I think we’re in real trouble this year. Shooting will be a huge issue, rebounding even a BIGGER issue. Hate to say it but Nick Richards is not our guy, he has NO ALPHA personality in him to take over or dominate a game like he should. He has done skills but any team with a solid big man will negate him with ease. EJ seems to be in the same mold as Nick, too easy going and no nasty streak. We truly need a Karl Townes, Kidd-Gilchrist type big to take the reins and we don’t have that.

Well we rebounded 40% of our misses last night........so that wasn't bad at all lol

once EJ returns tho that will also be helped somewhat.

As far as not good shooting............we don't really shoot good many years under Cal.

Our offense is mainly rebound misses and get to the line.........and we definitely been getting to the line

We certainly need a consistent version of Nick. In fairness he was hurt vs Michigan St and didn't put up many points but played excellent defense. He is avg 13ppg and 7.5rbs + 1block...not to mention countless changed shots at the rim.

I'd take a consistent 10ppg and 10rb per game out of him all day long if he can do it consistently...which I think he can.

It is hard to hate on Nick right now, this is far and away the best we've seen him play during his time at UK....heck he only has 4 TO's and 10 fouls all season in almost 28mpg.

I'll be honest, he has been our best player through 4 games.

When this season started everyone was worried about Nick and EJ. EJ hasn't been healthy and Nick is playing very good. Get EJ back and healthy, contributing and we should see some progress. I still think this team has good shooters/makers. They are playing a bit timid now and are short handed. It is gonna get better.

Two things, Kentucky recruits on potential and they very rarely get it wrong. Compare all of our recruits to any other schools recruits in the NBA and it’s clear that the staff know what they are doing. It’s unfortunate that we don’t yield the greatest benefits of this process and that the NBA does. I hate the annual rebuild, reload model. It’s just as taxing on the fans as it is the coaches and players,

I’ve learned over the last 10 years to not judge a Kentucky team until late February. Matter of fact I rarely watch the early season games anymore. By later December they’re starting to show signs of who they will become. Certainly less frustrating and painful this way!

Yep team is way different in March always.

I know I'm different and I hate these close games against weak competition but I will say there is something to following these kinda teams all year long and see the development process. You see how they develop and once the light does go on, it's awesome to watch.

It is very hard to judge our potential at this point. It is easier to judge things we see that are problematic. After his first super duper game, Maxey looks like an inexperienced Freshman trying to be a star. He is taking bad shots, he sees Hagans drive to the basket and decides the next time down the court he is going to be a one on one player and with Utah State's defense packed in drives with 3 defenders in front of him to get his shot blocked and a fast break score on the other end for Utah State. Cal pointed out his mistake with Evansville (again a hero shot, but this wasn't where Kentucky had a lead and a miss might could cost the game).

Whitney frequently is out of position and instead of taking the midrange shots that he is pretty good at, does that once in a while and then again takes bad shots in fact early in the shot clock for no reason. Hagans wants to steal the ball and that's fine on occasion but also then allows the player he is defending a clear line to the basket. Others get lost on defense, Sestina is being forced to play out of his best position with EJ on the bench and Brooks gets lost on defense, etc. Juzang is supposed to be our best shooter but his shot drifts to the side of the basket.

We also see several players stepping on the baseline, walking with the ball, and so on. We had a ton of unforced turn-overs in the games and so not even an offensive attempt. Many of these things are correctable over time and with more shot attempts there would be some more points.

The surprise is out defense is not as great as was expected at present. We see the other teams have ease in driving the basketball right to the basket. That is a correctable issue as well which will eventually have a positive impact.

There is hope.

Thanks for all theses asanine responses. I’m just stating the obvious but I’m basing my critique of nick on the past 2+ seasons. He IS SOFT. I hope to GOD I’m wrong and will eat crow if necessary but I just fine see it happening with Nick. EJ is still an open opportunity

I don’t disagree this could be a long year if we don’t start playing a lot better, but of all the guys to pick on, Nick? He has 2 double doubles. He’s looked better than he ever has. We’re 13-61 from 3. Nick hasn’t taken a single one. The last 2 games we have more TO’s than assists, and Nick had 1 TO. We would have lost last night without him. Nick is not the problem.

Absolutely. OP is way off base and a nobody that has been posting a lot of negative stuff on the b-ball and football forum the last week. Hmm.

Give it some time. If it's still like this in January, you can remind everyone. I think evaluating any team for a season is too harsh. For a game, fire away.

Nick Richards has been the best player on this team through 4 games. Most consistent on both ends. Some will laugh at this but if he plays all year like this--he's an NBA player. 6'11 guys who can switch/defend pick and roll that well, make shots/make FT's and run the floor are valuable. He's been a better offensive version of WCS through 4 games. I'd say him hitting that baseline jumper when Utah Valley cut it to 4 and nobody wanted to shoot and then his tip in off Hagans miss were clutch/alpha plays. I get what you are implying in terms of natural aggressiveness and doubting he can sustain it because to this point he's not shown that-but he's played through a nasty ankle injury we all saw and was vital defensively in Michigan State win. Put up good game against EKU. He played as well as anyone in Evansville with a +8 in game he was limited by fouls and 21 and 10 when it was needed is something Nick couldn't do last year or as a Fr. All we can go off is how they are doing--so far he's least of the team's issues.

What they need is to be full strength and develop their identity/roles when they have full rotation. Do I think this is a top team in Cal's tenure? Not at all but in this year's CBB I do think they can contend if they are full strength.

Does it or could the fact that Hagans, Maxey and IQ can all get to the rim and either fini, get fouled or both and make free throws, off set the bad 3 point shooting to the point we take less than 10 a game?

Winning is all that matters and after 4 games we are 3-1.

Which would be acceptable if the 1 loss was to MSU.

And OP is smoking too much POT if you ask me.

We beat #1 and controlled almost the entire game on a neutral court and a huge stage at MSG. The last two games we have looked like a different team, but what has changed? Was Mich St and EKU the flukes or Evansville and UVS? The thing that has changed is we were at full strength to start the season. (Of course besides Allen) EJ wasn't impressing anyone, but he's a tall body and a returnee. Not to mention I imagine the guys miss them in practice badly. Then Quickly sits down who had just led us in scoring the last game. Not having these guys in games is bad enough, but not having them in practice seems to have taken the edge off this team.

After I see all 9 back together again for a few games I am not going to dismiss the first two games and latch on to the last two. If any other team was down to 7 scholarship players for a game it would be a huge deal, but it's hardly mentioned with us. This is a new team that got used to their routine and then that routine changed drastically. They are still figuring each other out. Last night every guy out there was new except 2 and they carried us. This team needs to get healthy and just grow like Cal's teams usually do and we will be just fine.

The OP is right that there a few concerns with this team. Shooting, offense, and rebounding being the biggest issues. His criticisms of Richards are off base and foolish. First, he states after watching 4 games this season and then changes his tune to judging Richards over the last two years. Just a lot of bouncing around there.

To be honest...the bad 3-point% is about taking bad shots...

Yes we've missed some easy ones...but we've taken some atrocious looks. Doesn't look like some of them know where to be at times and where they're most comfortable. Also the wrong guys are taking them...

Maxey just needs plays run for him and learn how to create off the ball. I think he's so used to having the ball in his hands and creating off the dribble...but college is much harder.

Quickley needs more shots and probably some set plays from deep.

Sestina is just tired from playing more down low than he'd like...getting worked on defense. Once EJ is back...I'm betting you see some more plays to get him open.

Juzang? Just needs a game where he can let it fly...but since the last 2 games have been close we haven't had a chance to let him play that way.

He's a troll and an idiot.
I’m not a troll or an idiot SIR. I’m a former football player at UK and I’ve paid my dues to criticize on here or ANYWHERE else I decide to.... Ive left more blood, sweat and tears on Commonwealth Stadium field than 98% of the folks on here.
You’re all praising Nick for his play against a couple of teams that are TBH, hot garbage. If you read what I said I think we’re in TROUBLE when with play teams with a post presence. If we don’t improve DRAMATICALLY we’re gonna get CRUSHED by LOUSEYVILLE(and I HATE THEM) and numerous teams on or schedule. Some of you SO CALLED EXPERTS are kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

How’d UK fare against Tillman from MSU? Heck of a post presence and they got the W. Nick played great defensively in that game as well. Richards is the least of my worries through 4 games

I’ll agree I know a little more about football but I’ve been a KY fan for 55 years SIR. And what I DO know(MORE THAN YOU) is about athletes, athletes personality and playing UP to their ability vs. their talent. I’m saying in 2+ years Nick HAS NOT played UP to his talent level. He’s NOT been a ‘leader’ on that floor this year, which in his 3rd year he should be. He should be leading by example, pouring it out on the floor. He’s or eldest player, (excluding Sestinahe’s really a first year player in the system). I just don’t look at a game result from a player. I look at in game body language, demeanor and results. To me ACTIONS speak louder than words. There’s a reason Nick is still here and NOT gone to the league. He does NOT have that drive or ALPHA DOG personality YET to make an impact night in and night out, and I still don’t see that to get him and OUR team to the next level.
For all you blue eyed goggles wearers, some of you know this is accurate.
The rest of your are just attackers and flamers, who are entitled to your opinion but....you can’t see the Forest because the trees are in your way.
We have an exciting, fun to watch team with some talent BUT if Nick Richards doesn’t step up his game SIGNIFICANTLY, ( he’s the key this year), it’s going to be another year in which we fall short of our goals....

Nick Richards
13.8 PPG
7.5 RPG
63% FG %
85% FT%
That's a pretty significant improvement over his numbers from last year. Also, the guy only has 4 turnovers thus far, which was an issue for him last year. I'm not saying the guy is a world beater, but I'm encouraged by his improvement. He battled hard inside against MSU. Personally, I'm more concerned about Hagans and Maxey being a combined 5/27 from 3 PT range, against all these hot garbage teams you reference.
