And not for nothing, but the ACC will be fairly strong at the top next year. VaTech lost players, they'll be down.. but they'll still have to play Duke, UNC, UofL, Virginia.

If I'm a guy who has one last chance to show out and NOT have losses/bad performances against good teams... ACC would be my last choice.

So you're going to stay at a non-basketball school, who just lost 3 of it's best players, in hopes that you show out enough for the NBA, and can make the NCAAT, going up against 4 top15 teams? Yikes.

Some may be looking at this all wrong. It already came out that it is a requirement for the place he calls home to have the graduate program that he wants to do. Has anyone thought that maybe he wants to get his degree and realizes that another year to age isn’t going to increase his chances at making the NBA? Not all good college players are NBA players. Time and time again a great college player who has excelled against those type of teams you mentioned has not gone on to the NBA. This is clearly another case of that.

His team winning has nothing to do with his NBA status either. If scouts find people at mid majors, they will find KB. They know who he is. Heck, everyone does by now.

I don't see how anyone can take that to mean he is going to stay at VT. Bizarre take IMO.

I can see it. I can also see it being a sort of legitimate call to the fanbase to show Blackshear some love.

I scrolled down the assistant coach's Twitter feed and it doesn't look like there's much clever stuff going on. Pretty much rooting for the program, the players, and so on. If this were a sort of coy play to build hype, then it wouldn't really fit the way this guy generally tweets.

News to me, but I generally pull myself away from sports during these months. It seems whichever single report spoke about a graduate program he wants, was massively overshadowed by the dozen of other reports about him going to a good program, with a chance to contend, and showcase his talent..

I'm not sure why someone from VaTech would leave to go to Kentucky or Florida, for educational purposes.

It’s not a violation because he’s still a part of their team on scholarship there until he commits elsewhere.

I'm not so sure. He graduated, and is not enrolled in graduate courses. He entered the transfer portal, which makes him not on the Va Tech roster, and subject to certain recruiting rules. That is why he gets to take 5 official visits, and would have to announce a return to Va Tech, just like he would announce enrolling at UT or UK. If that were not the case, he wouldn't have to announce anything, just enroll in classes. .

I do remember reading somewhere that his graduate degree is important.

That’s like saying coaches aren’t allowed to talk about their players who are testing the draft waters. Most of those guys aren’t enrolled in classes at the time because school ends late April and doesn’t start back until late May. He’s still a part of their team until all of the paperwork is completed. Portal doesn’t mean he’s gone.

Sounds like he is staying put and they are building hype for the season. Still seems crazy for him to make such a show of leaving only to stay. What did he gain besides a few campus tours? The exposure will fade by end of week if he stays. This whole thing is wacky.
He did a tour and decided it was best to stay put. Many people go house shopping only to say "nah, I'm just going to stay in the house I've put so much into...but glad I went shopping just to explore the options".

Here I posted this last week no one paid attention. The coach talks openly about his recruitment and was planning a visit after UK visit. Partly why I created he ship has sailed thread.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.ro...adbea189-0e12-561b-a165-497f27c8e86c.amp.html

Yeah it’s no different than a coach talking about his player who is testing the draft waters. Neither may be taking classes, but they are both still officially a part of their team until they are officially gone. Most colleges have 2-3 summer “terms” anyways that vary in length.

Just being honest.....he should finish at the school where he started. JMHO I do not like this ship jumping after 4-yrs in most cases. If VT does not have his degree...then why did he start there in the first place? Coaching changes maybe. Obviously you can change majors but I just don't like "disloyalty."

Always cracks me up when fans keep telling us how a recruit is not coming, ship has sailed, whatever form it takes, as if they know more than Cal. They really think Cal has nothing better to do with his time than chase somebody who is clearly not coming according to some fans.

Idk what that degree is in and I don't know how it compares between the colleges.. but pound for pound, Vatech is best education of the schools I've seen listed. I find it hard to believe another school has a better graduate program..

Either way, it's like the quote from training day "you tryna go to jail or you tryna go home". You trying to maybe be a marine biologist or play 5 years in the nba and make millions?

If he spent 2 1/2 months in the transfer portal and took 4 or 5 visits and returns to his original school, it would be bizarre. Probably like RJ Hampton. UK bound if Hagans left and KB would have been UK bound if one of Nick/EJ left.

He graduated. He’ll always be a Hokie and have love for the school no doubt. Blacksburg is an awesome college town. But that is the exact opposite of how we treat guys who have left, even before graduating. Our staff and fans have still shown a ton of support for the Wiltjer and Matthews of the world and encouraged them to do whatthey thought best for theirselves and their families.

Blacksburg an awesome college town? Eeesh. Not sure I agree with that. My sister went to Tech and I spent a ton of time there in the 90s. They would have had to make a bunch of improvements to make it an awesome college town, IMO. The area is beautiful. The mountains are majestic and there are tons of hiking trails and the like in that area. But in the winter, Blacksburg is as cold as Russia. Brutally cold and windy. And in the 90s, there was squat to do in regards to nightlife. If you weren’t at a frat party, then hanging at Applebee’s was about all you had.

I go about twice a year now bc some of my closest friends are tech grads and I’m a few hours away. It’s still a very rural school but they have a nice little downtown area with a handful of fun bars and good restaurants and the Greek life isn’t really a overwhelming presence now. I enjoy it, but I’m not a big city person tn start w and am content w the same 5 bars and having the river/mountains.

As for the cold, Lexington gets pretty frigid and windy as well. When I was a freshman at UK we had that huge ice storm that laid down a solid foot of ice all over campus. Blacksburg is actually at a more southern latitude but they are very similar.

As far as “what can you do for me and my basketball career”, it isn’t anywhere close. If he makes a business decision and not a peer pressure and comfort based decision, then he’ll be at UK.

This isn't high school recruiting. Hes a student athlete at that school until he says something different. No violations here.

"You put your right foot in
You put your right foot out
You do the Hokie-Pokie
And you don't make the draft again
That's what V-Tech is all about."

They actually do the Hokie Pokie dance during some of their timeouts during basketball games. It's kinda funny.

Not sure what his grad degree is but undergrad major appeared to be Public Relations per Va Tech site.

Unless he plans on getting a MA in Communication/PR, I'd have to assume an MBA is the most likely choice.

Florida and UT are the only two ranked higher than Gatton. Shot in the dark...but who knows?

None of these schools are bad schools at all, but Va Tech followed by Florida are probably the best of the bunch.

I thought I read or heard whatever his degree focus, it wasn't available at all schools?

He doesn't owe them squat UNLESS they've been paying for his services with some sort of extra benefits... Loyalty? Yeah, unless he learns what Cal and UK can teach him he is giving V Tech about 40 years of loyalty...he will be toiling away...

Showing out/exposure. The ability to play 25+ games on prime time instead of 10 and the additional media attention from the tournament. VaTech is going to struggle next year.

Play Duke twice, Virginia twice, UNC, UofL, and one of those teams in the ACCT. I think you're looking at 7 losses right there. Then you have the Maui Invitational which they will lose in. Not to mention Cuse, ND and NCState should all be better (4 more games). You're talking a very real possibility of 12 losses and that's not including upsets, unannounced OOC games.. to me, that says no NCAAT for VaTech next year.

Absolutely. And I think the exposure helps with that, along with coaching, better competition in practice, etc. I see no reason he can't get, at least, a 2/3-year NBA deal worth $1mil. He just needs to go in the top45. And if he averages VaTech numbers for Kentucky and we go deep, someone will take him.

I hope it works out for him. It looks like KB may have missed the UK boat...It seems to have sailed without him from Cal's tweeted video and practice response...

And they put a picture up of "loyalty"

Scummy

"Loyalty".....when you have a new Head Coach who left players behind at Wofford......so the definition only applies to the players. Got it.

Say this to fire a shot at the ridiculous ploy. I actually think the way Mike Young coaches is a good fit for Blackshear's game and he can stay/go wherever he chooses. Feel that way about all players, but gimmicks and lame stuff like this is just sad, but that's my take as an adult. If someone doesn't want in, they should leave. If they do, you sell them on what you'll do for their game, not because they've been there for their career. It's why we have so many transfers in first place in CBB....guys pick schools for wrong reasons.

You guys need to move on without Blackshear. I have a feeling him coming here is off the table altogether on both ends. Cal wanted him here to start summer workouts with the team and that ship has sailed. He may not be welcome anymore.

On top of that, if you think about it logically, he NEEDS to he the man to improve draft stock. We have 3 or 4 guys that can easily blow up this season and dominate the headlines. KB can't afford to be just another guy on the team.

You must not have ever visited Blacksburg. It’s in the middle of BFE and the closest city is Roanoke which is about 45 minutes away. Christiansburg in the same county (Montgomery) is a nice town.

Maybe the rule has changed. But I thought athletes were eligible for the grad transfer only if their institution did not offer the graduate program they wanted enroll in. If so, would be weird to return to VT. Unless he changed his choice of grad programs.
