Kids terrified me that I had AIDS way before I started having promiscuous sex. Or shooting IV drugs.
It’s too cold and windy to sit outside with the baby, so I did the honor system deal and set a big bowl of candy out on a garden table.
It’s interesting watching from the side window how the kids approach it. Most, surprisingly, responsibly pick out a couple pieces of their favorite, and then move along.
But every fifth or sixth kid is the little ******* who surreptitiously looks around to see if anyone is watching, and then quickly fills up by the handful before sprinting away.
I’m sure those kids will make great lawyers someday.

I've never seen my kids bring home so many full size candy bars. I guess that's what they mean when they talk about the trickle down effects of a strong economy.

-Really did not take into account how much the puppy would hate kids in costumes knocking on the door every 90 seconds. Puppy also went berserk when my daughter wore a fake wig/mustache combo for her costume. Treated her like a burglar, basically.
-Love Christmas music as much as anyone, but tried it for about 90 seconds today and just couldn't do it.

It has kind of flown under the radar, but Deadspin is effectively, well, dead. Every sports site is turning into Bleacher Report and it genuinely sucks.
I used to read Deadspin regularly, and still click on it out of habit pretty much daily, but it’s been horrendous for about 2 years now. The amount of actual sports information on that site is almost non existent. Clicked on it the other day to see who won game 7 and it was nowhere to be found - had 2 articles talking about Trump being booed in game 5 though[eyeroll]

I don't really understand the outrage. New owner wants the SPORTS SITE to try and stick a little closer to sports, while also giving a pretty wide leash for other stuff (pop culture, politics, etc) if/when it intersects, as it often does.
So, everyone quits b/c they can't just write/speak unchecked about whatever political **** they want to write about...on a SPORTS SITE? So, pretty much like any other job, in that you are expected to follow company directives?

I cringe when I read folks in here celebrate the downfall of traditional sports journalism. The newspapers, ESPN, weekly magazines....that’s where you find the most actual sports coverage. Or used to, anyways.

-Richards in a walking boot yesterday at practice. Tuesday is going to be tough sledding without him, if just for 4-5 boards, a couple blocks, and extry fouls. Hopefully we're bombing.
-Journalist are whinny bitches. What's new? Helluva time to quit a paying job, though. Way to show 'em, Ethan. Enjoy writing names on coffee cups, I guess.
-Trying to hold firm to no drink Monday, Tuesday, Thursday but with WS making pumkin pie and that weather it was tough to not crack open a high proof bourbon. Held off though, nice glass of (I assume) organic milk instead.

Deadspin has never been just about sports. The "stick to sports" ******** is - and always has been - ********. It basically means "stick to sports or political views I agree with." People can at least be intellectually honest about it.
Yeah - Sports Illustrated has basically turned into fan blogs written by semi-literates. That's depressing as hell if you grew up reading it.

I can honestly say I would not want to read a sports blog that talked about politics as much as Deadspin did, even if it were my politics they agreed with. The stick to sports thing is two-fold. First, most people actually do want to just hear about sports when they visit a sports blog. Secondly, if you're going to write about politics on a sports blog, you better be good at it. Deadspin was convincingly not good at it. Ham-fisted Orange Man Bad articles are only different in the degree of pretension from Barstool articles that OWN THE SJWS!!
The majority of sports fans want politics separated from sports. The only people who don’t are:
sportswriters- who want their jobs to appear more important and serious than they actually are
athletes- self-aggrandizing
Woke Twitter- millennial nutjobs with an outrage fix
Most of us just want to enjoy sports for what they are. Why the hell should I care what high school educated LeBron James thinks about international politics? Why should I care what Kyle Tucker- a guy I only follow for his UK sports access- thinks about our president?
We don’t. ESPN has showed just that. Their ratings dipped as soon as they went political and have climbed since the new sheriff came to town.
And it may be different if the three groups I mentioned above wanted conversation, but they don’t. They want groupthink, outrage, condescension and shaming.

I didn't like everything on there (including a lot of the political stuff), but we're running out of places where we can read thoughtful, offbeat sports pieces. Like that story about the Kentucky croquet players who won the national title back in the 80s ... which was posted on Deadspin.
Drew Margary’s annual a) shitting on the Bengals and b) shitting on the Williams-Sonoma catalog were must reads for me.

Agreed, but there was still a lot of stuff on there I liked - thoughtful PRO RASSLIN journalism for example. The site could definitely be a little too woke, but I just scrolled past those articles because that's a thing you can do apparently.

The other part of it is, the Gawker network already has sites devoted to politics, so if I wanted to read about politics, I would just go there.
Still, we should all be grateful to Deadspin for the work they did on the Manti Te'o story as well as this insane rant from the Little Rock baseball coach. Only problem was those pieces were getting fewer and farther between.
Drew Magary was funny. I mean if you go to the deadspin site now there literally isn’t a single story worth reading - not one - the first 25 articles are pure ****. Not even an article with NBA highlight vids or any damn thing.
It was actually already in a pretty big hole and the ownership was basically only looking to make a move toward profitability- which includes the addition of annoying advertising methods and pretty much removing the outlier stories that not many people would find interesting. I thought they had some decent pieces over time but I highly doubt with the competition out there that their little niche stories carried much weight in the world of drawing clicks and getting people paid.
I have no real issue with a business owner trying to gear their investment toward not losing money... there is nothing stopping any of those people from blogging on their own and writing the same stuff... and if it garners enough attention- profiting from it.
