I'm a huge College Basketball fan in general, but the only team I root for is DUKE.

NOW, I love watching other teams play, just because I love the game.

Here's my question: do you pull for any teams where you have no personal or geographic connection?

That's what I don't get. You see people listing teams from all over the place and you have to wonder if there are any real connections to teams on such a diverse geographic list.

I went to UL, and have been a UL bball fan ever since. I grew up in Ashland, Ky, and one of my sisters attended Marshall, so I have both geographical and family ties to MU. Plus, the resurgence of the Marshall football team after the tragic airline crash of '70 made a great story, easy to get caught up in if you were local and had any enjoyment of CFB.

UK is my outlier. I became a UK bball fan in the 90's as a way to stay connected with my dad. Why dad was such a big fan, you'd have to ask him, but he died in '07. As I became a UK fan watching games with dad, I also came across Jon Scott's incredible page, and learned much of UK's history, which was fascinating. So it all stuck, long after I lost my dad.

I may have come to being a UK bball fan in an uncommon way, but I've been faithful ever since........

Well, put me on your list then. I'm a fan of the basketball team, not the University. Couldn't care less what the FB team does. Or the baseball team, the rifle team or any other UK team except I once had a passing interest in the volleyball team some years ago, but only then because I knew one of the assistant coaches.

I didn't attend UK, and have no connection to the University that might lead me to being a fan of all its teams.
You didn’t say what college fb team you follow

Being a WKU alumnus, I will always pull for my Hilltoppers. Unless of course, we end up playing UK. Then depending on where I am in the Commonwealth I have to be kinda neutral. Lol.

That being said, I will always pull for Murray or WKU. They are local teams and I want them to do well. As for UofL, only time I pull for them is if they are playing Duke or UNC. And I don’t really root for them but my dislike of Tobacco Road far outweighs my dislike of UofL.

NCAA- UK or WKU (unless playing UK)

MLB- Braves (always have been always will be)

NFL- was a Cowboys fan growing up, but then they got into some trouble with players getting arrested and the admins turned the other way, so I became a Packers fan for a long time because I liked Farve. Once the Titans came to Nashville I had to pull for my local team. I’ve been a Titans fan ever since- and lol, that’s not been easy for sure. But I love McNair (God rest his soul) and Eddie George.

NHL- not much of a hockey guy. But I’ll root for the Preds as they are local. Hockey is definitely more fun in person than on TV.

NBA- meh. I really don’t have a favorite team. I like to watch the Warriors, but if a UK guy is on the team I’ll pull for them a little bit. I used to like Lebron, but ever since he went to the Heat all those years ago, I haven’t cared for his attitude. He’s still a great player, but I just don’t care for him as much. Unfortunately. with AD going to the Lakers, I’ll have to root for his team. Ugh.

Kentucky basketball and Miami Hurricanes Football are my life equally . I literally have my house in half decorated in Miami and half in UK . My parents went to UK but I have lived in Florida most of my life and saw Miami win 2 titles in person( 87 and 2001 )

I also love the cubs in terms of baseball and the Jags in the NFL .

Could become a Grizzlies fan if they trade Gracie
I like the Colts but not a rabid fan.
New to hockey, but enjoy seeing the Preds win.

Anyone who grew up in Ky (UK Fan) who permanently moves away has to have other teams they follow.
...So I chose hometown Wake Forest (for my Kids to have a local)
...And anyone who plays UNC tonight

I can’t wait to finish pilot training so I can move back to Colorado Springs. I miss it so much. Beautiful place to live with a lot of friendly people.
I came here on a road trip in August of 1977 with a friend who had aspirations of getting into the Academy. No small task. He didn’t, but went on to pilot an F18 hornet. Went down to Holloman once and got to sit in the front seat. I was like the 9 year old who once sat in the cab of a D9. My Vette at Bandimere was as close as I ever came. Hike the Bahr trail if you haven’t already. And put an 80 lb pack on your back for good measure. It’s only 26 miles.

Haha I’ll pack with snacks and drinks and my side arm for good measure (mountain lions were in the area we did survival in) and hike that trail for sure. Only basic essentials. If I go camping/hiking I like to pack light. Survival though they made us pack them to 80 pounds. That wasn’t the part I enjoyed lol

My “other” team... hmm, I guess the Women’s Mexican Bobsledding Team. I believe they’re currently inactive, but I occasionally check to see if they have started practicing for the Olympics.

Has anyone ever switched teams, for whatever reason?

Yes, in NFL. I lived in Washington, DC during the 1980s and early 90s glory days of the Joe Gibbs Redskins teams and was a huge fan. Then they got bad and I moved away from DC and switched to my second favorite, the New England Patriots.

Do you still support Penn State?

Man I’d hope not.
I do. Still support the players and new coaches there, yes. Obviously, extremely embarrassed with what went on with the old regime and staff, but don't think the kids there now should be held accountable for the actions of a few absolute POS.

That’s what probation and death penalty is supposed to do. Look at Louisville. No one there anymore but the current athletes are paying for it

Not sure the current athletes at Penn State are paying for it anymore as they have been bringing in top 12 classes for the past 5 years. But I understand your point. The football players were given the option to transfer right after the sanctions came out, but many of them stayed.

NCAA- UK of course. Born and raised in Kentucky. My dad is a UK fan. Also a WKU alum, so I root for the Toppers (unless they play the Cats).
NFL- Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the early 80's all my friends liked the Cowboys, Niners, or Skins, so I started pulling for the underdog Bucs. My 7 year old son likes the Bengals because he likes tigers and their helmets are cool, so I kind of pull for them because he likes them.
NBA- Don't really have a team. Don't really care about NBA teams, more into individual players. Grew up during the Larry Bird era, so I liked the Celtics. I was a Suns fan in the 90's when Barkley was there.
NHL- Nashville Predators. Don't watch much hockey, but they are the closest team.
MLB- New York Yankees. My brother gave me a replica Yankees helmet when I was little, which I hung up on my bedpost, so they were my team. I use to like the Reds as well, because of Johnny Bench. I have been to a Reds game. Don't watch MLB much anymore.

I live near Bowling Green, so I am starting to get into the Hot Rods a little. I have only been to two games, but they are fun to watch.

There is history to everything. I was born in an Indiana suburb of Louisville in 1956. As a Hoosier and as one from my era there were only two sports growing up: MLB and HS basketball. And since CBS owned The Yankees they were on TV almost every week of my youth. So they have always been my favorite team. HS basketball did not overlap baseball but there wasn’t a lot of space in between them for other sports. Eventually the NFL began taking some of my interest. But again it was the local TV that drove my favorite, The Browns. Somehow they were the local team to Louisville for CBS. In time the Colts came to Indiana and the Browns went to Baltimore. So now I am: Colts, Yankees and still a HS fan. Everything else (especially the NBA and soccer) can go away.

I really wished Penn State self imposed a death penalty for a year. It would have sucked, but personally i would have totally respected that.

1. UK basketball
2. The Bengals
3. The Reds

I haven't followed the Reds closely since the '90s, but I know the team's entire history like the back of my hand.

I keep up with the NBA but I'm not really a fan of any team.
This except for the NBA part. I don't care at all about the NBA.

UNLV. Tupac used to rock a lot of UNLV gear. I don't even listen to rap much anymore, but was a big Tupac fan for a minute when I was younger.

Panthers. Braves. Kinda like hometown teams.

NBA. I just watch. Hornets fans..lol I don't see how they do it. Franchise is terrible

Other than Kentucky I only cheer for the military academies. West Point (army), Air Force, and Annapolis (navy). If Air Force plays any of the other two I cheer for AF because I went there for 2 years.

For all the talk about the treatment of college athletes I haven’t seen any hearts bleed for the young men and women at these schools who have signed up to serve their country. If you think college athletes should be further compensated, the military academies is where it should start imo.
Nice! I thought I'd be the one who said a service academy here (West Point). Nice to see at least one other post about them!

You didn’t say what college fb team you follow
Actually I did, in my first post on this thread. For CFB, it's the Marshall Thundering Herd. Saw them beat the snot of BYU in the 1999 Motor City Bowl in Pontiac, Michigan, probably the most enjoyable CFB game I ever saw. Marshall won 20-3 and the game wasn't nearly as close as the score would indicate. The Herd had two long TD's called back on penalties.

But what really made the game for me was a sequence of three offensive plays by BYU. From their 20, the QB threw a long pass complete for about 50 yards, but paid for it by getting hammered into the turf immediately after letting go of the ball. Next play, he dropped back to pass, but before he could backpedal more than 3-4 paces, got hammered by a Herd linebacker who blew through the O-line. Next play, same result. That made three consecutive plays where the BYU QB got pile driven into the ground. He was absolutely pancaked on all three plays. He jumped to his feet and slammed the football off the back of one of his own linemen!!! It was hilarious to watch.
