Worst shooting point guard you can remember

My pick would be Sean Sutton. I remember defense backing off Sean at the foul line. Not his fault, he was a good player but not a D1 point guard that his dad wanted him to be.

A close 2nd would have to be Hagans. A horrible looking shot with horrible results. A good defender with poor offensive skills. Talk of the NBA is hopeful, not realistic.

It’s Wayne Turner, and it’s not even close. The difference was, when he took it to the hole, he made made the shot.

Wayne may not have had a natural position, but he was a winner and didn't cause harm. My vote is Archie (if he was considered a 2). Second place has to go to the worst passing guard I've ever seen on any level, Nick Young.

Wayne Turner for his career at Kentucky shot right at 49% from the field and 32% from three. His free throw shooting was awful for a point guard at below 63%. So, he is nowhere near the worst shooting point guard Kentucky has had. He was not a great jump shooter but he took a lot of higher percentage shots closer to the basket that he was excellent at converting.

Turner was bad early on, but he became a very good shooter by the end of his career.

Early on though yea, I'd have to agree that Turner was a problem - I think part of the reason however is that Turner stayed multiple years and ingrained himself into the UK legend. Who will really remember Hagans shot 10 years from now, much less his name unless the team wins big.

In retrospect we haven't had many good shooting point guards in past 30 years. Ulis and Ford were good and great. Epps was decent and definitely was clutch. Besides that the list if any is minimal.

Turner and Rondo, but they were exceptional in other facets of the game so it made up for their lack of shooting ability.

Briscoe, Hawkins and Rondo were all throwing it up and praying. If it went in for any of them it was luck not skill.

Umm ...Sutton was a 44 percent career three point shooter. In case you weren't aware, that's awfully damn good.

And he also became an outstanding college point in his years at Oklahoma State after he left UK. He absolutely was the "D1 point his dad wanted him to be", and then some.

Good point on Hawkins too. I’ve said from the beginning, that’s what Hagans needs to aspire to be. Cliff Hawkins. I think his game most closely resembles Hawkins game.

Hagans is a much better shooter than Rondo or Turner. You only had to see the jerky, hitchy shots of Rondo or Turner once to know they were never going to be good outside shooter without major revamp. Hagans has the mechanics right now to be at least an average 3pt shooter.

Based on what I saw it was practice all-American Josh Carrier. In theory he could shoot. In reality, notsomuch it sure seemed.

Turner could occasionally make that 15' pull up, but his best asset was nobody could stop him from getting to the rim and he either finished the play or make some wild crazy pass that made you think how the hell did he do that.

Isaiah Briscoe. Not even close.

Hagans actually has a nice shot, which is why he is good from the line. He just isn't consistent from the floor and he struggles finishing in contact. There is a big difference in that and being a bad shooter.

It would have to be either Isaiah Briscoe or Wayne Turner. And as far as Ashton Hagans goes, he misses so many shots inside 5 feet. I've been wondering if Jared Prickett has been teaching him how to shoot layups.
Heck I'm wondering if Prickett hasn't been teaching the entire team how to shoot layups. Prickett couldn't make a layup & with this team if it's not a dunk, then it's a miss.

Hagans shot is fundamentally sound though. It's just consistency and being tough and strong enough to finish thru contact. That is where Briscoe excelled, but he had horrible shooting fundamentals.

I am old enough to remember teams simply leaving Roger Harden alone at the foul line. We've had a number of points that simply couldn't shoot very well. You'd have to think the way the game is changing that's a dying breed.....

Don't know about Kentucky, but in 1928 there was a point guard at Rutgers named Quency Magoo who was pretty bad at shooting.

Rajon Rondo

49.3% from the field
28.3% from 3 point range
57.7% free throw shooter

Ashton Hagans

45.4% from the field
24.1% from 3 point range
75.5% free throw shooter

Rondo couldn't shoot...but I think took smarter shots.
Hagans can shoot...but takes awful shots...the freethrow % shows he has it...

Hagans also shot 34.5% from 3 in conference play last year...which was when he was actually playing the most.

Prickett averaged 7 rebounds a game on year I think on 900 self-rebounds.

But how many shots per game did he take?

He averaged 6.2 shots per game which equates to 932 field goal attempts in his career. I do not claim he was a great shooter, but to say he was historically awful is unfair in my opinion. He has a better career field goal percentage than John Wall and shot virtually the same percentage as Wall from 3 point range (Wall is ahead 0.006%). And by the way, I am not saying Turner is a better player than John Wall. I am only trying to point out that Turner gets a bad rap, mainly in my opinion because of his ugly and lackluster free throw shooting. All he ever did at Kentucky was win and he has two championship rings to prove it.

Saul Smith. He had no business playing Division 1.

I don't remember it that way at all. In fact I remember several deep clutch game winners from Hardin.

Right or wrong, but my mind tends to qualify someone’s shooting ability to begin at minimum 10-15ft. Layups and under the basket stuff definitely boost percentages for these guys who all scored a on a high volume of layups in their careers. I’d love to see the advanced percentages on some of these guys we’ve listed from the 10ft to 25ft range.
