I didn't hear Mack saying this, so you would have to help me as to whether you thought it was a dig at Calipari or a frustrated complaint about his defense.

But, I believe that the fans on here who generally complain about Calipari's offense don't understand offensive concepts used by Div. I and NBA coaches. I think they think of offense in terms of the movie Hoosiers - e.g. set plays, picks ("the picket fence") - basically the stuff we learned about offense and played in elementary school and high school.

When they hear Mack say that UK doesn't run a lot of sets, I believe they think he means set plays. That's not what he's talking about when he says "sets". Those considered the best coaches in the world may often only run one set (e.g., 4-out-1-in set). Their offenses are built on executing simple principles really well.
I'm not sure how to take it. He seemed pretty genuine and trying to say the right things but he never really gave any of our players or coaches a congrats for beating them. It seemed to me he was just saying we lost because of this and that of the things UL done wrong and didn't give much acknowledgment to us for doing things right.

Would you happen to have a link or be able to tell me where to go to listen to Mack's interview? I'm always interested in what the coaches say after the game, and I'm especially interested after what you advised us of.

The U of Smell will always rub off on the coaches. We’ve heard the new football and basketball coaches were “good guys”, but they can’t help themselves

Mack ran a great set on that inbounds play at end of OT. He also went to a zone on UK’s last possession of first half after we called time out. We promptly identified it and hit a wide open three to end the half. He is one of those coaches who always has to call something so people will think he is a genius.

Players don’t want to play in a slow down system where the coach calls a play every time down the court.

We don’t run any sets, every possession is 1 on 1 and our offense is rather pathetic because of it.

However, our defense has a chance to be next level and if we actually can establish some semblance of an offensive identity UK will be the team nobody wants to play in March like a lot of years past.

We don't have a team built to run a bunch of sets. Outside of Maxey we don't have any great scorers of the basketball. Really not a true dump it to the post and score guy like even UofL has. I thought Cal did a good job today on getting a couple of good looks on both a three pointer and a quick hitter to Nick. I'm not sure that not letting a team like this just run a few simple sets and letting guys make a play. Even with sets it usually comes down to that anyway.

At least some of their fans are seeing the light...

“I'm pretty much over it and don't want to play them anymore. We have an elite program but we can't compete with them head to head. It is what it is.”

Still a dumb quote.. you're not elite if there's still a team out there you cant compete with. Elite teams can beat anyone. Louisville can't beat Kentucky..

Lost what respect I had for him with this interview.

“ We couldn’t make our free throws”
“Jordan didn’t hit shots he usually makes”
“ We couldn’t make free throws”
“ The difference in the game was free throws”
“ We shoot a 100 free throws before the game”
“ Free throws”

Zero acknowledgement of our D and making excuses for Jordan “he didn’t play well” lol.

He’s saying that in a underhanded way we didn’t deserve to win because we “don’t run much”. Instead of just saying, “Give UK credit. They played well. And so did we.”

No. He crapped on our coaches and his own players to a degree. Reeks for a sore loser.
I see it as UK has a very simple offense and they were very good at it today, we couldn’t stop it.

He was specifically asked if Uk ran their offense a lot better today something like that. He didn’t just say it out of nowhere. He was asked and he answered. He’s correct btw.

I listened to the whole interview and didn’t find it all that disrespectful. He said we were well coached and complimented some of our players. Talked about the resiliency of both teams.
I listened to the interview as well and he did compliment our players. Very respectful overall in his comments.

I do and sometimes sets can be and sometimes they're game changers. Your response shows your knowledge of basketball and your IQ.
Listen SA, my response was tongue in cheek and was directed at Mack not you because he should have never made a silly comment like that especially after losing.
But, since you had to make something of it and attack my intelligence let me tell “you” something:
Cal has a revolving door at UK for better or for worse. Despite that he wins at a remarkably high rate because of multiple reasons but primarily because he gets the top recruits as a class, generally speaking.
Now, if he wins, and he has won it all and has gone to several FFs, who cares if he runs “sets” or not?
Is not the object of playing anything to win or to run set plays?

Not surprised he said that...bc he clearly didnt see the sets Cal drew up for Richards out of the timeout which they were clueless on how to stop.

And he had no clue how to adjust to the defense scheme that took their all american completely out of the game. Great work powder.

I think he’s mostly sour because he knew they actually had the talent this year to compete with us and their talent had experience unlike most of ours. I doubt they’re able to match us talent wise like this again for a long time, especially next year.

Come on CAT fans. I am not a basketball guru, nor the biggest CAL fan (I wish he would coach more for UK than just being a mentor for the kids to go pro), but CAL is as good a coach as anyone and can run all the sets he wants..... he don't do that so much. He teaches the guys to play basketball.... meaning take advantage of the situation: mismatches, poor spacing, where ever we can get an advantage. Final exams are over and there are no practice limits and also, he has had enough time to start deciding how to match the players together, who can do what and how he is going to try and mesh them together.

CAL is a great coach, just wish he was UK first.

He's salty but correct. We basically do some version of the same 3 things all game and then ad lib when the shot clock runs down or we get out of sync.

1. Run that weave at the top and if someone gets a step on their man, they take it to the rim. If they don't, someone will try to jack up a shot via a 1 on 1 move.
2. Set some baseline screens to get one of our wings free to shoot or drive (typically Maxey) while we pass the ball back and forth in the front court.
3. Pick and roll/pop at the top of the key.

Occasionally we'll work in an entry pass to the bigs out of one those "sets" or someone will goes bonkers and do something crazy early in the shot clock but that's about it.

If you think about it, it can be hard to prepare for because it allows for a lot of improvisation. However, it also leads to a lot of bad offense when you don't have guys who can shoot or beat their man consistently and finish at the rim. Either way, just like the football game, U6 knew what was coming and couldn't stop it.
