite Jay Bilas' bleatings for a foul to be called.

Richards was in good position with his hands straight up and was entitled to his space. If anything the Alabama player initiated contact. To call that a foul on Richards would have been a bail-out.

A couple of things I'd like to see change.

If the foul doesn't affect the play/shot, legitimately knock the guy down, or make them turn it over then let it go. One example is if you touch a guy with two hands in the back but doesn't effect the play then play on. Touch fouls are for pansies.

Enforce the rule of verticality on shots. No more jumping into players to draw fouls. No more scissor kicks to force defenders to run into your leg. Also get rid of the flopping after the shot to get free throws.

Then get rid of the charge/block in the paint altogether. Unless you are firmly planted with both feet growing roots and get ran over maybe then and only then you can call a charge. No more having defensive position while moving side to side. That makes it to subjective.

To counter the teams that like to play ridiculously physical, make all fouls that are called 1 and 1's. No more waiting until 7 fouls or being in the act of shooting to get free throws. Punish the offenders for each foul. Also by making all fouls 1 and 1's it puts more of a premium on making them.
